Bill Barr Promised to Release Prisoners Threatened by Coronavirus — Even as the Feds Secretly Made It Harder for Them to Get Out

This story first appeared at ProPublica. ProPublica is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative newsroom. Sign up for The Big Story newsletter to receive stories like this one in your inbox. Even as the Justice Department announced that federal prisons would release vulnerable, nonviolent inmates to home confinement to avoid the spread of COVID-19, the agency was quietly adopting a policy that makes it harder for inmates to qualify for release, not easier. The result has been that more than 98% ...

CDC, states’ reporting of virus test data causes confusion

By MICHELLE R. SMITH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Elected officials, businesses and others are depending on coronavirus testing and infection-rate data as states reopen so that they will know if a second wave of contagion is coming — and whether another round of stay-at-home orders or closings might be needed. But states are reporting those figures in different ways, and that can lead to frustration and confusion about what the numbers mean. In some places, there have been data gaps that leave local ...

Patti Smith’s Self Portraits: Another Side of the Prolific Artist

Young artists can understandably feel hesitant about trying new things. It’s hard enough to compete as a musician, for example. Why try to publish poetry or make visual art, too? Older, more established artists who branch out often have trouble being taken seriously in other fields. Patti Smith—poet, singer, memoirist, photographer, visual artist—has never seemed to suffer in either regard. “Her artwork has been exhibited everywhere from New York to Munich,” notes Dangerous Minds, “and in 2008 ...

7 best places for fish and chips in the San Fernando Valley

Recently, Uber Eats — one of the delivery services keeping us fed during this ongoing global disruption of our lives — recently revealed the dishes that are the most requested by their customers. Turns out, the chow at the very top isn’t fried chicken, pizza, sushi or tasty barbecue — though all did well, along with pad Thai noodles, chicken tikka masala and Buffalo wings. The top desire of those of us binge-watching “Ozark” is…french fries. Which comes as a surprise to me. Because, as satisfyin...

About 10% of Southern California tenants failed to pay April rent

Tustin resident Maria Henry contacted her landlord when her work hours got cut to four hours per day because of the coronavirus outbreak. Could she pay just two-thirds of her $2,020 rent until her next paycheck arrived? At management’s request, she filled out the company’s “COVID-19 financial hardship form” and submitted a letter from her employer confirming she “had her regular work hours cut in half effective March 19th.” She paid her first installment on time but didn’t pay the final $620 unt...

Pollock’s Guest Appearance in the Metropolitan Museum’s Subdued 150th-Birthday Video

If you’ve already seen the Max-&-Dan video that the Met posted today to mark this unexpectedly somber occasion, you may have wondered about the identity of the head peering over Director Max Hollein‘s left shoulder. – Lee Rosenbaum

Why The Economy Is Unlikely To Recover As Quickly As It Collapsed

BALTIMORE (AP) — President Donald Trump has been telling voters that the U.S. economy will leap back to life “like a rocket,” stronger than ever after its bout with the coronavirus. But there is a reason economics is called the “dismal science.” There are emerging signs that any recovery will fail to match the speed and severity of the economic collapse that occurred in just a few weeks. The 2020 presidential and Senate elections likely will take place as the world’s largest economy is still att...

Who is Test cricket’s greatest number eight? (Or: Which Test bowler was the best batsman?)

Specialist bowlers having to bat is one of the greatest things in the world because batting is absolutely nothing like bowling. It is like a javelin thrower training for years and years to perfect their art only to turn up at the Olympics and be told that they also have to play tennis. This is precisely why it’s interesting to ponder which bowler has been best at batting. We often talk about the top six in cricket. Whether or not these players do other things as well, the top six batsmen ar...

Ottawa Senators: State of the Franchise

As the fate of the NHL season hangs in the balance due to the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is now time to evaluate the Ottawa Senators organization. When the season was “paused” on March 13, the Sens had a record of 25-34-12 through 71 games. This had them on pace for 72 points, and second-to-last place in the league. While the team was once again mediocre on the ice, certain positives were put on display. In a season that has mostly been terrible, there is a light at the end of the tunne...

With no in-person service, LA-area Catholics will rely on media for their Mass

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles took the unprecedented measure this week of suspending all public Masses amid the deadly COVID-19 threat that has swept the globe. The Diocese of San Bernardino, which includes Riverside and San Bernardino counties,  and the Diocese of Orange made similar announcements. “This is the first time that there’s been an Archdiocese-wide suspension of Masses,” said Adrian Alarcon, director of media relations at the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. “There was a plague in L.A. i...

Mexican Muralists Changed the Course of 20th-Century American Art. A New Exhibit Explores Their Influence

Jackson Pollock’s best-known influences include European greats like Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró. But often overlooked is the artist’s time at New York’s Experimental Workshop, founded in 1936 by David Alfaro Siqueiros, who along with Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco made up “los tres grandes” who led the postrevolution Mexican muralism movement. Siqueiros founded the Workshop in New York City in 1936, guided by the philosophy that in order to make truly radical art, artists must ...

Dodgers 2020 spring training preview: Did they find their difference-maker?

One of the biggest baseball trades in recent history – one of the biggest in Dodgers’ franchise history – finally became official Monday afternoon. How did the centerpiece of that deal react? “I was actually hitting in the cage when it became official,” said Mookie Betts, sporting a Dodgers jersey for the first time in a press conference at his new home stadium on Wednesday afternoon. “So I took a little break, put my phone inside and finished up business.” The Dodgers begin reporting to camp Th...

On a chilly late October evening outside the doors of the Eric Maclean Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of Loyola High School in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce (NDG), a line of people is starting to form. Others are carrying pieces of memorabilia crested with the famous logo of the Habs – magazines, banners, flags, even parts o...

Splatter master Jackson Pollock avoided “coiling” when creating his paintings (ars technica)

Enlarge / Jackson Pollock working in his Long Island studio adjacent to his home in 1949. (credit: Martha Holmes/The LIFE Picture Collection via Getty Image) Famed abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock notoriously relied on non-traditional painting techniques to create his masterpieces. Physicists have pondered the presence of curls and coils in his work, and whether the artist deliberately exploited a well-known fluid dynamics effect to achieve them. Now a recent paper in PLOS One is claimi...

Inside the Dodgers: What to make of the rumored interest in Francisco Lindor

Editor’s note: This is the Oct. 29 edition of the Inside the Dodgers newsletter. To receive the newsletter in your inbox, sign up here. Andrew Friedman has never faced an off-season roster puzzle quite like this one. His club won 106 games in the regular season, something no Dodgers team had ever done – certainly something no Tampa Bay Rays team had ever done. Game 5 of the NLDS was going well, too, until one Dave Roberts pitching change came too late for two fateful Clayton Kershaw pitches. Fri...

Please, just say it

There is no case that can be made biblically for a woman preacher. Period. Paragraph. End of discussion. • John MacArthur • • • Last week, John MacArthur celebrated 50 years in the pastorate at a conference at his congregation Grace Community Church. During the event, MacArthur accused the Southern Baptist Convention of taking a “headlong plunge” toward allowing women preachers after women spoke at the SBC’s 2019 annual meeting. That, he said, was a sign that the denomination no longer believe...
