Vegan shoes from Insecta are a stylish option for eco-friendly footwear

Brazilian company Insecta is defying the stereotype that eco-friendly fashion can’t be stylish with its line of “ecosexy” vegan shoes. In addition to being completely void of animal-derived materials, the company also uses sustainable materials like recycled rubber and recycled plastic to construct its footwear. Insecta has been around since 2014 in Brazil, but the company recently announced it will be making an expansion into the United States. In addition to its flagship stores in Porto Aleg...

Brazilian long term rentals service QuintoAndar raises $64M Series C

There’s quite a bit wrong with real estate in Brazil, according to QuintoAndar founder and CEO Gabriel Braga. Those seeking long term rentals in big Brazilian cities like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are throttled by bureaucratic policies that enforce outrageously expensive deposits, the requirement of local cosigners and sky-high insurance fees. On the supply side, amateur landlords are tunnel visioned on making money from transactions, creating a low quality of service and many wasted hours o...

Brazil’s First-Ever Queer Art Show, Shut Down Last Year, Reopens To Huge Crowds

The exhibition, titled “Queermuseu” in Portuguese, opened last year in a bank-sponsored cultural center Porto Alegre; it was shut down by the bank after religious conservatives loudly accused it of promoting blasphemy, bestiality and pedophilia. This past weekend, following what became the largest crowdfunding campaign in Brazil’s history, the show opened at an art school in Rio, where thousands lined up to see it.

Brazil judge orders Lula to remain in prison overturning earlier ruling to release former president

A Brazilian appeals court judge on Sunday quashed a fellow judge's bombshell ruling ordering the release of jailed former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, in a day of legal tumult that comes just months before the South American country's presidential vote. Though he is serving a 12-year sentence for corruption, the wildly popular leftist Lula, 72, continues to lead opinion polls ahead of October's election and has vowed his name will be on the ballot. In his Sunday afternoon ...

AT WORK IN THE WORLD CUP: If You Have More Than One Name, You Must Suck...

Was watching the first weekend of the World Cup and because I happened upon Brazil's first match with the Swiss team, I had two workplace talent observations: 1--Asking Brazilians to complete I-9's would be full of problems, and  2--If you're a soccer player from Brazil and have more than one name, you must suck. The observations, of course, are due to the trend of Brazilian players to go by one name.  No first name/last name, just one name.  And because they are from Brazil, the names sound coo...

Internacional captain Andres D'Alessandro joined the club back in 2008. Internacional captain Andres D'Alessandro and his Gremio counterpart, Maicon Souza, needed to be restrained by officials from going after each other during the coin toss before their Brazilian city derby. Independiente enlist local wizard to help win Recopa Sudamericana

Having drawn in the first leg last week, Independiente have enlisted the help of a local wizard to ensure they beat Gremio in the upcoming second leg of their Recopa Sudamericana duel. Independiente made the long journey across the border and into Brazil earlier this week, arriving in Porto Alegre late on Tuesday evening. Getting off the coach, fans noticed the familiar figure of Manuel, a die-hard Independiente fan who also operates as a brujo -- a warlock/shaman type figure in his local neighb...

Porto Alegre To Salvador De Bahia — Red-Eye Flight, Amazing Landing and Snack OD

It’s 1:30 a.m. and I’m walking around in Barra, Salvador de Bahia, looking for a bottle of water and possibly some food. What do you think my chances are? Not of getting killed, of finding a convenience store open, I mean. And what the hell am I doing here? Rewind. We figured out our next destination one night in Porto Alegre, powered by Coke Zero (me), Fanta (it doesn’t count as “orange juice,” Mark…) and açaí ice cream (Feng). Tickets were bought. We were taking the plunge, we were going to Sa...

Three Anecdotes About Three People of Porto Alegre (And Many More of Them in Picture)

The first porto-alegrense I noticed were the homeless people wandering around, working (i.e. collecting trash to recycle) or just sleeping hidden in plain sight. It’s impossible not to see them, although sadly, you’ll quickly get used to zig-zaging between makeshift shelters—usually old mattresses, plastic chairs or supermarket carts as walls and blankets as doors. For instance, the Viaduct Otávio Rocha is “home” to a dozen of souls. Yes, it’s perfectly fine to walk by bodies lying on the sidewa...

Porto Alegre – Cities Within the City

I can’t find the right three of four adjectives that would best describe Porto Alegre. There are cities within this city, lives lived so differently that it’s hard to believe there are only blocks apart. If you arrive by bus, your first glimpse of Porto Alegre will be highway overpasses and underpasses, then suddenly a busy skyline with tall buildings. As soon as you step out of the rodoviária, you’ll see three lanes of orange-and-blue taxis parked just before the pedestrian crossing. Drivers wo...

You Know You’re in Brazil When…

You can buy delicious savoury empadas (mini pot pies) which are a nice change from empanadas found in Chile, Argentina and Uruguay. Common fillings are frango com requeijão (chicken and cream cheese), presunto e queijo (ham and cheese), espinafre e ricotta (spinach with ricotta), camarão (shrimp) or bacalhau (dried and salted cod). You eat at the comida a quilo, buffet-style restaurants where food is priced per 100 grams. It’s usually cheap and it’s a great way to try new specialties. Goodbyes f...

Busing to Porto Alegre

“Good night Mark, you gotta sleep now.” “Why?” “… Because it’s way past midnight and we have to get up early for the bus.” “Again?” Montevideo to Chuy was a five-hour ride, followed by the Chuí to Pelotas four-hour trip. This is our third long-distance bus trip in three days. “Yes, again.” “To where?” “Porto Alegre. So be nice and I promise, tomorrow I’ll take you to a place that has been on various lists of the most dangerous cities in the world for years. Sweet dreams!” After our visit last ye...

Has Arthur signed for Barcelona? Right now, one of the biggest midfield talents in Brazil is Gremio’s Arthur. As you might expect, the midfield schemer known as Arthur has a significantly longer real name: Arthur Henrique Ramos de Oliveira Melo. Arthur has starred for Gremio, who won the Copa Libertadores last week and he looks primed for a move abroad.
