When William Faulkner Set the World Record for Writing the Longest Sentence in Literature: Read the 1,288-Word Sentence from Absalom, Absalom!

Image by Carl Van Vechten, via Wikimedia Commons “How did Faulkner pull it off?” is a question many a fledgling writer has asked themselves while struggling through a period of apprenticeship like that novelist John Barth describes in his 1999 talk "My Faulkner." Barth “reorchestrated” his literary heroes, he says, “in search of my writerly self... downloading my innumerable predecessors as only an insatiable green apprentice can.” Surely a great many writers can relate when Barth says, “it was...

Dorm-room-inspired hotels

If your college years were the best of your life and you’d love to relive those fond memories, there’s a way to do that without having to sign up for another four years of school — some hotel lines are mimicking the uber-cool feel of college dorm rooms for your nostalgic pleasure. But these are no hostels or college-kid bunking situations, and there’s no cafeteria food, inconsiderate roommates, or communal showers — they are luxurious and cool. If you’re ready to bring back your glory days in...

Small towns in the South to visit

The American South is home to incredible cities like New Orleans, Atlanta, Charleston, and Nashville. But some of the greatest gems can be found in charming small towns throughout the region, where the heritage, music, food, architecture, and famous southern hospitality of this beautiful, complicated, and often misunderstood region of the United States can truly be experienced. In these towns and small cities, visitors will find accents and sometimes languages that have faded from larger citie...

U.S.A. –-(Ammoland.com)- How stands John Winthrop's “city upon a hill” this Thanksgiving? How stands the country that was to be “a light unto the nations”?To those who look to cable TV for news, the answer must at the least be ambiguous. Ring in Spring with April’s Desktop Calendar!

Last Saturday my husband and I officially became grandparents! Our four kids who still live at home traveled with us to Oxford, Mississippi, to meet their new nephew, a precious baby boy named Maddux (after the great Braves’ picture—our son is quite the fan). I snapped these tulips on an early-spring day on the Oxford square, with the Lafayette County Courthouse hovering in the background. We got home Wednesday night and I promptly injured my hand on Thursday and ended up in the ER. I saw a h...

The White People's Party

A sadness will descend on Oxford, Mississippi this weekend, when the Ole Miss football team, the Rebels, will play the first home game of the season. It's a historic moment: beginning Saturday, the school's marching band -- aka "The Pride of the South" -- will drop "Dixie" from its repertoire. The "Dixie" diehards are apoplectic, of course. To hear them talk, they, and their Southern heritage, are being shoved into a closet. And it's so unfair. That closet is supposed to be for gay people in...

Data Mining

We are in a time in which information is abundant. Our government monitors information to determine threats to our country. Internet search engines monitor keywords typed as well as websites browsed to better market their advertisers towards the user. There are facilities, schools, companies, and non-profits whose sole objective it to mine for this data for various uses. The 23 best drunk foods in America

WHEN FOOD WRITERS discuss food, they should divide it into two categories: sober food and drunk food. Sober food is what you eat when you go to a fancy restaurant and want real artisanship put into your food. It’s what you want to spend lots of money on eating. Drunk food is what you shove down your throat after a night of heavy drinking in the misguided hope that it’ll absorb whatever alcohol hasn’t yet made it into your blood stream. As far as I’m concerned, one category isn’t better than the ...
