25 years after the Northridge earthquake, another one could hit ‘any time.’ Are we safer?

A quarter century has passed, but David Miller will never forget the sound. “It was like there was a freight train under my house,” he said, recalling the moment 25 years ago Thursday, Jan. 17, when the Earth’s plates suddenly slipped along a previously unknown fault 11 miles beneath his Prairie Street home in Northridge. Firefighters work to free trapped residents at the Northridge Meadows Apartments on Reseda Blvd in Northridge CA. (Los Angeles Daily News/SCNG) Firefighters examine the ...

Radio: Is the holiday classic ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ inappropriate for 2018?

“We’re letting people who can’t think do our thinking for us.” That was the reaction by Roger of Pacific Palisades when he read on social media that WDOK/Cleveland had pulled the song “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” from the playlist during its around-the-clock holiday music format it currently airs. A call from a listener stating that the song is inappropriate for 2018 is the reason, according to news reports. A poll on the station’s Facebook page showed that, as of press time, 94 percent of listener...

Pro-Approved Whitening Toothpastes You Don't Have To Splurge On

The trusted dentist’s recommendation is classic canon in the toothpaste ad sales game. Sometimes, a voiceover tells us that nine out of 10 dentists prefer a certain toothpaste. Other times, a white-coated “dentist” (who may or may not be an actor) explains why a particular paste is the only one good enough for his or her own teeth. Either way, we never really know what dentists like best. It’s a worthy question that we even neglect to ask at our own dental appointments, as we become so overwhel...

In new book with Kobe Bryant, Andy Bernstein captures the essence of the Mamba

LOS ANGELES — In the days before you could share photos with a few taps on your phone, Andy Bernstein needed to get a photo to Kobe Bryant. He knew it was significant as soon as he looked at the print: an image taken from the catwalk at the top of the arena of Bryant, then a rising superstar, leaping on a breakaway dunk with his arm outstreched and his feet curled up behind him against the backdrop of a golden Lakers court at the Great Western Forum. Bernstein made a second print, 30 by 50 inche...
