King Kamehameha never had it so good: Have a Royal Hawaiian celebration without breaking the bank.

No doubt being the king of all the Islands had its perks—but not near the luxury and creature comforts available these days to us common folk.  And—here's the kicker—if you are planning an event for a group (say six to twelve people) you will be surprised at how affordable a luxury villa  or beachside enclave can be. For the per-person price that a couple pays for a pretty-nice condo or resort room, a group of ten or so can chill at a pad that could be a movie set.Of course, you can also spe...

Board Question #91175: Referring back to Board Question 63136 and answer: This issue ...

Q: Dear 100 Hour Board,Referring back to Board Question 63136 and answer:This issue has troubled me since 2001. Back then I spoke to my Bishop and Stake President about it. Neither had any answer and neither had ever even heard this was a thing. Not being satisfied I contacted the Hawaii Temple President who answered me by saying - "We found that if we don't serve coffee and tea after the luau people don't stay and buy dessert". That answer from the Temple President hurt my testimony so badly...

Spend a glamorous day at the 'Hollywood of Hawaii'

Kualoa Regional Park on Oahu's windward coast is next-door to the darling of Hawaii attractions, the Polynesian Cultural Center, and for that reason gets overlooked by most tourists. But locals are hip to this place, and so are Hollywood directors, who have shot dozens of movies here. The park's signature landmark is tiny Mokoli'i Island, which was known affectionately for a century as 'Chinaman's Hat,' since its profile is similar to the head gear worn by Chinese sugar cane workers who c...

Cruisin' Oahu's "other North Shore": A scenic drive that won't drive you crazy

If you seek where the action isn't, pick a weekday and head north on Oahu's Windward (eastern) coast. For much of the drive, sandy beaches are right out the windshield and the country road is wide open. At the southern end of the drive (i.e., going north from busy Kailua), the Byodo Temple in Valley of the Temples is a Zen-like respite under the jagged Ko'olau Pali (cliffs). Several beaches, like Kahalu'u Beach Park pictured above, await  a barefoot stroll. You may recognize Pu'u Ka...

Best Places to Camp on the Beach in Hawaii

You need a permit to camp on the beach, or anywhere else in Hawaii, and many of the sites will be more of a communal experience than a communion with Ma Nature.  Generally speaking, to find a more remote camping experience, you'll need to head to higher elevations or strap on a backpack and trek into the hinterlands. But there are exceptions. Here are the best places to pitch a tent at the beach in realative solitude, and still be near your car: OAHU: With a million-plus people, you wo...

5 Ways Travel Is Brain Healthy In Midlife

Vacations, we all need them, yet studies show that Americans don't make them a priority. In fact not only do we not make them a priority, in some cases we actually are known to throw away the vacation days we have accumulated out of fear. Two weeks ago I traveled to the beautiful island of Oahu in Hawaii with my dear friend Lois. As it happens Lois, like me, is a woman living her midlife differently than our parents or grandparents did. Each of us subscribe to the notion that you get one spin o...
