Get excited about the North Greeley bikeway project as it nears completion

Looking north on North Greeley from the Adidas pedestrian bridge.(Photos: Jonathan Maus/BikePortland) There’s been significant progress on the North Greeley Avenue bikeway project since the last time we checked in. Much of the bikeway between Willamette and Going is completed. All that remains is to turn on the new bike traffic signals, finish important crossing treatments, and a few other details. I rolled over last weekend for a closer look and I’m convinced: When complete, this bikeway w...

The North Greeley separated bike path is finally open!

(Photos: Jonathan Maus/BikePortland) It has been a long time coming but I am happy to say that the North Greeley Avenue bike path is open. I shared a sneak peek a few weeks ago so I won’t bore you with details again, but since that post the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) has finished the striping and, more importantly, the bike signal at the north end. But first, a few more photos of the path in all its glory (last time I was there the striping wasn’t done): Now, about that s...

Careless driving, other charges possible in serious injury collision on N Greeley at I-5

A woman checks over her shoulder before merging across the on-ramp where Greeley funnels into I-5.(Photos: J. Maus/BikePortland) A person riding a bike on North Greeley was struck by a person driving a car today around 1:45 pm. The collision happened — surprise, surprise! — where the unprotected bike lane crosses over a busy, high-speed freeway onramp to I-5 where people often drive well over 50 mph. It’s a collision that should have never happened. A Portland Bureau of Transportation pro...

Ghost walker appears where man was hit crossing North Greeley

A marking on southbound North Greeley at Bryant to commemorate the death of Stanley Grochowski.(Photo: J. Maus/BikePortland) People who live in the neighborhood where Stanley Grochowski was hit (and later died) on August 30th have placed a white marking on the pavement in the shape of a human. Similar to a ghost bike, this is a ghost walker. Someone (we haven’t confirmed who exactly) has also posted what they say is Grochowski’s artwork on a nearby telephone pole — after it was found scatter...

Victim of collision at notorious Greeley/I-5 intersection comes forward

The bike lane and the freeway on-ramp on North Greeley where a man was hit on January 27th.(Photo: Google Streetview) A recent collision on North Greeley where it crosses over an on-ramp for the Interstate 5 freeway has thrust concerns about that dangerous intersection back into the spotlight. It’s also a reminder that even when collisions don’t lead to serious injuries or even death they still take a significant toll on victims and the road designs that lead to them still deserve our attentio...
