Facebook Criticized For 'Arbitrary' Suspension of Trump -- by Its Own Oversight Board

"But that is what it's done..." They call the board's decision "kind of perfect, actually, since it forces everyone's hand — from the Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg to our limp legislators in Congress..." The editor of the conservative National Review adds: If Facebook had set out to demonstrate that it has ...

Trump is banned for now, but Facebook still needs to change its policies

The decision from the Facebook Oversight Board to uphold the suspension on former President Donald Trump's account marks a short-term step to limit the spread of dangerous online disinformation. But it's far from a reason to celebrate the social media giant as a beacon of responsibility. After all, the Oversight Board kicked the more consequential decision about whether the ban should be permanent right back to Facebook's leadership.

6 things you should know about the Facebook Oversight Board

Facebook’s quasi-independent Oversight Board on May 5, 2021, upheld the company’s suspension of former President Donald Trump from the platform and Instagram. The decision came four months after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg banned Trump “indefinitely” for his role in inciting the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. The board chastised Facebook for failing to either set an end date for the suspension or permanently ban Trump and gave the social media company six months to resolve the matter. What is...

Trump Shows Why He Doesn't Need Twitter Or Facebook, As He Launches His Own Twitter-Like Microblog (techdirt)

In a few hours, the Oversight Board will announce its decision regarding Facebook's decision to ban Donald Trump from its platform. As we noted back when Trump was removed from Twitter and Facebook, Trump does not lack in ways to be heard. Indeed, we suggested that he could very, very easily set up his own website with tweet-like statements, and it was likely that those would be shared widely. And... as we wait for the Oversight Board ruling, it looks like Trump has done exactly that. He's lau...

Comments on the Oversight Board’s Decision Regarding Trump’s Facebook Account

Today, the Oversight Board issued its decision regarding Facebook’s decision to suspend Trump’s account for two posts Trump made during the January 6 insurrection. The decision covers a lot of ground (it’s nearly 12k words), and I’ll only cover part of it. The decision has three main points: Trump violated Facebook’s rules. Facebook was justified to suspend Trump’s account, but it was not justified to suspend it for an indefinite period. Facebook should publicly clarify several policies. The ...

Facebook’s content decision review body, a quasi-external panel that’s been likened to a ‘Supreme Court of Facebook’ but isn’t staffed by sitting judges, can’t be truly independent of the tech giant which funds it, has no legal legitimacy or democratic accountability, and goes by the much duller official title ‘Oversight Board’ (aka the FOB) — has just made the biggest call of its short life: Facebook’s hand-picked ‘oversight’ panel has voted against reinstating former U.S. president Donald Trum...
