'Samsung's One UI Is the Best Software It's Ever Put On a Smartphone'

In preparation for the Galaxy S10 launch event tomorrow, The Verge's Dieter Bohn writes about the new "One UI" software that will run on these new phones. After testing the software on a Galaxy S9 for the past week, Bohn says he really likes it, adding that it's better in some ways than the software found on Google's Pixel 3. "If it weren't for the fact that I don't yet trust Samsung to deliver major software updates quickly, I would be shouting about One UI from the rooftops," writes Bohn. "As ...

Google is working on a cheaper new smartphone that could rival the iPhone XR, report says

Google is working on a new low-cost smartphone that would be less expensive than the $749 iPhone XR, according to a new report. It's said to be part of an effort to lure new users into Google's software and services ecosystem. The launch would come as Apple grapples with slowing iPhone sales.  When Google launched its first Pixel phone in 2016, it was largely perceived as being the search giant's first premium-grade smartphone that put the company in direct competition with Apple's iPhones. How to take a screenshot on a Google Pixel 2 or 3, including alternate methods

Taking a screenshot on a Google Pixel 2 or 3 is simple and consists of pushing the power and down volume keys simultaneously. There are also alternate ways to take a screenshot for those with a damaged phone. Screenshots can be immediately accessed in the top toolbar, but are also stored in the photos file for later viewings.   Like any new device, Google's phones come with a bit of a learning curve, especially for those who are switching from another type of phone, like an iPhone or Android...

Android’s Real Security Problem is the Manufacturers

Cameron Summerson If you’re running a Google Pixel handset, your phone is safe from a security hole that could let a PNG file completely wreck the system. If you’re using nearly any other Android handset, then your phone is vulnerable. This is a problem. Google recently released the February security update for Pixel devices, which closes a hole that would allow malicious PNG files to “execute arbitrary code within the context of a privileged process.” In simpler terms, the code can run at...

Auto populate custom columns on import.

Usually when I import a file to calibre (as opposed to via plugin, like fanficfare) it's something I haven't read, and is a completed work. This I mark with a no in my #read column, and a yes in the #status column. Is there a way to tell calibre these should be the default? Will it futz up Fanficfare's use of those columns? Should I get the corned beef or pastrami? Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk

February 2019 Android security update arrives for Pixel phones, now lets you pause download, schedule reboot

Google has started rolling out new over-the-air (OTA) update for Pixel devices and also posted factory images as part of monthly Android Security release. Everyone keeps hyping the cameras on Huawei's smartphones, so I tested up one of its top models against the best smartphone camera we've tried so far

I've received several requests to compare Huawei's smartphones against other phones from companies I typically cover, so I finally got a Huawei smartphone to see what all the fuss is about. I tried out the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, and guess what. It's quite good! But it's not as good as all the hype claims it is.  When comparing the cameras on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and the best-in-class Pixel 3 from Google, I found myself confused as to how I should take photos with the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. Google's cheaper Pixel 3 'Lite' is totally leaked in a new video and comes with one of the most important features from the $800 Pixel 3 (GOOG, GOOGL)

A new video supposedly shows off the new Pixel 3 Lite mid-range smartphone from Google.  The Pixel 3 Lite is said to be a cheaper version of the regular Pixel 3 phones that Google released in October last year.  One of the biggest features on the Pixel 3 Lite is the same camera as the regular Pixel 3, which is often touted as having the best camera on any smartphone.  If the Pixel 3 Lite exists, it appears to be completely, totally, and utterly leaked in a new video from YouTube channel Andro...

Leak: The Pixel 3 ‘Lite’ brings back the headphone jack and keeps the camera

We’ve been hearing rumblings of a midrange Pixel 3 ‘Lite’ for a few months now, but a new leak by Andro News seems to all but confirm the phone is on the way – and it’s already looking interesting enough for me to want one. The video gives a rather thorough preview of the pre-production phone’s design and features. Spec-wise, the leaker corroborates earlier reports of a midrange Snapdragon 670 and 32GB of storage, but there’s also a 5.6-inch FHD+ display and 4GB of RAM. It’s also worth noting Go...

Google’s Pixel 3 Lite could bring back the headphone jack

Word about the next member of the Pixel family started leaking out just after Christmas. Now the rumored Pixel 3 Lite is getting some more time to shine, courtesy of a three minute YouTube video that highlights what appears to be a budget addition to Google’s flagship hardware line. Perhaps most interesting here (aside from the mere existence of a third Pixel 3 model) is the apparent return of the headphone jack. After making a stink about including the port on the first Pixel, the company q...

I'm seriously doubting the Google Pixel 3's dominance as the best smartphone camera after taking it on vacation

I took two smartphones with me on a trip to Hawaii, and I ended up happier with the cheaper phone's photos. The $800 Google Pixel 3 is often crowned as the best smartphone camera, but I found the OnePlus 6T that starts at $550 took better photos.  The following is mostly my own personal opinion, so it's fine if you prefer the Pixel 3's photos. I recently went on a trip to Hawaii and thought it'd be the perfect place to take some photos with two different smartphones I brought with me.  The ph...

Shocker: The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Is Faster Than the 845

The first benchmark tests are out for the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chip, and unsurprisingly it’s faster than last year’s 845. At least this gives us some insight into what to expect in the 2019 Android flagship phones. Of course, we have to give the obligatory benchmarks aren’t indicators of real-world performance talk here, because, well, benchmarks aren’t indicators of real-world performance. They’re a simple way to quantify and compare chipset performance by raw numbers and shouldn’t...

Google Assistant lock screen access is coming to more Android devices

Here’s a quick tidbit buried beneath today’s deluge of Google Assistant news (not to mention the bizarre waking nightmare that is the CES Small World ride). The company announced today that the smart assistant will be accessible on more Android phone lock screens. The feature was first announced back at Google’s hardware event in October, though, at the time, it was limited to the company’s new Pixel 3 handset.
