Plano police do best 'Cartman' impersonation arresting black kid for walking home in the snow

If you needed another example why the Texas Legislature should forbid police from arresting people for Class C misdemeanors, here's yet another poster-child case for the history books.Rodney Reese, an 18-year old black man living in Plano, was walking home from his job at the Walmart during the Snowpocalypse when police officers stopped him ostensibly for a "wellness check." Carrying a plastic bag, underdressed for the cold in a short-sleeve shirt, he told them he didn't want their help and was ...

Lots of local Texas #cjreform action, even as the #txlege is slow as Christmas

Here are a few odds and ends that merit Grits readers' attention:TX Senate Committees May Only Meet 2-3 Times: The Texas Legislature's ramp up remains slow as Christmas; a few things are happening, but "not much" appears to be the new normal. On its website, the state prosecutors' association told its members, "don’t be surprised if many Senate committees hold no more than two or three hearings on Senate bills for the entirety of this regular session." Yikes! Usually, you might see 8 or so.Vanis...

LAPD launches team to combat illegal street racing in the Valley following a surge in deaths

Habib “Harry” Sabzerou was a soft-spoken Realtor who was so honest that he would point out all of the faults of the homes he was trying to sell. He was the kind of father who would teasingly answer the phone with “Hi Dad!” when his grown daughter Del called, knowing those would be the first words she would say to him. His daughter will never hear those words again. Sabzerou was fatally struck by a 16-year-old boy who, authorities say, was illegally street racing in Tarzana in January of last yea...

Tito Puente's Cha-Cha-Cha

Yesterday, the temperature hit the mid-90s in New York. As the mercury climbed, thoughts turned to Tito Puente, the Les Brown of Latin dance music. In the 1950s, Puente was one of the so called "Big Three" mambo dance kings—Puente, Machito and Tito Rodriguez. While Machito veered toward Latin jazz and Rodriguez, a vocalist, was a bit more commercial, Puente's orchestra was primarily a dance band. But oh, what a dance band. The musicianship was extraordinary, as were the arrangements. He also be...

The note made mention of the coach's stats with the team, highlighting his 16 losses in 30 first-division matches, a controversial item that stirred reaction from journalists and fa...

Invisible Cities Illustrated: Artist Illustrates Each and Every City in Italo Calvino’s Classic Novel

If you want to read a book about cities, you still can't do much better than a slim, plotless work of fiction by Italo Calvino wherein the explorer Marco Polo tells the emperor Kublai Khan of what he's seen in his travels across the world. Originally published in Italian in 1972, Invisible Cities has inspired generations of readers, hailing from all across the world themselves, to think in entirely new ways not just about cities but about travel, place, perception, reality, myth, and literature...

Another power plant in Oxnard? Energy Commission must say no: Tom Steyer and Gladys Limon

California is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. But in our state, not all beaches are created equal. That becomes painfully clear if you drive 50 miles north of Los Angeles to Oxnard, where the beaches have been seized by corporate polluters, marred by industrial waste and devastated by three fossil-fuel power plants that sit along the shoreline. Oxnard has more coastal power plants than any other city in the state, and not coincidentally, its population is predominantly L...
