5 Years On…The Death of the DSLR Revisited

A little over 5 years ago, we posted an article questioning whether the death of the DSLR had been greatly exaggerated. It was one of a raft of articles by various writers on various websites. Some were very much of the opinion the DSLR was dead, others thought it was absurd that mirrorless would be the future. All the articles were well reasoned, based in fact and created heated discussion within the community.   In our article, we looked at how smartphones had killed the compact camera market...

Lowepro and the 'T' Bags

I'm currently looking around for a camera bag again, which is, to a photographer, the equivalent of a nasty fungus in an embarrassing place that flares up from time to time: just part of the burden of our existence. Because everyone knows two things: 1.) most bags will serve, if you'll just relax and adapt and get over it. And 2.) no bag is ever just exactly right. I don't care—shop all you want—devote your life to it—you'll never find it. It's not out there. That's the whole gestalt with camera...

E-bikes, am I right? The Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas is this week, so we aren’t too surprised to have our inbox inundated with all things that need to be plugged in. Reloop’s new RP-8000 MK2: instrumental pitch control, Serato integration

Like the relaunched Technics 1200, the new Reloop decks sport digitally controlled motors. But Reloop have gone somewhere very different from Technics: platters that can be controlled at a full range of pitches, and even play scales. And the RP-8000 MK2 is a MIDI controller, too, for Serato and other software. Oh yeah, and one other thing – Reloop as always is more affordable – a pair of RP-8000 MK2s costs the same as one SL-1200 MK7. (One deck is EUR600 / USD700 / GBP525). And there’s a trend...

This AI food truck could bring fresh produce directly to you

It’s no secret that artificial intelligence is trending worldwide, which is why it is also a prominent component of CES 2019. But as interest in futuristic tech grows, so does consumer interest in fresh, local food. The farm-to-table concept continues to gain popularity, which is why Panasonic has proposed an innovative mash-up of these two seemingly polar opposites — an AI mobile delivery service that operates like an ice cream truck to bring local fruits, vegetables and other grocery items di...

yeast/rising question

yeast/rising question Submitted by Wulfsige on January 10, 2019 - 1:01am. My strong-whtie bread from our Panasonic breadmaking machine has not risen. Why? Three thoughts for your comments, please:Is the Allinson's Easy Bake Yeast for Bread Makers and Hand Baking too old? The tin says use within four months of opening, but we have had it a lot longer than that. Does yeast lose its effectiveness? If the yeast does not lose its power to raise bread, should I continue to use it but add a...

Panasonic Lumix S1 and S1R coming in March and they have two new features

Panasonic’s announcement from CES today talks about the upcoming Lumix S1 and S1R cameras announced at Photokina. On initial announcement, not a lot of information was released. The Technics SL-1200 is back, and this time for DJs again

First it was dead. Then, it came back but … inexplicably cost four thousand bucks and seemed to be for audiophiles, not DJs. Now, at last, the iconic* Technics SL-1200 turntable is back, and in a newly-manufactured form that might actually suit DJs. The pitch: take advanced tech, learned from Blu-ray players, and turn it into an accessible turntable that delivers the performance and playing style of traditional players, with greater reliability and better sound. If you don’t particularly ...

Panasonic Returns the Technics 1200 Turntable to Its DJ Roots With the new MK7

At CES 2016, Panasonic revived the Technics 1200 turntable line which had last been updated with the MK6 back in 2008. The pricey Grand Class Technics SL-1200G was targeted at audiophiles, however, while the 1200’s biggest fanbase had been mostly DJs who loved its high-torque, direct-drive platter. Two years later,…Read more...

Sunday Support Group: OC/OL/OY (and Mike's Camera Decision)

From time to time I suggest little exercises—well, okay, sometimes some big ones too—for people to consider. I love learning, and learners naturally teach. One of those exercises was called OC/OL/OY—one camera, one lens, one year. Here's a description of it on PetaPixel*. So...it's January...time for resolutions...which I am notoriously bad at keeping...and I'm thinking...well, that maybe I should take my own advice and do a OC/OL/OY. I've actually done a OC/OL/OY before, several times. Mainly b...

In 2018, SONY Moved the Cheese

Exhibit 2: In 2018, mighty Nikon followed in Sony's footsteps too. Exhibit 3: In 2018, Sony got Panasonic, its largest and fiercest competitor among Japanese electronics giants, to depart from its exclusive dedication to Micro 4/3 and take the plunge into competing with its (Sony's) full-frame mirrorless (FFM) line as well.  I...

Camera of the Year?

So what should be our Camera of the Year for 2018? I have a pretty good idea. Looking only at enthusiast cameras, there weren't actually very many all-new cameras. Many, from the Lumix LX100II to the Leica M10P, were derivations of already-existing models. This is a salutary trend in my opinion. Refinement of technological objects is a very important aspect of their creation and development, and I actually like, and approve of (expect, even), the trend towards Mark II, III, etc., iterations. Fuj...

2018's Best of Cool Tools, Part 1: Powered

Rather than cover the shop and homeowner tools that most of you already know, this time we're going to focus primarily on the unusual specialty tools you've probably never heard of. Getting right up to the edge of obstacles with a lawnmower is slow and often requires multiple passes. So this amazing German lawnmower attachment that cuts around poles and fenceposts looks pretty goshdarned amazing. Another incredible landscaping tool: This Italian machine cuts perfectly spherical shrubs! The...

SUV Cameras (Careful There, Snarky Blogger!)

Yesterday, talking about the Panasonic G9, John McMillin wrote: "For an even more instant, 1/4-sec. first impression, I clicked on the B&H link and saw the photo. 'So much camera, so little sensor!' Maybe it's big enough for good IQ, but looking at those broad, square fenders and that needlessly domed pseudo-pentaprism on top, I'm more reminded of an F-150: 'Its small inside, but big outside!'" Okay, but for some of us small sensors are a feature, not a bug. The lenses can be much smaller. My 24...

The Panasonic G9 is the Porsche 911 of Cameras

So—big surprise—the G9 is not what I thought it would be. First of all, that idea I had about using the same sensor as the GX8? Out the window. The G9's sensor/processor makes pictures look quite different than pictures from the GX8. In some ways the files are better. And I don't think I like them quite as well—I miss the GX8's special sauce. But they're different. Meanwhile, wow, what a great camera. This is just great fun to use. One can deconvolute all the details to death, and I'm sure I wil...

5 Things I Love About Vlogging

It’s pretty clear at this point that if video isn’t already playing a significant role in your overall content strategy, you’ve fallen behind. While you may not necessarily want to dabble in every possible platform that supports video, from Instagram’s IGTV to Facebook Live, you should include video as part of your overall branding and engagement. And particularly if you’re already a blogger, becoming a vlogger is a natural extension for your audience to get to know you better. Even though I ha...

OLED Panels For PC Monitors Coming in 2019

JOLED, the Japanese Display, Sony, and Panasonic group has announced that new OLED solutions for PC monitors are expected to hit the market in 2019. We've seen OLED screens make their way into smartphones and TV's, but we have yet to see them in PC monitors. This is likely to some of the issues OLED display's have had (burn-in).
