I'm back from my stoical walk — 3.4 miles, 60°, down by the lake and over to State Street...

... graffiti on a boarded up window says "Marxists are tying to make State Street a boarded-up unsafe dystopia."    Sunshine Daydream says "Spread love not hate." *** ... walking in the tall trees/going where the wind goes/blooming like a red rose... [Author: [email protected] (Ann Althouse)]

"Don’t set your mind on things you don’t possess as if they were yours, but count the blessings you actually possess and think how much you would desire them..."

"... if they weren’t already yours. But watch yourself, that you don’t value these things to the point of being troubled if you should lose them."  Wrote Marcus Aurelius, quoted in "The Daily Stoic," an audiobook accompanying me as I take a walk — away from all TV sets and computers.  We're having a frabjous Indian Summer right now here in Wisconsin, USA. This morning at 5:54, a man erected a large cross on the empty plinth where the "Forward!" statue had stood until protesters tore it down last week.

We happened to be driving by: The shirt says "We want more" (front) and "SOULutions" (BACK). I'd gotten out of the car to take the second picture, and as I was getting back, a black man walked up to me and began, "I'm from Minnesota...." I said "Sorry" and got in the car. The man went up to the guy who was putting up the cross (and the woman who was there with him).I couldn't hear the conversation, but the man with the cross listened, handed the man what I assume was money, continued to talk ...

I'm going to do something today that I've never done before.

What I wanted to learn.

I wanted to take the "Master Class" from David Sedaris, but I couldn't bring myself to pay $99 for a subscription to the app until I saw that they also had a class from Billy Collins, a poet I've liked ever since I randomly picked a book off a high shelf at Paul's Books and read one poem. Both Sedaris and Collins, I see now, begin their writing by noticing some little thing that is present in their own life. Both teach that you ought to carry a notebook with you everywhere and jot down these litt...

"So... I don't get what's 'problematic' with Madonna's putting her son's incredible dance on Insta? Thanks, in any case, it was great to see it."

That's the first comment I read on the New York Magazine article, "What Do We Want From White Celebrities Right Now?" Here's the section that labels Madonna "problematic":[S]ome celebs have shown up to protest. Others have “opened up their purses” and lent their voices to decry racism and support detailed and specific calls for reform. But just like the rest of us, they have some problematic colleagues: Madonna celebrating her son’s interpretive solidarity dance; Ashton Kutcher posting an incong...

"Isn't it beautiful?" — a middle-aged white woman enthused gently...

... as I was photographing this... ... in downtown Madison. Maybe she was just trying to say the right thing, but maybe she was delusional or had very low standards. I aim to help — and I have to admit that she wasn't the slightest bit intimidating to me — so I said, "Actually, I don't think this one is very good." In my endless search for positivity, I added that there were a lot of other murals and many of them were good. And then, because I'm always looking for a point of agreement, I said, ...

"Wow. 12 days ago I began a silent meditation in the desert. We were totally isolated. No phone, no communication etc. We had no idea..."

"... what was happening outside the facility. Walked out yesterday into a very different world. One that's been changed forever. Mind blowing — to say the least. I'm getting messages from friends and family all around the globe and catching up on what's going on. Hope you and yours are ok. Sending positive energy to all. Stay inside. Stay safe."Writes the actor Jared Leto on Instagram.Maybe your life already involved so much isolation that the new requirements of social distancing only mean that...

"I don't have any bad habits, actually" — I said a month ago.

I'm not sure why the subject came up, but someone asked me in the comments if I ever smoked, and I said, "No. I don't have any bad habits, actually."Does that seem like an arrogant, conceited statement? Someone remembered and brought it up today, deep in the comments to "Does it smell funny in here?," the post about the accusation against Brett Kavanaugh, where I provoked some people by saying — point #4 on a 5-point list — "Why should we Americans accept this man's power over us? He's been port...

I'm doing 3 things in Chicago "and nearly everyone will be disgusted by at least one of them."

So I said a couple days ago. I've already revealed that I am staying at the Trump Hotel, but many of you are not disgusted by that. For those of you, I add my second reveal. Here's what I did last night: [Author: [email protected] (Ann Althouse)]

I happened on the Kennedy retirement story as I was flipping channels on the car radio.

I was so sure there would be no retirement announcement today. I think the Justices cling to the bench until Death calls for a vacancy. But no. Kennedy retires, and he retires in time for Trump to nominate someone who can be confirmed before the next election works its will on the Senate.I was away from the blog — driving 100+ miles — but that did give me the opportunity to listen to the cable news channels (via satellite radio) far more than I'd ever put up with them if I were home and in a pos...

I was distracted by the gigantic feet of all the actors... especially the actress in bare feet... so weird.

But that was my fault for not buying my ticket in advance, like everybody else in that theater last night. I arrived rather early. In fact, I was the first person to take a seat in the theater. But I got the last seat sold, and it was in the front row, at the base of a huge screen. The show was the captured-live theater performance of "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time," which played here in Madison last night. Only one showing, so no option of coming back another time. Either s...

I got hit by a drone the other day.

I was walking in my very quiet neighborhood, wearing a long wool coat, listening to an audiobook in my usual there-but-also-somewhere-else manner, and suddenly I'm hit in the leg with what I thought was a rock. Is someone throwing a rock at me? I turn and see a rather pathetic man holding a controller of some sort in his two hands and glance down at the ground and see the stupid drone toy of his that hit me. I give him a look that must have expressed my opinion that this is the dumbest loser I h...
