Sun Kil Moon – “Lemon Balm” (Feat. Petra Haden)

A few weeks ago, Sun Kil Moon's Mark Kozelek announced a new album called Welcome To Sparks, Nevada and shared its first single, a mellow and ruminative 11-minute song called "The Johnny Cash Trail." Today, Kozelek has dropped a video for another song from the album. The new joint "Lemon Balm" is just … More »

'Harmony' Is About As Bill Frisell As a Bill Frisell Recording Can Be

The other truly distinctive performance is a total reworking of Pete Seeger's "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?", which turns the familiar folk song into a chilly abstraction. In some ways, it reminds your ear more of Frisell's own short "Curiosity", which precedes it—a moody chamber miniature. "How Many Miles" is warmer Frisell original with a melancholy melody for the unison of Haden's voice and Roberts' cello. "Honest Man", also by the leader, floats similarly on a simple two-note motif.The...

I’ve Heard That Song Before: Reflecting on ‘Glee’ as It Turns 10

It seems to me I’ve heard that song before /  It’s from an old familiar score /  I know it well, that melody /  It’s funny how a theme recalls a favorite dream /  A dream that brought you so close to me /  I know each word because I’ve heard that song before – music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Sammy Cahn In high school, I was a Kurt. Or, at least, I would have been in a more precise way if my school had been big enough. I was a bit fey , not yet out, so opinionated that my art teacher ...

Photos: The Afghan Whigs and Har Mar Superstar at the Fonda Theatre

[See image gallery at buzzbands.la] The Afghan Whigs have some dedicated fans. Before they took the stage Friday night at the Fonda Theatre, several people in the front row were commenting on which other shows they had attended of this current tour, following the band from city to city and proving their loyalty by singing along to every word unfurled from the stage, including songs from the band’s latest albu, “In Spades,” released in May. Throughout the show, Greg Dulli and crew were joined by...

Diving Deep Into Amilia K Spicer’s Spellbinding Wow and Flutter

Los Angeles singer/songwriter releases albums at a pace that makes both Axl Rose and Kate Bush seem prolific. Wow and Flutter, Spicer’s first studio release since her sophomore album, Seamless (2003), plays like a greatest hits of songs that have been entrancing audiences for much of the past decade. When Spicer first hit the scene in 1999 with her debut, Like an Engine, she was kinda hard to peg. Folk, Rock, Americana and Country all swirled around in her dark and haunting mix, as did influence...

Photos: That Dog, Imperial Teen at the El Rey Theatre

[See image gallery at buzzbands.la] Twenty years to the day after the release of their third and final album, That Dog — OK, OK, that dog. — reconvened Saturday night at the El Rey Theatre for a night of good humor and sharp songs that felt, to fans of a certain age, a little bit like a college reunion. Anna Waronker and Rachel Haden were in both fine voice and spirits, and with Petra Haden sitting out this reunion show (she was there in 2011), the void was filled by backup vocalist Inara Georg...

Petra Haden and Jesse Harris: Seemed Like a Good Idea: Petra Haden Sings Jesse Harris (Review)

This is exquisite chamber rock. It is organic, free-range, artisanal pop music. If kale salad were to take on the character of jazz-inflected songwriting, it would be Seemed Like a Good Idea. [Author: Will Layman]
