Olympus Is the Tele King

This might be the real reason for the Olympus M1X: to go with the upcoming supertele, Olympus's answer to the Panaleica 100–400mm*. I believe Jim Richardson of Kansas is the only National Geographic photographer who is a regular longtime reader of TOP. Jim had this to say the other day during the M1X discussion: "To me the big news here is this body in combination with the new 150–400mm ƒ/4.5 lens with the built-in 1.25X teleconverter. Taken together this is the reach of a full frame equivalent ...

MFT here to stay?

I don't necessarily disagree with his points, even though between October when he recorded this, and today, Olympus announced the OM-D E-M1X. The M1X is the first pro-grade MFT body to ape the CaNikon 1D/Dx style. with a built-in vertical grip & dual batteries, and has feature sets that tilt it heavily toward sports/action photographers and nature photogs. Canon is King of DSLR and Mirrorless Sales in Japan for 2018

Canon reigns supreme in both DSLR and mirrorless camera sales in Japan for 2018. And the results are somewhat staggering to behold. Image via Avinash Singh from Pexels.com. In DSLRs, Canon enjoys a 57.4% market share in Japan according to PetaPixel. The King is then followed by Nikon and Ricoh which hold 39.3% and 3.1% of the DSLR market. For those of us that are not mathematically inclined, this means that a little more than every 2 out of 4 DSLR cameras sold in Japan come from Canon. As Peta...

Failure Mode

Way back when I was still working at the 1-hour photo lab, call it 1989 or 90, we carried a few of the usual cheap blister-pack point & shoot cameras, as well as some more expensive Kodaks and a few Olympus cameras. The most expensive thing in our department was the Olympus IS-1. It was a single-lens reflex camera, but the 35-135mm power zoom lens was built-in and non-interchangeable. Olympus called it a "zoom lens reflex" and it was yet another attempt by a camera maker to solve the saturated ma...

The Best Film Camera of All Time is…

The best film camera of all time is the Olympus OM-1.   That’s all folks, end of the article. Ok, bias is a thing…my favourite is the Olympus OM-1 Photo by Martin Taylor Ok Just Kidding…Sort Of… Alright, alright, I do realise that just because a camera is my favourite camera, it isn’t necessarily the best.   This is probably the most subjective thing to try writing about, but I’m going to try to address it without starting World War 3 (or maybe I will…it is the internet!). Sunday Support Group: OC/OL/OY (and Mike's Camera Decision)

From time to time I suggest little exercises—well, okay, sometimes some big ones too—for people to consider. I love learning, and learners naturally teach. One of those exercises was called OC/OL/OY—one camera, one lens, one year. Here's a description of it on PetaPixel*. So...it's January...time for resolutions...which I am notoriously bad at keeping...and I'm thinking...well, that maybe I should take my own advice and do a OC/OL/OY. I've actually done a OC/OL/OY before, several times. Mainly b...
