Patrick Stewart Is Reading Every Shakespeare Sonnet on Instagram: One a Day “to Keep the Doctor Away”

View this post on Instagram   It has led me to undertake what follows. When I was a child in the 1940s, my mother would cut up slices of fruit for me (there wasn't much) and as she put it in front of me she would say: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." How about, “A sonnet a day keeps the doctor away”? we go: Sonnet 1. A post shared by Patrick Stewart (@sirpatstew) on Mar 22, 2020 at 4:28pm PDT After receiving...

It took four years of work and Tailor Made By V. Tailor Made By V. Huttley - The Lucky 7 Oberon Fly Reels - Part 6

It's hard for me to believe that four years ago Vince Huttley of Tailor Made by V. Huttley began the "Lucky 7 Oberon Fly Reels" in his shop in Australia.  Life for Vince had changed a lot over the years and his time has been pulled a lot of different directions with work, marriage, a child and everything else that life brings.  Thankfully, he never gave up on this limited edition series and with this post, this build series ends. You can revisit the previous "Lucky 7" posts by clicking on these...

‘Jumanji: Reverse the Curse’ VR Attraction Will Let You Enter The Jungle

No one seems to have a good time in the Jumanji movies — they tend to be accidentally sucked into the mystical game and have to fight to escape. But the upcoming Jumanji: Reverse the Curse VR attraction allows you to actually play the game as it is meant to be enjoyed, without dealing with all those above dangers or the untold body horror of being stuck in another person. Sony Pictures Virtual Reality is teaming up with virtual reality company The VOID to present Jumanji: Reverse the Curse, ...

[ Warning : Bloviation Alert. The second half of this is what I meant to write on Wednesday for "Open Mike" this week. Marcin's right, I do go on too long when I get my teeth into a topic.  —Ed.] - A few further thoughts about the concept of an "apex product": It's not an average. Nor is it mediocre. It's an ideal. ...But a practical, utilitarian sort of ideal. One that takes into account more than just the normal hierarchy of status and expense. For example, with highly salable top-of-the-mar...

CEC grants wishes to some for biofuels projects

Wishes are coming true for some California bioenergy projects. Aemetis, Oberon Fuels and others will receive millions from the California Energy Commission for their bioenergy projects, from DME to advanced ethanol. As Walt Disney once said, “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.” One thing he forgot to add though, was funding…money…without that, it’s hard to get bioenergy dreams to come true, isn’t it? The background Back in August 2018, the California Energy Co...

Where To Start With Science Fiction & Fantasy Board Games

“Where to Start With” is our ongoing series of essays detailing where one can start with any number of SFF/popgeekery topics, from where to begin with the morass of X-Men comics to diving into the expanded Star Wars canon. Today, we’re thrilled to present guest writer Sara Kadhim’s point of view, on where to start with SFF board games. Board games are currently in their golden age. While most people have played Monopoly or Clue, over the past ten years, modern board games have become a blossomi...

Enjoy the Silence: A KTM electric bike built for Schuberth

Electric motorcycles are gathering momentum, whether we like it or not. And customizers are slowly starting to discover the potential of e-bikes—which makes our job here way more interesting. But there’s one shop we’d never have pegged as early adopters: Urban Motor of Berlin. Peter Dannenberg and his crew have made a name for themselves building classy petrol-driven machines, using old school techniques. So this battery-operated whippet based on the KTM Freeride E is a literal volte-face. ...

Shakespeare’s ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ in Griffith Park is a joyful evening out

First, a confession. I am a Shakespeare nut. The first Shakespeare play I fell in love with as a child was “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The play has everything: comedy, magic, romance, a slice of the ridiculous, and a Shakespearean poetic dialogue which is more than usually easy to follow. Indeed, it’s a fun, lighthearted play to watch and, not to mention a hard play to kill, and thus perfect for a summer evening. Enter the Independent Shakespeare Company, and their Griffith Park Free Shakespear...

Accessories Finally Quality Leather Oasis 2 case

Like, most people I was disappointed in Amazon’s original offerings of Leather cases. In my case the big issue was the weak magnets. In the past there have been some nice quality leather covers for older Kindle’s from manufacturers like Oberon. I purchased the Kindle Oasis 2 case off Etsy from Hand and Hide in Dark Chocolate. The bad news is the price, $129! The good news is this is quality leather with the smell and texture you expect from good product. This is the kind of leather that gain...

The Blue Mountains's Best Kept Secret: Mayfield Garden

Mayfield Garden is the culmination of a vision of one family's dream. Formerly a sheep farm, it has been transformed into a garden, cafe, kiosk, workshop space, produce store, nursery and event space. Located in Oberon, 3 hours from Sydney it is a 160 acre cool climate garden (said to be the largest in the Southern hemisphere) that is open all year round. The food is no afterthought though and the kitchen led by chef Dan Child works three months ahead to ensure that the produce grown is reflecte...

Mossy rose galls

I talked about oak apples at the end of the May, on Oak Apple Day by no coincidence, as it happens. But there are other kinds of galls. Here’s a mossy rose gall growing on a dog rose (Rosa canina) on the edge of local woodland. As with oak apples, these growths (a mossy rose gall, rose bedeguar gall, Robin’s pincushion gall, or moss gall) are the result of a type of wasp, in this case the tiny Diplolepis rosae, laying its eggs (approximately 60 of them) in an unopened leaf axillary or terminal ...

A Midsummer Night’s Dream - Fun and Frolic, But Too Little Heart

Reviewed by Judd Hollander The Public Theater pulls out all the stops with its eye-catching presentation of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Nights Dream at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park . One of the most beloved and original works in the Shakespearian canon, and last presented at the Delacorte a decade ago, the show features star-crossed lovers, spurned suitors who don’t take “no” for an answer, a host of magical beings, and a group of strolling would-be thespians.
