Visiting Chile’s Route of the Parks

Patagonia awes all who visit — whether they’ve come for the famous Torres del Paine route or another wild trek, to stay at an estancia and ride horses or explore the region’s glacier-fed lakes. Now, Chile has taken the Patagonia experience to the next level with the opening of a new route of epic proportions. Officially named La Ruta de los Parques, the Route of the Parks blazes a trail through the pristine and remote landscapes of Chilean Patagonia that have never been accessible before. Whe...

The Truth About You

IN THE January/February 2019 issue of Communication Arts, Ernie Schenck writes about two kinds of truth: authentic and inauthentic. Authentic truth is who you are. Inauthentic truth is who you are when everyone is looking. It’s accepting what the loudest voices around you are saying because you don’t want to look bad. It’s commonplace in politics, but we see it everywhere. It’s pandering. Not leadership. It’s denigrating. Not serving. Inauthentic leadership is selfish. We use it to get somethin...

Women’s Patagonia Hyper Puff Hoody Review

This is a jacket built for belays, frigid camps, and the moments when the weather just doesn’t want to cooperate. Patagonia paid close attention to the details when making a cold weather hoody that will offer protection from a myriad of undesirable weather conditions. Their new HyperDAS insulation utilizes a vertical orientation for the synthetic insulating fibers, instead of horizontal. The result? A highly durable synthetic puffy that retains its loft after rigorous use. Women’s Patagonia Hype...

The irony of Patagonia’s tax cut ‘protest’

The irony of Patagonia’s tax cut ‘protest’ In response to the recent Republican-led tax reform—which reduced corporate taxes from 35% to 21%—many companies have responded by handing out surprise bonuses, increased 401(k) matches, and various wage bumps. For a company like Patagonia, however, the tax cuts have been labeled “irresponsible,” a symbol of the federal government’s reckless apathy. In response, Patagonia CEO Rose Marcario recently announced that ...

Chilean Patagonia: an open-air lab to study climate change

In one of the most inhospitable places on Earth, the southernmost part of Chile's Patagonia region, scientists are studying whales, dolphins and algae in order to help predict how climate change will affect the world's oceans. For the study, four researchers from the Austral University of Chile embarked from Punta Arenas for the remote Seno Ballena fjord. The fjord currently produces the kind of conditions that should be seen in other marine systems in the next few decades, when dramatic chang...

How to Prepare for Trekking in Patagonia

This post is sponsored by Sporting Life but I hope you’ll keep reading as it’s packed with useful information. I’m heading to Patagonia this week to hike both the “O” Circuit in Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park and to do a few day hikes in Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina. I have spent in excess of 30 hours researching, planning and preparing for this trek in Patagonia. Four of us are doing it on our own and good information seems to be really hard to come by. Some of the advice mi...

Visual Design Concepts for Redesigned Patagonia Site and Mobile

Visual Design Concepts for Redesigned Patagonia Site and Mobile abduzeedoJan 08, 2019 Concept projects are always fun and give us the opportunity to work on different ideas or solutions for companies we love. I am a believer that any exercise is always worth doing. I would probably not use a concept project in my portfolio, unless it’s something that I believe highlights a particular set of skills, let’s say, motion design. With that in mind, I think everyone...

Thousands of Female Penguins Are Being Stranded in South America

Near the southern tip of South America, thousands of ladies -- wives, mothers, anchovy enthusiasts -- are vanishing from their nests. The females in question are Magellanic penguins -- a mid-size species of black-and-white bird native to South America's Patagonia region. When not breeding in the latter part of the year, both male and female members of the species migrate north toward Uruguay and Brazil to hunt for the tasty anchovies that call those waters home. Over the last decade, howeve...

Female penguins 'get stranded more because they travel further'

Longer journeys may exhaust females, say scientists tracking birds off South American coastEvery year, thousands of Magellanic penguins get stranded along the coast of South America – but puzzlingly, about 75% of those that get stuck are female. Now scientists say they have worked out what is behind the gender imbalance: the females migrate further north than males.Magellanic penguins finish breeding in Patagonia in February, and during the subsequent winter months head north, reaching as far as...

Female penguins are getting stranded along the South American coast

Every year, thousands of Magellanic penguins are stranded along the South American coast--from northern Argentina to southern Brazil -- 1,000 kilometers away from their breeding ground in northern Patagonia. Now researchers reporting in Current Biology on Jan. 7 have new evidence to explain the observation that the stranded birds are most often female: female penguins venture farther north than males do, where they are apparently more likely to run into trouble.

TILT Holdings, a publicly-traded marijuana company, said it is buying vaporizer company Jupiter Research for $210 million in cash and stock. Taking a stand for the future of sports marketing

Sport Industry recently published this article by We Are Social Sport Group Creative Director, Gareth Leeding discussing why 2018 was the year that sports marketing tried to save the world. They’ve been kind enough to let us reproduce it below. Sport has a place in the world to make people’s lives better. To unite communities around issues no matter how big or small. To raise awareness. To go where governments can’t, or won’t. To challenge the uncomfortable. 2018 was the year that brands took a ...

Brands that donate for conservation

Not to advocate consumerism, but you can actually do a bit of good with your dollar the next time you need to replace that tattered backpack or buy a new pair of skis. It takes a bit of research to find out who’s actually making a difference since “being green” is a trendy thing to do these days. These outdoors brands, though, really are eco-conscious, donating much-needed money to valuable environmental efforts. Here’s some of the good work they’re doing. Columbia Sportswear Photo: Columb...
