When Dr. Raj Panjabi talks about starting his nonprofit, Last Mile Health, he describes being motivated by both love and outrage. At nine years old, Panjabi had to flee his home in Liberia to escape civil war; he and his family relocated to the U.S. When Panjabi returned to his home country as a medical…

A Harvard doctor just won $1 million for a project that could prevent the next deadly pandemic

Before the Ebola virus ravaged West Africa, killing thousands and leaving entire towns reeling, it started small. The virus wound its way out of a rainforest-adjacent village in Guinea and spread through other rural areas in Liberia and Sierra Leone, going undetected for months. By the time the world realized what was happening, it was too late to stop the virus's spread. It's hard to find outbreaks if people aren't actively looking for them. And in  rural communities across the world, people l...

Practicing humanistic, patient-centered medicine requires doctors to stifle their humanity

Just before the holidays, I was treating a woman with severe pneumonia. As I examined her, day after day, she told me about her family, their plans for Thanksgiving, and how much she missed her children. I liked her. I cared about her. I even used the promise of free Wi-Fi to convince her teenage daughter to come see her. The day before she went home, as I had done every day, we talked about her treatment plan. A couple of hours later, I got a page — this patient was angry because she said she h...

Is This The New Olivia Pope?

Olivia Pope is great and all, but she can't be on TV 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Shondaland has filled our cups to overflowing with no-nonsense heroines who cut through problems like a bunch of corgis through a snow trench. Now, an upcoming Fox pilot could give us another Pope-like figure. The still-untitled project is from Scandal co-executive producer Judy Smith. Smith herself is the basis for Pope, using experiences from her time as a press aide in George H.W. Bush's administration. What Teens Want You To Know About The State Of Sex Ed

Remember high school sex ed? If you were lucky enough to get any curriculum on sex, it probably consisted of a couple of slides of diseased genitals, an explanation of wet dreams and maybe a real-life demo of a condom rolled onto a banana. If you found this brief and cursory explanation of human sexuality absolutely useless when it came to navigating relationships with real, live people, you’re not alone. A new global analysis finds that students experience sex ed as out of touch, insensitive, ...

Crush of the week: Archie Panjabi

‘Nobody else on TV has smouldered quite like her, or rocked knee-length boots with such panache’I ticked off a long-term goal on my to-do list when I interviewed actor Archie Panjabi. If you don’t recognise her name, you’re sure to know her face – for the last five years she has played the morally flexible investigator Kalinda Sharma in More4’s legal drama The Good Wife, winning an Emmy for her performance. In that time, nobody else on TV has smouldered quite like her, or rocked knee-length boot...
