Tight Budget but Want to Party? These Are the Cities Least Expensive for Drinking

What’s the best part of a social gathering? The eating and drinking, of course.  Unfortunately, for many social butterflies and party-goers, the costs associated with drinking can really add up and put a dent in your wallet. One drink turns into two and two turns into agreeing to pitch in on a bottle or pitcher of margaritas. If you’re someone that frequents bars and restaurants, this is a major expense to occur. It’s no wonder so many people revolve social gatherings around places with th...

Patreon enters the micro-lending game with Patreon Capital

Patreon, a platform for creators to earn monetary support from fans, is busting out the checkbook. The startup isn’t playing VC quite yet with newly-launched Patreon Capital but they are hocking non-equity cash advances (loans!) for Patreon customers in need of some extra cash for big creative rollouts. Patreon has already made about a dozen of these micro-loans to creators, Hot Pod reports. Patreon, which has raised $165 million, seems unlikely to massively overhaul its fee structure for its ex...

Disqualification of a Party’s Expert Who Migrates to the Firm of a Court-Appointed Expert

By David Hricik, Mercer Law School An order by Judge Alsup in Oracle Am., Inc. v. Google, LLC (N.D. Cal. Jan 28, 2020 (here)) reflects an unusual fact pattern.  The court had appointed an expert (in docket 2143, which by itself says a lot) who worked with the firm of Charles River Associates (“CRA”).  Google had an expert, Dr. Leonard.  Google notified Oracle that Dr. Leonard was to become “affiliated” with CRA, prompting Oracle to file an “objection” with the court. In response, Judge Alsup iss...

In New Hampshire, Democratic Voters Are Paralyzed by Fear of Making the Wrong Choice

This is the room that scares the crap out of the Democratic establishment: a college gymnasium in Keene, N.H., packed to the rafters with nearly 2,000 Bernie Sanders fans joyfully noodle-dancing to a Vermont-based jam band playing a raucous cover of the Talking Heads song “Burning Down the House.” A little while later, Sanders takes the stage, accompanied by his wife, three children and two grandchildren. “Thank you, Twiddle!” he says. Then he stops to reflect on how far he’s come since his...

A profile in conscience

Imagine know a doctor must feel when he’s about to tell a patient bad news. He’s not going to make any friends, but the chart says what it says. Given the events of last week, I suspect today’s column will not earn me any new friends. I voted for Mitt Romney for president in 2012. I believed he was right on the big issues, including health care, illegal immigration and how to stimulate sustainable growth after the terrible recession, and beyond. He also correctly called Russia our enemy. Preside...

Furious Democrats call for Tom Perez's resignation after Iowa fiasco

Apparent attempts by Democratic National Committee Chair Tom Perez to absolve himself of responsibility over the Iowa caucus fiasco have sparked many in the party to begin calling for his resignation. "It's a lack of leadership," Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio) told The Hill in an interview Friday. "If you have the Iowa situation you don't throw them under the bus, you stand up and you support and you try to fix it. He doesn't lead on anything."Party insiders have been particularly rankle...

Republican Senators Laugh Off Trump Jr.’s Cry To Boot Romney From The Party

Immediately after Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) announced that he would vote to convict President Donald Trump on the abuse of power impeachment article, Donald Trump Jr. raised a battle cry to expel Romney from the party. Mitt Romney is forever bitter that he will never be POTUS. He was too weak to beat the Democrats then so he’s joining them now. Coronavirus Crisis Shows China's Governance Failure

Wuhan's mayor blamed higher-ups. A senior disease control official blamed layers of bureaucracy. A top government expert blamed the public: The people, he said, simply didn't understand what he told them.As China grapples with a mysterious coronavirus outbreak that has killed more than 420 people and sickened thousands, the country's 1.4 billion people are asking what went wrong. Senior officials are engaging in an unusually blunt display of finger pointing. So many officials have den...

Iowa Caucus Debacle is One of the Most Stunning Tech Failures Ever

The Iowa caucus debacle represents one of the most stunning failures of information security ever. From a column: This failure was delivered by the same Iowa Democratic Party officials who have said for the last four years they were "ramping up" their technology capabilities, convening seemingly endless security task forces to ensure foreign powers did not disenfranchise voters, and collaborating with federal agencies like the Department of Homeland Security to make sure everyone was in the loop...
