How a Nintendo 64 Pokémon Game Helped Set the Stage for ‘Detective Pikachu’

Those maniacs went ahead and did it. They finally made a life-action Pokémon movie that brings the world of Pikachu, Bulbasaur and even the nightmare-inducing Mr. Mime to life. It’s been 21 years since both the first games, Pokémon Red and Blue, and the anime premiered in the US in September 1998. Since then we’ve got more than a thousand episodes of an anime series, 21 animated movies and over 30 video games, but all of those mostly showed the Pokémon as collectable trophies or the combat...

Swedish architectural practice Wingårdh Arkitektkontor converted a large old farm in the south of Sweden into a holiday home with a cozy woodland cabin atmosphere. Commissioned by a family who reside in the nearby city of Malmö, the countryside retreat was fashioned as a luxurious escape into nature built predominately with timber and designed to embrace views of the lush forest through floor-to-ceiling glazing. The adaptive reuse project—dubbed Kvarnhuset (The Mill House)—has respected the far...

Sculptural wood cabin is an alpine retreat with magnificent views

Perched high on weather-beaten mountain is the Hooded Cabin, a sculptural wood cabin with a rugged exterior and a sleek interior. A $350 toilet powered by worms may be the ingenious future of sanitation that Bill Gates has been dreaming about

Worm toilets require no traditional flushing and aren't hooked up to a sewer system — instead, worms compost human waste. More than 4,000 such "Tiger Toilets" have been installed to date across India, in homes of people who were previously defecating in the open. The worm toilets smell a lot better than a pit latrine, and don't breed mosquitoes either. Here's how a $350 toilet powered by worms could change the world and save lives.  Worms may not have spines, but they're doing some back-break...

An old bungalow is transformed into an award-winning home with a modern extension

Los Angeles-based Edward Ogosta Architecture has breathed new life into a 70-year-old bungalow by adding a modern extension fitted with massive windows. Named the Rear Window House, the Culver City home spans 1,450 square feet and was commissioned by clients who sought extra space for their growing family. The new addition respects the local architecture — predominately low-slung bungalows from the post-war era — and maintains the 3:12 roof slope shared by the existing house and surrounding res...

Special Feature: A Look at Commercial Hardwood Flooring

For sheer wow factor, nothing beats a broad expanse of glimmering natural wood. This isn’t to say hardwoods aren’t dynamic. Danish brand Junckers, for instance, offers a huge variety of hardwoods—any number of whic...
