Want the Wild to rebuild and start over? It's harder -- and riskier -- than you might think

The Wild will have a week off for the All-Star break starting Thursday and will arrive at the unofficial midpoint (50 games played is not half of 82) in a familiar position. The Wild is very much in the mix for a playoff spot — a little better than a coin flip, depending on where you look at probabilities — but Minnesota clearly isn't one of the NHL's very best teams. Top 16? Possibly. Top five? No chance. This middle ground has defined much of the last seven seasons (counting this one) since th...

Coyotes Weekly: Still Hanging Around

Don’t look now, but the injury-ravaged Arizona Coyotes, written off by many after losing no fewer than five key players to long-term ailments this season, are just two points out of a playoff spot after a 6-2-2 start to January. With a nine-day break coming up, it’s not inconceivable to think that this is a team that’s capable of getting healthy and going on a big second-half run to earn its first playoff berth since the 2011-12 season. Coyotes Week in Review After getting blown out 7-1 in Cal...

ADL Report: Right-Wingers Committed Every 2018 Extremist Murder In US

The Anti-Defamation League’s annual report on extremist killings in the United States, released Wednesday, found that individuals linked to right-wing extremist movements committed every single extremist-related murder in the country in 2018. Right-wing extremists killed 50 people last year, mostly with firearms, making them responsible for more deaths than in any year since 1995, according to the ADL’s data. The report focuses on incidents like the February mass school shooting in Parkland, ...

Social Media: Open This Pandora’s Box At Your Risk

It is now universally accepted that social media is an addiction more harmful than cigarettes, alcohol, and hard drug. Unfortunately, this addiction has gripped kids, young blood, and adults in its tentacles. The entire gamut of social networks works as sugar-coated poison. Users feel elated in the beginning. Then, slowly and gradually, they’ll succumb to the temptation until they find themselves consumed by this ogre. This article aims to show you the bad side of social media. And for this purp...

Speed Sights: Diamonds are a Shooter’s Best Friend

Speed Sights can be easily seen during the day. U.S.A. –-(Ammoland.com)- It is not often that I take the time as a writer to review a set of pistol sights. When I write reviews of handguns I will often point out the advantages or drawbacks of the factory sights. Of course, when building a pistol from the ground-up I will mention why a particular set of sights were chosen. However, I came across a new set by a company called Speed Sights that was a bit different than what is out there. More so...

New Music: Lou The Human “Make You Sick”

Lou the Human, the scrappy young rapper from Staten Island, has kept up a steady stream of new music since dropping his debut project Humaniac! back in October 2017. Songs like “Play Your Part” and “Speak of the Devil” delivered more of the delinquent raps that made Danny Brown and J.I.D into Lou fans. Meanwhile, last year’s “Empty Bottle” showcased a spacier, more emo-influenced side to his sound, which isn’t surprising considering he was bumping “a lot of sad rock” as a kid before he got i...

Moen Moan, Part Duex

–James Mahoney, Razor’s Edge Communications Back in the ’70s, National Geographic ran a story on Boston firefighters. The writer mentioned a barb that a fireman tossed his way. “Ya gonna do another silver jets piece, huh?” Adding sarcastically, “Ya know: silver jets of water piercing the dark sky as they bravely battle the inferno…” I owe that firefighter a debt. Since I read his diss, Silver Jets has been a mental caution sign against veering too far into the preciously romantic. (Well, most of...

What the F*&@ Happened to All These Airlines?

I haven’t done an Ask Cranky post in awhile, and this one seemed like fun. Hi Brett,I was looking through the archive of “Who the F” articles you’ve written through the years, and I think it would be cool to see a follow up on each of the 19 airlines you’ve covered. Some have taken off and become extremely successful like Allegiant, and some are PeoplExpress. I’d love to read a where-are-they-now? Thanks! Great idea. I have looked at all the airlines in the Who the F*[email protected] serie...

4 Questions the Penguins Will Face After the All-Star Break

The Pittsburgh Penguins will head into the 2019 All-Star break with a 26-16-6 record, good for 58 points and fourth place in a tight Metropolitan Division. The team is holding on to the second wild-card spot for dear life despite having the fourth-best goal differential in the Eastern Conference. There’s still plenty of reason to be optimistic about the Penguins though, especially for a team that was tied for the fewest points in the East on Nov. 20. Pittsburgh is home to multiple all-time...

Student vs. Teacher: Capel, Pitt set for Coach K, No. 2 Duke

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jeff Capel needed a landing spot, a place to recharge and re-evaluate after getting fired by Oklahoma in 2011. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski came to his former point guard with a simple offer. Come home, Krzyzewski told Capel. We’ll figure something out. “It worked out pretty well, too,” Krzyzewski said. Rams’ Super Bowl opponent: The dynastic New England Patriots

SUPER BOWL LIII Rams (15-3) vs. New England Patriots (13-5) Date: Sunday, Feb. 3, 3:30 p.m., CBS/2 Last meeting: In then-coach Jeff Fisher’s penultimate game, the Rams played in chilly New England on Dec. 4, 2016, and had a fairly dismal showing in a 26-10 loss. Coincidentally, that game took place one week after the Rams suffered a blowout loss at New Orleans. The Patriots probably can’t take much from that game, because the Rams clearly were headed nowhere. The Patriots led 17-0 at halftime an...

Famed Louis Kahn-Designed Concert Boat Retires To Florida

It was designed by Kahn for the 1976 Bicentennial and lived in Pittsburgh. But it’s been in disrepair for years and its elderly owner has been trying to unload it. In 2017, cellist Yo Yo Ma wrote an impassioned plea to save it, and the challenge was picked up by Pahokee, an economically-depressed small town in Florida, which plans to restore it and use it as an attraction. – Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Blues’ Perron Proving to be Perfect Signing

With no disrespect to David Perron, the news that the winger had signed once again with the St. Louis Blues last summer was met with mixed reactions. Very few were excited. Many were indifferent. Some were disgusted. After a disappointing 2017-18 season in which the Blues missed the playoffs for the first time in over half a decade, the team’s decision to turn yet again to Perron, who had departed to the Vegas Golden Knights in the expansion draft a year prior, was simply not the impact mo...

NEWARK, N.J. — One streak ended Thursday and another began Saturday. The Ducks defeated the New Jersey Devils 3-2 on Saturday at the Prudential Center for their second consecutive victory after ending a franchise-record 12-game losing streak two days earlier. The Ducks took a 2-1 lead in the first period on goals 2:20 apart from Daniel Sprong and Troy Terry (power play). Sprong pounced on a loose puck in front and scored and then Terry scored his first NHL goal with a shot from the right faceoff...

Charges of anti-Semitism against its leaders aren't keeping Rachel Sklar away from the Women's March. After Charlottesville and Pittsburgh, she says she's motivated to show up "louder, stronger, and angrier to fight for the kind of world I want to live in" - no matter what the leadership says or does.
