MoMA’s Art Treasure, No Longer Buried

The riches of the collection extend to its inaugural exhibitions. Give the curators an A+ for effort — and wait. This is just the beginning.

Dodgers were let down by offense when it mattered most – again

LOS ANGELES — It happens every fall. The Dodgers’ offense has been on an undeniable four-year upswing. Each year from 2016 through 2019, they have scored more runs than the year before, hit more home runs and raised the team OPS to the point that they have led the National League in each of those three categories each of the past two regular seasons. This year, in particular, the Dodgers were confident their team-wide offense had improved in critical areas. The team average with runners in scori...

Will the Dodgers’ 2020 roster look much different from the 2019 version?

LOS ANGELES — The sudden shock of elimination in the National League Division Series will lead to calls for massive changes. The Dodgers will be linked with big-name free agents – as they annually are, regardless – such as Gerrit Cole and Anthony Rendon. But the truth is the Dodgers’ 2020 roster will probably look a lot like their 2019 roster. Here’s a rundown of where everyone stands heading into an earlier-than-expected winter: Player ————————— 2019 salary ————————— 2020 status (salary) LHP ...

Analysis: Now what? Dodgers’ NLDS failure leads to blame game and a winter of questions

LOS ANGELES — Now what? Reddened eyes and hunched shoulders filled the Dodgers’ clubhouse last night as the shock of losing to the Washington Nationals began to sink in. The awareness of just how badly the Dodgers had misjudged their destiny this fall might take longer to process. “I’ll let you know when I process it,” infielder Max Muncy said when asked how long it would take to absorb the disappointment. Clayton Kershaw, playing the noble warrior and trying to lay claim to all the blame for hi...

The Real Test Of MoMA’s Expansion Will Be Traffic Flow: Justin Davidson

“MoMA is a machine for viewing art, and the success of this latest incarnation will be gauged by how many visitors the facility can process in any given day. … The 2004 expansion created escalator bottlenecks, Pollock and Picasso choke points, and the slightly desperate atmosphere of a shopping mall on Black Friday morn. This time, the architects … calculated [everything] to smooth the passage of humanity.” – New York Magazine

“I had an idea how the day would pan out but I went anyway” – a match report

Send your match reports to [email protected] If it’s a professional match, on no account mention the cricket itself. If it’s an amateur match, feel free to go into excruciating detail. Edwardian went to Cambridge MCCU versus Worcestershire CCC at Fenner’s back in April. Edwardian writes… I had an idea how the day would pan out but I went anyway. I hadn’t been able to get to any of the county fixtures at Fenner’s so I decided to go, expecting to leave at lunch...

NLDS Game 5: Dodgers vs. Nationals pitching matchup

When Stephen Strasburg started Game 2 of the National League Division Series, the Dodgers never looked more feeble. Strasburg allowed one run in six innings and struck out 10 batters in the Nationals’ 4-2 win. Walker Buehler delivered the best performance by a Dodgers starting pitcher in the series, hurling six shutout innings in Game 1. Now, the two right-handers will square off in Wednesday’s Game 5 with the season on the line for both teams. Expect the Dodgers to use a different lineup after ...

Inside the Dodgers: The predictability of unpredictability: embracing the Magic Eye strategy

Editor’s note: This is the Oct. 8, 2019 edition of the Inside the Dodgers newsletter. To receive the newsletter in your inbox, sign up here. Andrew Friedman, the Dodgers’ president of baseball operations, has a reputation for placing predictability at the cornerstone of his roster-building strategy. This is why he rarely spends top dollar on relief pitchers; as a lot, they are the most volatile of baseball players. Once a manager goes to his bullpen, ESPN’s Sam Miller once wrote, “is when baseba...

A.J. Pollock’s ‘bad three games’ land him on Dodgers’ bench for Game 4

WASHINGTON — Taken individually, A.J. Pollock’s at-bats in the first three games of the Dodgers’ National League Division Series were not pretty. Added together, it gets even uglier. Pollock was 0 for 11 in the first three games with nine strikeouts. Not surprisingly, the veteran outfielder was not in the starting lineup for Game 4, replaced by left-handed hitter Matt Beaty against Nationals starter Max Scherzer on Monday night. “I think right now he’s struggling with spin,” Dodgers manager Dave...

NLDS Game 2: Dodgers vs. Nationals pitching matchups

LOS ANGELES — Clayton Kershaw and Stephen Strasburg have combined to start 557 games this decade, all for the Dodgers and Nationals, respectively. Game 2 of the National League Division Series on Friday will be only the second time they have ever started against each other. Kershaw was chosen to start over Hyun-Jin Ryu by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, partly to leave Kershaw available out of the Dodgers’ bullpen in an if-necessary Game 5. Strasburg’s pitch count will not be restricted, even thou...

Whicker: Dodgers look comfortable upon returning to the big stage

LOS ANGELES — If the Dodgers were a theatrical troupe, as they have been in the past, the regular season was New Haven. This was Broadway. They pretty much knew they were in the postseason by Mother’s Day. They showed admirable intent by going ahead and winning 106 games, but in their minds, it was all positioning, all a bunch of nightly rehearsals leading up to Thursday night and what happens beyond. And, in this arena, you never tell anybody to break a leg. So Opening Night was a success, as f...

Abstract Expressionist Painter Mary Abbott Dead At 98

“[She] painted bold, colorful works, often inspired by nature or music, and traveled in the same circles as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and other artists who were redefining painting in the years after World War II. … [But her] vivid description [of Pollock] conveys what women trying to make a name for themselves in that world were facing.” – The New York Times

Alexander: Alex Verdugo raises Dodgers’ excitement level

LOS ANGELES — Those Dodger fans still unhappy over the trade of a fan favorite last winter should snap out of their funk. You want energy and enthusiasm to go with performance? You can do much worse than to latch on to Alex Verdugo, who has grabbed a spot in the Dodgers’ lineup and has no intention of letting go. Verdugo was not in the batting order Thursday night against Washington, but Manager Dave Roberts characterized it as just a day off. That in itself is progress because it means he’ll be...

