Happy Thanksgiving 2021

Here is my annual Thanksgiving blog, which I've published before. Enjoy! Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays and for the last seven years I have published this French Thanksgiving vocabulary list, courtesy of my former New York French teacher, Luc Georges. Since Thanksgiving is not an official holiday in France, many ex-pats postpone their Thanksgiving dinner for Friday or Saturday, but some are traditionalists and make it on Thursday. I will be going to a friend's house Saturd...

Visiting The Grand Seiko Boutique in Paris (Video)

Quick Look: Chanel Coco Clock

This recently popped up on one of my feeds and quite frankly, I was intrigued. Mind you, Chanel isn’t a brand that’s on my radar, and even though I was aware of their accomplishments in the watchmaking world, Chanel to me were handbags and perfumes, with the occasional lipstick thrown in the mix. Now, dear readers, before your thumbs start tapping and drawing out the pitchfork emoticon, hear me out. Or rather, keep scrolling.   I still remember quite fondly the time my colleague and I visited t...

Christmas in Paris 2019: Place Vendome

Sometimes the simplest things are the most beautiful. On Place Vendome there are towering, green trees in twos with large white bulbs on them in the central plaza, and a smaller version of the tree accentuate the doors. It was raining when I was there last week and the glistening, wet pavement extended the reflection of the trees beautifully. I also took some great shots of the Louis Vuitton boutique with the striking sculpture which has extended brass spokes shooting out of it. I used black ...

FIAC outdoors ... in the rain

FIAC stands for “Foire Internationale d’Art Contemporain” (International Contemporary Art Fair). It has been occurring on a yearly basis since 1974 and lasts only some three days. The main exhibition takes of course place indoors, in the Grand Palais, but there is also a lot to be seen in some temporary tents along the Champs Elysées. Part of the “show” takes place outdoors - here first a few things which you could find between the Grand and the Petit Palais. So… I m...

French government holds crisis talks after 'yellow vest' rioters wreak destruction in Paris

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe holds talks with party leaders on Monday as Paris scrambles to forge a response to violence by anti-government protesters that has left hundreds injured nationwide and caused widespread destruction around the capital. The talks follow a crisis meeting chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday as he surveyed the damage from a day of riots across Paris that saw violence "on a level not seen in decades." Philippe has been asked to meet protest orga...

How to Plan a Day Trip from London to Paris

A day trip to Paris from London is the perfect addition to a trip to England! Thanks to the fast and efficient Eurostar train, it’s never been easier to visit Paris for a day. Honestly, one day isn’t enough for Paris — ideally, you should spend as much time there as you can. But not everyone has lots of extra time to spend. So is it worth it if you only have one day to spare? Absolutely — a day trip to Paris is always worth it. Even if all you have is one day, you can still make it the best day...

Three charged with Ritz jewellery heist: judicial source

Three men were charged and detained Saturday over an audacious jewellery heist at the Ritz hotel in Paris this week, while two other suspects were still on the loose, a judicial source said. The men from the Paris region who are in their 30s and are known to police, were arrested after becoming trapped by locked doors as they tried to flee the five-star hotel. The robbery on Wednesday evening saw a gang armed with hatchets and handguns burst into the hotel on the capital's glitzy Place Vendome...

French police hunt two men after Ritz jewellery heist

French police said Thursday they had recovered some of the jewels worth millions of euros looted from the Ritz hotel in Paris, but a manhunt continues for two of the robbers behind the latest in a series of daring heists in France. The armed gang burst into the five-star hotel on the French capital's glitzy Place Vendome through a rear staff entrance on Wednesday evening and smashed the display windows of jewellery shops on the ground floor. Part of the loot was recovered after being scattered...

Hors les Murs 2017 at FIAC

Hors les Murs, an extension of the FIAC art fair, is a series of art pieces and sculptures exhibited in the Tuileries, Place Vendome and this year also in the garden of the Delacroix Museum in Saint Germain. I’ve been documenting the series each year since 2013 and have done so again this year. It seems as though each year there’s a controversial art piece, which garners violent reactions and hate mail on social media, to the point that either the artist or the fair has removed the piece. ...

Place Vendôme again - some "details"...

I have already made a number of posts on the beautiful Place Vendôme , but maybe it’s worth having a closer look on some “details”? The major architect of the place, Jules Hardouin-Mansart, was the grand-nephew of Jacques Mansart, who gave the name to the “mansard roofs”, here with a mixture of oval and rectangular windows. The design of the street lamps is already worth some closer looks….  … as well as the differently decorated pediments. Ther...

The inauguration didn't take place...

Just behind the early 18th century facade of one corner of Place Vendôme, at no. 7, things have changed. The buildings were refashioned around 1930-31. The premises were prepared for the opening of a bank office, “Banque de Suède et de Paris”, created by a Swede, Ivar Krueger, born in 1880. The opening of the new bank office was planned for March 13, 1932, but the day before, Ivar Krueger died, most probably by suicide. Through the large windows, we can see some decorated walls... ...

The Vendôme Column

I already posted about the “Vendôme Column” a number of times, e.g. here, here and here…  and I told how the Napoleon statue has been replaced, that the column has been torn down, re-erected…  In my latest post I said that the column was under renovation. Now, since a couple of months it looks like “new”. I thought it was worth showing some details again. Let’s read the inscription on the base of the column in approximate translation: “Napoleon, the august emperor, has dedicat...

Ugo Rondinone Sculptures on Place Vendome

I wrote about the outdoor art installations in the Tuileries and Place Vendome as part of the FIAC Art Fair last week. I shot some additional photos of Ugo Rondinone’s sculpture installation "Everytime the Sun Comes Up," on Place Vendome which I didn’t post the other day. One side of the installation consists of five white aluminum trees five meters each based on 1,000 year old olive trees.  Maybe because it’s close to Halloween but I love the way the branches seem like ghosts overhanging...

A cautionary tale from the history of NGOs

The contemporary world features more than twenty thousand international NGOs in almost every field of human activity, including humanitarian assistance, environmental protection, human rights promotion, and technical standardization, amongst numerous other issues. These organizations include household names such as Amnesty International, Greenpeace, and Doctors Without Borders, as well as less well known but sizeable institutions such as the International Cooperative Alliance which claims to rep...

Place Vendome

There are fewer more luxurious places in Paris besides Place Vendome. I think you need to dress up even if you are just walking through it. I was on a luxury high after visiting The Ritz Paris last month and strolled around the perimeter to fixate on the brightly blazing baubles at Cartier, Van Cleef and Arpels, Graff, and Boucheron. Above the shops I noticed the elegant awnings with the crisp lettering along the intricate ironwork above them. I also observed that each one also had a differ...
