New $19,000 Employee Retention Credit for Small Business Owners

With the year-end stimulus bill that was recently passed, a change was made to allow companies that claimed PPP loans to now also claim the Employee Retention Credit (ERC) with wages that were not utilized as qualified expenses in the forgiveness of the PPP loan. For 2020 & 2021, the combined credit could be up to $19,000 per employee, that is $5,000 for 2020 and $7,000 for each of the 1st and 2nd quarter of 2021.  For example, 10 employees X $19,000, could be worth $190,000. The best way to qua...

Gift Guide: TechCrunch’s Favorite Things of 2020

It goes without saying, but 2020 was a bad year for a lot of people. For many, it was a year of stress, of sadness, and anxiety. It was a year of missing friends and family; of just getting to the next day, even as each day seemed to blur into the last. As we’ve done at the end of each of the past few years, we invited our team to look back and highlight some of their “favorite things” — the things that, as we look back from the depths of December, put smiles on our faces, or helped us pass the ...

This $99 gadget helps you make music, no skill required

At CES back in January, I met with a handful of founders who were/are crowdfunding musical instruments. It’s a fascinating category and one to watch if you have a passing interest in either music or technology. Like a vast majority of hardware startups, most companies in the space will build one product if they’re lucky — and even that can feel like something of a long shot. Coupling the Hail Mary pursuits of hardware development with an earnest attempt to reinvent the musical wheel feels like a...

Crowdfunded hardware startups are breathing fresh life into music making

I love music. Seriously, it’s one of the few things that brings solace in this cold, lonely world. Want to go deep on Joni Mitchell, William Onyeabor or Pablo Casals? I’m game. Yes, I worked at multiple record stores years before TechCrunch. Yes, I will always be that guy. What I will never be, however, is a musician, professional or otherwise. I’m resolved to this fact at this point in my life. I’ll never be a rock star like I’ll never be a professional baseball player — both facts I’ve mos...

The Sociologist and Space Engineers Behind Orba, Artiphon's New Instrument for Everyone

Mike Butera is in an L.A. charter school classroom, showing teenage music students a small, spherical synth he's has been working on quietly for the last two years. Until now, Butera has wanted to fly under the radar with this new product. Fans of his Artiphon Instrument 1—Time magazine and T-Pain among them—are zealous. And this latest release packs even more complicated tech—including spacecraft-inspired hardware—into what's set to be a more streamlined, simplified product. Butera wanted to be...

Artiphon launches a Kickstarter campaign for its new musical device Orba

Artiphon, the startup that previously raised more than $1 million on Kickstarter for a device called the Instrument 1, has launched a new campaign for its latest invention, Orba. Co-founder and CEO Mike Butera said the Instrument 1 and Orba share “the same DNA,” namely his vision to help music-making become more accessible to everyone, regardless of training or experience. “I want beginners to feel like pros, but also for pros to feel like beginners again,” Butera told me. “For me, this is just ...
