I had completely forgotten what this movie was about — in fact, when I started watching it, I was expecting On the Mouth of Madness. It comes up with some interesting ideas — suggesting that “the devil” is of alien origin — but it doesn’t really go far enough. It wasn’t horrible, but definitely not one of Carpenter’s better movies.
