‘You Don’t Nomi’: Film Review

When “Showgirls” opened in the fall of 1995, it was mocked and damned with more derision than the usual movie debacle (“John Carter,” “Gigli”). That’s because, according to the conventional view, it was not just a bad movie but an unspeakably vulgar bad movie. Directed by the talented Euro sensationalist Paul Verhoeven, from a script […]

Notorious flop ‘Showgirls’ gets a fresh look in documentary ‘You Don’t Nomi’

In the summer of 2015, Jeffrey McHale was sitting with friends on the grass at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery for a 20th anniversary screening of the notoriously over-the-top 1995 flop “Showgirls.” McHale, a television editor, didn’t see the film when it was first released. “Showgirls” premiered when he was a middle schooler, a time when he was familiar with star Elizabeth Berkley only from the show “Saved By The Bell.” In “Showgirls,” which is essentially “All About Eve’ with skimpier costumes,...

It's time for James Bond to jump to streaming TV

The producers who oversee the creative direction of the James Bond franchise, Barbara Broccoli and  Michael Wilson, told Variety in a new interview that they weren't ruling out streaming in the future. The franchise is a major force at the box office, but after nearly six decades on the big screen, there's also plenty of potential for it on the small screen, especially in the age of streaming TV. Apple and Amazon were once in the running to scoop up the Bond rights, a sign that it's not just t...

Watch Klaus Nomi Debut His New Wave Vaudeville Show: The Birth of the Opera-Singing Space Alien (1978)

Given the history New York’s East Village as the first foreign language neighborhood in the country—after waves of European immigrants arrived—perhaps it’s only natural that Klaus Nomi, opera-singing German performance artist who made a name for himself in the punk clubs of the late 70s, would find a home there. By his time, the tenements had given way to other demographic waves: including Beatniks, writers, actors, Warholian Factory superstars, and punk and New Wave scenesters, whom Dan...

Sake etiquette and traditions

If you’ve only ever tried sake at cheap sushi restaurants, you’d be forgiven for thinking that all sake is meant to be served hot and taken as a shot. But if you want to be taken seriously on your next trip to Japan, or even your local Japanese restaurant, you need to understand that sake is just as complex as any whiskey or wine. And more importantly, that the etiquette of drinking it in no way involves yelling “sake bomb!” and banging on the table until a shot of sake falls off of chopstick...

What is the Japanese blood type theory of personality?

In Japan and South Korea, there is a common belief that blood types determine character much in the same way Western countries believe in the zodiac. While there's little scientific evidence to back up the claim, the blood type theory of personality remains wildly popular. However, how this theory came to be has its roots in a dark history. None If you were to ask a stranger at a bar what their blood type was, the best-case scenario in most of the world would be that you'd receive some very strang...

Nio, originally launched as NextEV in 2014, announced that it had delivered 3,268 electric SUVs in the third quarter of 2018. Not only does this beg the question of when Nio swapped from Formula E and electrified hypercars to utility vehicles, but it also makes us wonder how a burgeoning EV firm managed to surpass production goals. Sense360 raises $7 million to track customers in fast food restaurants

Physical tracking in shops has been a global trend since at least 2013. Using a cell phone’s location data and video monitoring retailers have been tracking customers’ movements through stores in an effort to regain some of the ground lost to the online retail experience.
