PG&E upgrades transformers to natural ester

In California, Pacific Gas & Electric recently shared plans to rebuild a more reliable and safer power grid system following the wildfires of 2019 and one aspect is to replace the network’s traditional mineral oil transformers with safer and more efficient natural ester units. PG&E started this conversion before the fires and rolling blackouts, but it now plans to bring as many as 750,000 bio-based transformers online to mitigate risk, extend the life of the units and be more environmentally sen...

PG&E to use renewable diesel in mobile generators

In California, Utility Dive reports that Pacific Gas & Electric will use renewable diesel to power temporary mobile generators during public safety power shutoffs this year, at potentially more than the 20 power substations originally planned. The company is under increasing legal pressure as a result of actions that led to severe wildfires in 2018 and 2019. Stakeholders pushed back against the idea of the mobile generators except in the case of renewable diesel so the company is now looking at...

Privatized energy utilities are burning down their states, but antitrust can make them stop

Pacific Gas and Electric has gone from Wall Street darling to bankruptcy, thanks to the $30 billion in liability from the fires that were started in California by its power-lines. But while any long-haul, high-voltage line carries some risk, especially in a tinder-dry, drought-ravaged, climate wracked region of California, the fires were not inevitable. Back in 2007, San Diego Gas & Electric was held liable for the Witch Fires and was forced to adopt measures to prevent fires. They worked....

PGE embraces public in push for new renewables

Portland General Electric, rocked by deep opposition to new fossil-fuel infrastructure earlier this year, is now embracing the public as an ally as it pushes for more renewables. The utility said a big new investment in renewables reflects local reaction to President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement and the 100 percent renewables resolutions passed by Portland and Multnomah County. PGE made the point in final written arguments Friday to state regulators on a proposed… ...

PGE’s new challenge: Opposition to big renewable energy buy

After being hammered for months for entertaining the possibility of new natural gas-fired plants — and then putting that on hold— Portland General Electric is now facing opposition to its plan to spend nearly $1 billion on renewable energy in the next few years. Staff at the Oregon Public Utility Commission came down firmly against PGE’s renewable energy ambitions in final comments filed Friday on the utility’s integrated resource plan, calling the plan risky and unnecessary given that PGE… ...

PGE defends plans, trims estimate of new power needs

Portland General Electric is defending a resource plan that critics have suggested is a veiled bid to build and own another natural-gas-fired generating plant. At the same time, in a 181-page document filed with the Oregon Public Utility Commission Friday, the company stepped back from its plan in one potentially significant respect, reducing its projected capacity deficit for 2021 from 819 megawatts to 696 megawatts. Both PUC staff and industrial power users had questioned the original figure....

PGE refrain: We're not determined to build a natural gas plant

If you’ve been following our coverage, you know Portland General Electric is catching grief from environmentalists over its proposal to build a new natural gas power plant. Oops, we should say “proposal," because in PGE’s view, it’s no sure thing, no matter what the environmentalists believe. The difference in opinion between the utility and its critics is just one component of the controversy over PGE’s integrated resource plan, now before the Oregon Public Utility Commission. But it’s…