Conviction, execution – Dodgers still waiting for Joe Kelly to work things out

LOS ANGELES — If Joe Kelly knows why his first season with the Dodgers has started out so poorly, he doesn’t sound very certain of it. “It’s probably not one thing,” the Dodgers reliever said. “I just have to go out there and just compete. That’s what I’m looking forward to doing. “I’m not disappointed. I’m frustrated. It’s life. (Stuff) happens. It’s happened to me before. I could pitch crappy and just have fortunate luck. … I don’t feel like I’m getting knocked around the yard. I just feel lik...

Dodgers’ Ross Stripling, who tipped all his pitches last year, believes he is a mystery again

LOS ANGELES — Ross Stripling began chewing gum on the mound, appropriately, when the Dodgers visited Wrigley Field on April 25. He allowed two hits in the first inning that afternoon, but the Cubs didn’t score. He gave up two more hits without consequence in the second inning. By the third inning, Stripling decided he’d had enough. “I had to spit it out because literally, I couldn’t breathe normal for whatever reason,” he said. “I’d be like” – Stripling paused to make an exaggerated panting soun...

A.J. Pollock’s recovery delayed by staph infection, not elbow procedure

LOS ANGELES — A.J. Pollock won’t play for the Dodgers until June, and perhaps not until July. The extent of his absence has little to do with his right elbow, but for all practical purposes his story begins there. It’s a story he finally had a chance to tell Monday, when the Dodgers returned home for a nine-game homestand. On April 25 in Chicago, Pollock was removed after playing eight innings against the Cubs. He wasn’t hurt as far as he could tell. Back in the visitors’ clubhouse, Pollock said...

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dodgers outfielder A.J. Pollock will be out for at least six weeks after undergoing surgery to clear up an infection in his right elbow. Dodgers acquire catcher Travis d’Arnaud to add a right-handed bat

SAN DIEGO –The Dodgers search for a right-handed bat in the wake of A.J. Pollock’s injury led them to an unexpected place – catcher. Travis d’Arnaud was signed and joined the Dodgers at Petco Park Sunday. Matt Beaty – done in by being left-handed – was sent back to Triple-A after going 2 for 3 as a pinch-hitter in his first taste of the big leagues. D’Arnaud was released by the New York Mets earlier this week after being designated for assignment. He signed a $3.515 million contract with the Met...

Reds release former Dodgers All-Star Matt Kemp

CINCINNATI  — The Reds have released injured outfielder Matt Kemp just over four months after acquiring the 2018 All-Star from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Cincinnati announced the move Saturday. Kemp hit .200 with one homer and five RBIs before Cincinnati placed him on the injured list April 23 with a broken left rib. Kemp was injured colliding with an outfield wall in San Diego. The 34-year-old was among four players acquired from Los Angeles in a seven-player trade in December along with outfield...

Whicker: Dodgers look like they’ve been there before

SAN DIEGO — “I didn’t see any panic,” Dave Roberts said. Not even when he saw Cody Bellinger crouched near first base, after he had dived unsuccessfully. Not even when Roberts learned that Bellinger’s right shoulder had somehow come loose from the rest of him, and then re-entered wherever it was supposed to be. “We did some strength testing with him, he took a few swings in the cage,” Roberts said. “I think he’ll be fine. But his shoulder popped out. That’s happened with him before.” The Dodgers...

Dodgers’ A.J. Pollock ‘resting and recovering’ after surgery with no timeline for return yet

SAN DIEGO — Whatever expectations the Dodgers have for A.J. Pollock’s return to action, they are keeping them to themselves. Pollock underwent surgery Thursday to remove a plate and screws from his right elbow, hardware that was inserted after he fractured his elbow in 2016. Pollock is home “resting and recovering,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said, and still taking antibiotics to treat a bacterial infection in the bursa sac in that elbow. How long Pollock will need to rest and recover before h...

Tested over time, Pedro Baez remains a constant in Dodgers bullpen

SAN FRANCISCO — He has been the Dodgers reliever you loved to hate. But maybe he could be the Dodgers reliever you hate to love. Over the past five seasons, relievers have come (most recently Joe Kelly) and gone (Joe Blanton, Brandon Morrow, et al) as the Dodgers searched for a reliable setup man to serve as closer Kenley Jansen’s opening act. In that time, Pedro Baez has pitched in more high-leverage situations (289 plate appearances over 123 games) than every Dodgers reliever other than Jansen...

Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger named NL Player of Month for his historic April

After having one of the best opening months in MLB history, Cody Bellinger was named the National League Player of the Month for April. The Dodgers outfielder-first baseman matched the record for home runs before May 1 (14) and set a new standard for RBIs (37) and total bases (97) while finishing April as the major-league leader in nearly every offensive category. Bellinger reached base safely in 30 of his first 31 games and finished April leading the majors in batting average (.431), on-base pe...

Dodgers’ A.J. Pollock will have surgery on elbow, out indefinitely

SAN FRANCISCO — Dodgers outfielder A.J. Pollock will have surgery on his right elbow on Thursday and be sidelined indefinitely. An examination Tuesday found that the bursa sac in his elbow was the site of the bacterial infection Pollock has been dealing with since last week. But the hardware from his 2016 injury is no longer needed and will be removed during the procedure. “The reason they’re taking out the hardware where at times you just leave it in if it doesn’t bother the athlete – with the ...
