The Easter Mysteries And The Mystic Way

The very reason why Christ sent out his love on the first Pentecost day was so that it could enter into all who would receive it. This love that would draw us up into his mystical body and then into his mystical contemplation of his Father was God’s plan from the beginning so that through contemplating his glory we would ultimately be drawn into that glory. When in human love a person gazes on God’s glory depicted in this man or that woman’s beauty, love wants to go further. It does not just wa...

Cal Fire to speed up the thinning of forests to lessen wildfire risks

After successive years of devastating wildfires, California’s fire agency announced a plan Tuesday that would dramatically increase removal of dead trees and other forest management efforts with the help of the National Guard. Cal Fire released a list of 35 priority fuel-reduction projects it wants to start immediately across the state over roughly 90,000 acres. That’s double the acreage the agency aimed to cover in the current fiscal year, Deputy Chief Scott McLean said. Dead trees and dry brus...

Paradise lost: A woman struggles to reclaim her life after the Camp fire

Dippi taught her to push harder, to fight through. When JayaMae Gregory was down, she loved to head out on Dippi, over the trails outside Paradise, where she had moved to start a new life. JayaMae trained Dippi to be an endurance horse. The plan was for JayaMae’s teenage son Jakob to compete with Dippi in 100-mile races. Dippi was a grey mare, half Arab, a horse with the countenance of a freight train. Huge strides on the trail. Dippi’s given name was DC Reindeer Dippin, shortened to Dippi becau...

California land managers hope to speed up forest-thinning projects to slow wildfires

SACRAMENTO — California wildland managers said Tuesday that they want to speed up logging and prescribed burns designed to slow wildfires that have devastated communities in recent years. After the deadliest and most destructive blazes in state history, officials are scrapping 12 years of efforts and starting anew on creating a single environmental review process to cover projects on private land, such as cutting back dense stands of trees and setting controlled fires to burn out thick brush. A ...

It's Expensive To Be On The Bachelor, But Contestants Make It All Back On Instagram

Since The Bachelor 's inaugural season in 2002, there have been 23 Bachelors, 14 Bachelorettes, many tears, many Laurens, a few babies, and a whole new vernacular including such terms as "two-on-one" and "hometowns." And 17 years later, there's still no shortage of hopefuls looking to find love on TV — or, if that doesn't work out, at least a long and prosperous Instagram sponcon career.Which prompts the question: How much can participants expect to milk from their few weeks of fame? Gavin Newsom becomes a main face of the anti-Trump ‘resistance’

No sooner had Gavin Newsom taken the oath of office as governor than he made it clear he will not fear becoming the new face of the national “resistance” to President Trump. Before Newsom took office, plenty of other Democrats were fighting Trump’s policies, which aim to reverse multiple environmental and social policies designed by both Democratic and Republican presidents of the last 50 years. In his own state, United States Sen. Kamala Harris assiduously set herself up to run for president wi...

Empirical SCOTUS: If Ginsburg leaves, it could be the liberals’ biggest loss yet – A look back at previous justices replaced with more conservative successors

The saga over Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s health seems to ebb and flow from the headlines almost daily. Part of the mystery relates to the amount of information shared with the public. We know that, while treating Ginsburg for rib fractures, doctors found malignant lesions in her lungs that were promptly removed, and that subsequent tests have shown no evidence of any other cancer. Ginsburg has since missed oral arguments and is reportedly recovering at home while keeping current with the cour...

Trump’s ‘trifecta of ineptitude’ on fires

When I got on the conference call with Gov. Gavin Newsom, along with six other California editorial writers Thursday afternoon, I was thinking back to newspaper photographs from the aftermath of the Camp fire. The then-governor-elect was helping tour President Donald Trump through the devastated town of Paradise. As they walked through Paradise lost, the many images shot that day by photojournalists showed a somewhat astounding — and then again, very humanly understandable — amount of touchy-fee...

Spring & summer are definitely my favorite seasons in the Northwest, but I love to try out all the fun snow sports every winter with my family. We are so fortunate here in the western parts of the Northwest to be so close to the mountains, yet thankfully we have mainly mild temperatures in most locations. This Rancho Cucamonga woman and her dog searched the ruins of the Camp Fire for remains

Sharon Gattas spent Thanksgiving this year among the ruins of the largest fire in modern California history, the Camp Fire that leveled the Northern California town of Paradise. “I am not a firefighter, I don’t run towards fire,” the Rancho Cucamonga woman said. “My husband did that; he’s nuts.” What she can do, however, is train dogs to help in times of disaster. “The dogs we choose to do this are the dogs that most people throw away,” Gattas said. “They are terrible pets. They chew up your spr...

I Was Born to Do This

One of the many characters in the French nativity santon, hand painted over a hundred years ago. Carries two baskets from the market filled with cabbage. Some brought incenses, some brought gold, some came by with their lambs and drums; The French santons, the many characters of the village come to the Provencal nativity, 'it takes a village" comes to mind when I see them set up. I collect the old shabby looking ones, but the characters never change, I love this one who brings cabbages,...

The new abnormal: why fires like Paradise will happen again and again

Of the traumatic consequences of climate change, scientists consider increasingly ferocious wildfires to be one of the most starkly apparentRuth McLarty, an experienced surgeon, was fairly certain she was about to die in a particularly grisly way. Surrounded by a hellish inferno of burning trees and cars, McLarty reasoned the flames would engulf her long before the smoke could choke her to death.Trapped in nearby vehicles, some of McLarty’s colleagues made similarly macabre calculations. Two nur...

CHICO, Calif. (AP) — Patty Rough lost her Paradise home and most of her belongings in the Camp Fire, and she had no place to cook a family meal on Thanksgiving. But she and her husband are safe, and she was still able to spend the holiday with her children over plates of turkey, cranberry sauce and pie at a feast for thousands of people put on by volunteers. She’s sad about everything she lost but realizes that others have far less. “Today we’re grateful; I don’t know about happy,” she said, t...

I am thankful for everything in that familiarity.   - - - Our flight path flew over Paradise as smoke billowed and rolled into the valley, the clear sky turned ash gray. Since we have been home the stories of family, friends, and others who live in Paradise and the surrounding area have been shared.  Utter lost, courageous acts, enormous guilt, so raw and tangible that the listening heart stretches out like a casted net rendering a tender place to land before ...

Why didn't they evacuate in time?

MAGALIA, Calif. (AP) — Ten years ago, as two wildfires advanced on Paradise, residents jumped into their vehicles to flee and got stuck in gridlock. That led authorities to devise a staggered evacuation plan — one that they used when fire came again last week. But Paradise's carefully laid plans quickly devolved into a panicked exodus on Nov. 8. Some survivors said that by the time they got warnings, the flames were already extremely close, and they barely escaped with their lives. Others sai...

When the Hometown You Always Knew Could Burn Gets Erased from the Map -- Paradise is Lost to the #CampFire

Let's talk about the Camp Fire for a second. My family moved to Paradise in 1991, as I was starting 8th grade. I lived there through high school, until heading to college. The family stayed until all kids had graduated high school - the last in 2004. (This story is adapted from a thread I initially posted on Twitter) This was us at home in '91. While news has referred to Paradise as isolated, we actually were moving from an even smaller town. I'd spent elementary school in Brownsville in Yuba ...
