5 theories on why Pete Buttigieg got so popular.

It's a crowded field of Democratic Party candidates, with notables like Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris idling at around 7% and Cory Booker embarrassingly stalled at 3%. So how did Pete Buttigieg break through the pack into 3rd place already? (Only Biden and Sanders outpoll the fast-rising newcomer.)Amber Phillips (at WaPo) has 5 theories, which I'll summarize, interwoven with my commentary.1. He's a "novelty," Phillips says, because he "is from the Midwest, he’s a veteran who served in Afgha...

‘Mystery surcharge’ boosts California gas taxes to $1.26 per gallon

With Southern California gas prices topping $4 for the first time since 2015, many have been quick to place the blame on refinery problems and a switch to the summer blend of gas. Here’s a breakdown of what we pay in gasoline taxes, according to the California Energy Commission. All numbers except the fin...

Chargers free-agency review: Tracking arrivals and departures

A month removed since the start of NFL free agency, Chargers coach Anthony Lynn doesn’t believe his team improved from the one that won 12 games and advanced to the divisional round of the playoffs. “I don’t think you can say right now this team is better than at the end of the last season,” Lynn said last month at the annual NFL meetings. “The 2018 season is entirely different than the upcoming year.” As Lynn pointed out, every season is different. Players improve, players decline. Injuries and...

Fight Gun Control With Our Own Emotional Stories

Opinion Fight Gun Control With Our Own Emotional Stories United States – -(AmmoLand.com)- When we discussed the “civil society” gambit to ban modern multi-purpose semi-automatic firearms, we noted that it was being used to set up a one-two combination to get people to not look at the facts surrounding these firearms. The first part of that combination was massive amounts of emotional manipulation. For instance, Kamala Harris used the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting as pa...

'Joker' director says online chatter about his twisted origin movie hasn't been accurate, and shares first trailer that evokes 'Taxi Driver'

The first teaser of "Joker" went online Wednesday and it has a twisted "Taxi Driver"-like feel. The movie stars Joaquin Phoenix as the legendary DC Comics villain and is directed by Todd Phillips ("The Hangover" movies). Phillips told the audience of theaters owners and press at CinemaCon on Tuesday night in Las Vegas, where the footage was first shown, that most of the stuff about the movie that's been written online is not accurate.
