Peaking from the Peak

Saturday was ride day this past weekend and Colin's general plan was "somewhere out East with grub at Porangahau".  This appeared to be enough to entice Brett and John along too - although I think that John wanted to put some miles on his 120km old 1290...Anyway the plan was to meet in Pahiatua before heading out towards Pongaroa.  I got underway a bit early at just after 8 so got in my only [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Bush Riders Trail Ride

On Sunday the Bush Riders had arranged another trail ride just out of Pahiatua and as I'd missed another ride the weekend before I had to be there. We had a bit of rain the night before so I was a wondering what the day would be like and perhaps of more concern, how slippery things would be.  In the end the forecast mentioned showers but they didn't happen. It was actually a very nice day on a [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Hot Lap

After the mammoth tyre wrangling of Saturday, Sunday was always going to be play day.  But, rather than scrub in those new tyres on the Ten, the neglected Connie needed a decent little run.Colin and John rocked up to my place some time after 9am and after a bit of a natter we decided that we should go for a ride.  Our adventure started with the short squirt over to Pahiatua where the lads [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Tar surfing

Last weekend Colin and I had a little TT planning session and he mentioned that we had better go riding this weekend.  So, on Friday night he contacted me and said that he and his mate Carl were coming up for a scoot. The eagles beemwaas landed at around 9 and after a bit of messing around in town we headed off to hit the track.   From Pahiatua we crossed over onto Pahiatua-Pongaroa Road [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Scrubbing in

Sunday was a cracker of a day and there were these new tyres that needed some scrubbing.  After the usual dog walking and such I decided to check out the Tagorama thread and go in search of the tag.As it turned out, the tag was an easy find but a wee bit of a peddle to get to.  I decided to make a bit of a loop out of it and you'll see that on the map further down the page. The trip over the Pahiatua track was good but I did show a little respect to the new tyres and didn't push them too hard.  T...

Popping out for some greasies

On Saturday morning I got a phone call from Colin F who asked me if I was keen for a little ride over in Hawkes Bay on Sunday.  I'm not good at coming up with excuses on the spot so ended up saying the first thing that came to mind...yes...Come Sunday, me, the Tenere and her bald rear tyre fuelled up in town and rode around to meet Colin where he was busy adjusting his chain (what's that?) on his shiny new Africa Twin.  After a bit of ogling at bikes we got organised and Colin led the way out of...

2017 1KC

Yesterday was the running of this year's NZDR 1KC.  Another great excuse for getting up early and riding all day with like minded maniacs...The weather forecast had been firmly in the "not great" category leading up to the ride so I'd finally bought some new wet weather gear to hopefully just take along for the ride.  With any luck it could just stay in the topbox for the day...Because the ride starts in Upper Hutt, the Palmy riders have to be even madder than the others and get up extra early t...

Hooning around Herbertville

Well, it seemed like forever since the poor old Tenere has been let off its leash and taken for a decent gravel ride so today was the day to fix that.Yesterday I'd been trying to chase down a slow leak in the front tyre and didn't really get anywhere so after checking it again this morning I decided that I was good to go.I'd posted a note up on FB last night to see if there was anyone else out there interested in a ride and my bait hooked me a Rodney again.  We agreed to meet in town and when I ...

Eastern gravel

With Monday being a public holiday (the Queen is good for something) and it not being a bad day, it seemed rude not to head out for another pootle - this time giving the Tenere a little love.I haven't been over the other side of the hill for a while (the gorge has been shut for over a month which makes the track and the saddle a lot busier and a lot less fun) so leaving the driveway I pointed the bike East. The track was dry and there wasn't as much traffic as I'd feared, so I was across the hill...

2016 1KC

Yesterday was the Distance Riders 1K Cruise and obviously I couldn't miss out on this nice little pootle - and it was also time for the Connie to get a little action...As usual, us Palmy riders (James, Monie and I) started in Palmy at 05:00 and after little sleep - the damn rain kept waking me - I was up at 4 getting my act together.  I bet the other 2 to the BP and got tanked up while watching some other guys trying to sort out a crappy old ute on the forecourt - a little early morning entertai...

