NBA renames All-Star Game MVP award for Kobe Bryant

The NBA has renamed its All-Star Game MVP award in honor of Kobe Bryant. Commissioner Adam Silver announced the move on Saturday. Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna were among nine people killed when their helicopter crashed into the side of a mountain near Los Angeles on Jan. 26. Bryant became the youngest player to ever play in an All-Star Game when he made his debut in 1998 at age 19. He made the All-Star team 18 times during his stellar career with the Los Angeles Lakers, winning the...

Kobe Bryant a finalist for Hall of Fame, which feels depth of his loss

Heisler: Kobe Bryant and David Stern, twinkling in the All-Star heavens

Kobe and David, partners forever … Most All-Star Games are only, or barely, that. This one is different, with the NBA honoring David Stern, its former commissioner who had stepped down in 2014 and passed away Jan. 1 at 77, and Kobe Bryant, who died 25 days later at 41. Bryant and Stern were longtime partners … the showman and the show … as this event showed. Stern’s wizardry turned his All-Star Game into the three-day pageant that all leagues now feature, as surely as he guided the NBA through r...

Lakers show determination to stay ahead in the West

DENVER >> The No. 1 seed? LeBron James claims the Western-leading Lakers never talk about it. At least James did not talk about it before Wednesday night’s game against the No. 2 Nuggets, a team that was three games behind the standings. His teammates gathered context clues, like when he dressed in his jersey 80 minutes before tip-off. There were no jokes or smiles, they said. There was no warmth. Alex Caruso, who had not played substantial minutes the game before, said it cast a tone for the wh...
