Just two games after he returned after missing 12 consecutive games with right knee soreness, Beverley sustained the break while reaching for a rebound in the fourth quarter Thursday. The...

Marvin Hagler kept knocking on doors, and knocking out foes, until the world answered

Marvin Hagler did not play boxing. He brought every real slight and thousands of perceived ones into every ring. Usually he walked out and the other guy was carried. Fighting Hagler was not a career enhancer. He got more hang-ups than a telemarketer. Joe Frazier once told Hagler that he had three obstacles: “You’re black, you’re a southpaw and you can punch.” Hagler also came up walking in his own shoes and riding nobody’s coattails. There were pretty faces all around: Ray Leonard, Ray Mancini, ...

All About The Players Emergency Fund

from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe, Established some 75 years ago as a financial safety net for ex-players, PEFA is funded solely by fines and suspensions to the current working help, as meted the last couple of decades by the Department of Player Safety. It’s there if needed, and scores of ex-players have been helped through the years, albeit through the unintended largesse of the bad characters who continue to make their donations.... Headed into the weekend, according to Da...

After 70 years – some lean, some tough, but all meaty – market, butcher counter still a cut above

As Mike McQuaid tells it, the Lookabaugh family opened a small, neighborhood grocery store on a two-lane dirt road called Fallbrook Avenue in 1946, selling the store a few years later “to a guy who sold it to another guy who sold it to my father” — a butcher who had been renting space in the store for his meat counter since 1951. The other owners had failed to see what the butcher saw when he looked into the future of Woodland Hills — a pot roast in every oven. There would be a massive change i...

REVIEW: Sonic Extra-Long Ultimate Cheesesteak

I haven’t had a cheesesteak since I made a pilgrimage to Geno’s and Pat’s in Philly almost a decade ago. I remember nervously asking for my “whiz without” like an apprehensive George Costanza ordering soup, and enjoying both sandwiches about the same. It was a tasty little trip, but I drove home feeling like an absolute slob. Two cheesesteaks in one sitting?! Gross, dude! I mean, one wasn’t quite enough, but two was definitely overkill. If only someone nearby could just make one, I don’t know, ...

Why this radio station is betting on sports gambling

Entercom is trying something new on its secondary HD digital stream for KCBS-FM, which can be heard if you have an HD radio at 93.1 HD3 as well as on the app available for smartphones. Called “The Bet,” it’s a bit of a gamble and replaces most, but not all, of the programming formerly heard on the station when it was running the CBS SportsRadio format. The format is designed to tap into a growing interest in sports gambling, which may indeed become legal in California sometime in the f...

Yotam Ottolenghi’s recipes for Valentine’s Day

A three-course showpiece to prep in advance, so you can spend more time with your better half: burnt aubergine with feta and harissa oil, prawns in vanilla and rum butter, and a chocolatey coffee mousse to finish This time last year, many of us were looking forward to a special, one-to-one supper with a loved one. The partner we live with, for example, but perhaps forget to go on dates with; a special meal, quality time, stories saved up to be shared. The past year has, of course, brought a whol...

Sometimes a small step is a major milestone

Sometimes a small step is a major milestone Submitted by HeiHei29er on February 4, 2021 - 7:14pm. I started looking into sourdough baking in late November, and since that time, the learning curve has been steep and often times like drinking from a fire hose.  I've made bread in the past using packets of IDY and looking up a recipe on the internet.  Mix it up.  Throw it in a slightly warmed oven till it doubles.  Pat it down, roll it into a log, throw it in a bread pan, and put...

Recipes: Flank steak is a cut above, especially with the right topping

Easy enough for a weeknight supper, but delicious enough for company dinners. The juicy flank steak slices fan out, lightly overlapping on plate or platter. Alluringly browned on the exterior and rosy pink in the interior, the luscious meat is augmented with a delectable, complementary topping. Flank steak is truly a tasty cut, with deep, rich beefy flavor. Yes, that’s when it is correctly cooked and sliced. It needs to be cooked rare or medium-rare and thinly sliced across the grain. I can reme...

Clippers cool off from 3-point range – and not at a great time

It wasn’t going to rain forever. Even as the Clippers were draining 44.1% of their 3-point shots – a breakneck pace more prolific than even the 1996-97 Charlotte Hornets’ historic season-long rate of 42.7% – Coach Tyronn Lue figured the downpour would relent eventually. “We know we’re going to have some nights where we don’t shoot the ball as well,” Lue said on Jan. 20, a night when the Clippers shot it just fine, going 16 for 35 from deep to beat Sacramento, 115-96. And when that happens, Lue a...
