Flames’ Monahan an Understated Star

The Calgary Flames head into the All-Star break in the midst of another stellar run as they continued their winning ways with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. A key contributor during this impressive 8-0-1 stretch has been Sean Monahan.  The talented 24-year-old has registered five goals and five assists in the past nine contests and continues to chug along as one of the NHL’s understated superstars. While it’s been Monahan’s dynamic linemate Johnny Gaudreau and captain...

Panthers Hoping for Another Late-Season Surge

The Florida Panthers are hoping for deja vu. Sort of. A year ago, the Panthers shook off a disastrous start to the season and caught fire after the All-Star break — only to miss the playoffs by a single point. This year, they’re heading into the break on a three-game winning streak and playing perhaps their best hockey of the season after spending the first three months of the year sputtering near the bottom of the NHL. So here they go again, trying for another late and improbable playoff push. ...

Markstrom Is the Canucks’ Second-Biggest Surprise

The Vancouver Canucks are doing much better than anyone predicted at the start of the 2018-19 season. For Canuck fans, there are two obvious reasons. First, Elias Pettersson has emerged as bona fide star. Watch him walking into the locker room prior to a game and he looks a bit “bookish.” On the ice, he’s little short of amazing. In less than half a season, he’s established himself as the team’s current star and bright light for the future. He’s been the greatest surprise of the Canucks’ s...

Goalie Announcements (Jan 21)

It's All-Star week in the NHL, coupled with bye weeks for the Metropolitan Division, so the games are very limited this week and there won't be a ton of action or points for that matter. 15 games in total, Monday through Wednesday, starting with four games today, three with early starts thanks to it being Martin Luther King Day in the US. These early starts are a killer in a new week, so [Author: Clayton Corley]

Timeline of Paul Holmgren, Bob Clarke and the Flyers

The pro sports world is inherently exclusive and insular, but there may not be many pro sports franchises out there as insular as the Philadelphia Flyers. The team is now in its 52nd year. The two men who currently hold the reins behind its hockey operations have been part of its history, whether as players, coaches or executives, for all but three of those years. On the team’s front office page, the pair appear as the first two names listed below Comcast Spectacor CEO and Chairman Dave Scott: P...

Panthers owner suggests Andrew Luck-style year off could be best for Cam Newton's shoulder injury

Cam Newton's season ended with the Carolina Panthers quarterback on the bench with a shoulder injury after a miserable stretch of games. Now, the Panthers' owner seems to think the 29-year-old could use much, much more time off. Principal owner David Tepper spoke with reporters Tuesday about the possibility of Newton resting or undergoing a second shoulder surgery.

Goalie Announcements (Jan 15)

Well, for most teams, Monday night was a fairly successful night.  There were six games on the schedule and the pool managed to pull out 91 points, by my initial, unofficial count, which worked out to be just over 15 points per game.  Man, if we kept that rate up, we'd all be laughing. Scott's team probably took my Basement Dweller nod to heart yesterday, so they came out firing on Monday [Author: Clayton Corley]

David Tepper walks fine line on Eric Reid allegations

Panthers owner David Tepper gave Eric Reid a job when no other team was willing to. And with the Panthers safety accusing the league (and by extension, the NFLPA) for singling him out for excessive random drug tests, his boss tried to navigate carefully around questions about his situation. Asked if he shared Reid's view that he was being unfairly targeted, Tepper spent a moment as a member of the small club of owners, before letting his guard down a bit.