Soggy Tag

This weekend I left my riding pretty late and almost didn't get one in.  On Sunday the weather was a little hit and miss but by lunchtime I was starting to get pretty desperate and decided that I was going anyway.  Besides, Al had posted up a new tag (after nabbing my one in less than 24 hours) and I was fairly sure where it was... A tagoholic's horse As Al had mentioned gravel (40m of the stuff apparently), I decided that this was a Tenere ride so loaded the blue beast up and left hom...

Scrubbing in

So after all the recent maintenance (if you call tyres and oil maintenance?) on the Connie it was time to let her off the leash and go for a decent run.The weather in Palmy was quite nice but I didn't really have a plan in mind.  I was even considering going a decent distance and spending the night somewhere - but where?  I quick check of KB and I spotted Al's tag so thought that I could at least grab it and then find another new one somewhere along the way... On the way across I remembered spo...

May BRRBT

Yesterday was our monthly Black Top ride and for reason I decided that I'd better try out the new beast on some back roads... Purdy! Rocking up to the garage meeting point there was already a fair few riders waiting for the kick-off and I wasn't the only one sporting some new tarmac eating tackle. Terry's mint Cross Tourer We also had a few BRRBT newbies on all sorts of two-wheeled creations. Leaving Ashhurst we pootled through the gorge and even had to stop at some traffi...

Been a while...

Yeah, the poor old Connie has been neglected for a few weeks so today after spoiling her with a quick bath I saddled up for a nice little run.Heading out of town I avoided getting run into by a car and demonstrated the effectiveness of my Stebel before having a nice little boogie over the Pahiatua track to warm things up.  In Pahiatua I stopped for fuel as I was not quite sure where I was heading but pretty certain that without fuel it would be a whole lot harder. In the end I decided to make f...

BRRBT Dreyers Rock and Roll

Today started off fairly early but it did start off very well: Pinched from 1 of around a million facebook posts... After celebrating with some breakfast it was time to go and meet up with the BRRBT team for our monthly ride.Getting to the gas station only Barry was there but we were eventually joined by Colin, Neil and Terry - a smaller mob this time, perhaps the others were still celebrating? We waited around for a little while just in case there was a few late-comers but in the end i...

2015 1KC

Yesterday was the annual 1KC (formerly C1KC) so that meant a very early start for the Manawatu gang as we both start and finish in Palmy but ride down to meet up with the Wellington group at their start.  There were 7 of us who hit the road at about 5am and engaged high-beam on our way down. Clive's mighty DR - knobblies an' 'all... It was a little chilly on the way down but we did get to enjoy a pleasant ride and to see the sun come up.  In Wellington we didn't muck around too much ...

Kicking off '16 properly

Staying up and seeing the New Year in is not a priority of mine but starting off the New Year with a pootle is always the best way to start the new year!I'd had a call from Neil mentioning a ride down to Wellington to visit a mending Nev (damn Triumphs!) and that was enough to get me out in the shed checking to see if the Connie was all set for some action.  Naturally she was - after all she's only got 132,000km on her and no, she is still not for sale...So, in the morning I got away a bit too e...

Summer?

Yesterday Mark and I had a bit of mission to take care of in Lower Hutt and with it being summer and all, I ditched the waterproof liners from my gear.  As it turns out this wasn't the smartest move...Mark rocked up to my place just before 8 and we hit the road South.  We were very well behaved on the way down but by the time we got to the Paicok Hill turn-off there were the odd patches of damp road and a few spits in the air.  The higher we clambered up the hill the damper it got until we were ...

Whibley races away with crosscountry title

After more than a decade of racing overseas, Paul Whibley said it was extremely satisfying to return home and win a New Zealand title on Sunday. Pahiatua's Whibley made it look easier than it was as he raced to victory at the New Zealand Crosscountry Championships 40 kilometres east of Pahiatua on Sunday.
