Someone is importing old Japanese Kei cars to the US, including one that was an unobtainium dream car for me back in the Nineties: The Mitsubishi Minica Dangan ZZ.In addition to having an extremely metal-sounding name, the Dangan ZZ had a turbocharged and intercooled engine sporting five valves per cylinder. Granted, said engine was a hopelessly twee little three cylinder boasting pistons the size of teacups, but still...The Nineties were to the Japanese automotive scene what the Sixties were to...

2020 Toyota Supra: The Best Toyota Sports Car?

The 2020 Toyota Supra is the first Supra in the United States in 21 years.  Toyota GAZOO Racing applied their vision when engineering the new Supra.  Expect the Supra in July with a fairly reasonable MSRP considering the performance.  Much has been said about the fifth-gen, 2020 Toyota Supra. We all know how the Supra is a rehashed version of the new BMW Z4, but that’s not exactly right. And while we’re still left pondering on the fine line between Toyota and BMW sports cars, I think it’s time...

These Talented Artists Virtually Tune Up Cars in Adobe Photoshop

Virtual tuning is the artistic genre where car-loving graphic artists digitally transform vehicles into unique modified cars, using the kinds of aftermarket wheels, bodykits and spoilers available in real life, but with a hyper-stylised appearance. Source photos of race car inspired elements are super-imposed using Photoshop, which are complemented with digitally painted elements and visual effects to produce impressive automotive concept images. While most examples are based on existing style t...

MOTO PHOTOS: 2018 Art Of Speed Show, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Rusty Factory’s Beautiful ‘White Angel’ BMW R75 Written by Marlon Slack For much of my time in Malaysia I looked like a German sex tourist. My bags had been lost in El Salvador on the trip over, so, smelling quite ripe after 36 hours in the air, I’d bought the first shirt I’d seen. It was pink and floral and not really the kind of thing you want to wear to a show like the Art of Speed. Or at all, really. But I was stuck with it. And it was worth looking like an absolute cretin to see the amaz...

Take 5 with Hoonigan’s Jon Chase and the Tri 5 by Fire

Jon Chase is the artistic captain of Hoonigan. Some of your favorite hats, or shirts were mostly likely designed by him. He is also quite the Chevy aficionado, with a small fleet of Bowtie clad rides in his garage. By fa,r his most famous car is his 1955 Chevy Bel Air more commonly known as the Tri Five by Fire. We had a chance to sit down with Jon and get more of an insight into his life at Hoonigan, his outlook on car culture, and an update on his ’55. Why the 1955 Chevy? The whole deal wit...

Stick It: Bumper stickers, the tackiest trend

Photo by Tooele Gun Club. I always believed that the ultimate expression of yourself on the roads of our great nation was embodied by the kind of car/truck/vehicle you drove. Building up a Mercury Montego with an overdrive trans, four-wheel disc brakes and a carbon-fiber front-bumper means that I wished to be individual at any cost. (My ’64 Dodge Dart convertible–sunny, fun, inviting opinion from all observers–is a bit of a ruse in this regard, and as a crusty, recalcitrant navel-gazer I decid...

Sawmill gravy and sushi – why Nissan’s Skyline R32 GTR NISMO is more like a Plymouth Superbird 440 Six-Pack than a Buick GNX

1990 Nissan Skyline GT-R NISMO. Photos by author. The details – power, production numbers, you name it – make the Nissan Skyline GTR NISMO very much a match for the Buick GNX (see the September ’17 issue of Hemmings Motor News, ON SALE NOW for a deep dive comparing GTR and GNX). But the differing philosophies behind the Buick and the Nissan means that, despite ending up with similar specifications, they literally and figuratively have come from very different places. We would suggest that a mo...

Woodward Dream Cruise: GM Designers Show Off

The beauty of the Woodward Dream Cruise is that it’s an excuse to embrace car culture for the full week leading up to it. And if you work for an automaker, it can be a ticket to bring your favorite project car to work and a hall pass to leave the office for the day. The cruise might technically not be until Saturday, Aug. 19, but General Motors on Tuesday celebrated the 8th annual Design on Woodward. It is an employee enthusiasm event for the design organization. Almost 100 cars were registered ...
