Aloha Friday Photo: Honolua Bay, Maui

Mahalo to Rachel Barsha for sharing this lovely photo with us for Aloha Friday Photos. Rachel’s photo shows Honolua Bay on the northwest side of Maui. As you can see it is tremendously beautiful. Rachel took this photo on an August day in 2017. As this bay is somewhat north-facing the ocean conditions change seasonally. It late spring, summer and early autumn, it tends to be smooth. When the water is calm it’s fantastic for snorkeling. (See our Honolua snorkeling experience.) Though Honolua Bay...

Comment on quick, easy salsa by Rachel

This is amazing! I made two batches – one as written with a deseeded jalapeño for my kids, and one with extra jalapeños for my husband and I. My kids typically eschew all salsa and all devoured spoonful after spoonful. Success!

Comment on classic shortbread by Rachel

In reply to S. These were amazing. I substituted 100 grams of Rye flour for 100 grams of AP, and flavored with the zest of an orange. I suspect these changes made a quite different cookie, but delicious.

Set on a lonely, windswept island, ‘Limbo’ explores the heartache and humor of displaced refugees

On a desolate Scottish island, a group of refugees from around the world linger in isolation, awaiting word as to whether the United Kingdom will grant them entry into their world or send them back to Syria, Afghanistan, Ghana, Nigeria or wherever else they have journeyed from.  Despite its fraught situation, “Limbo,” which focuses on the story of Omar, a young Syrian man played with beautiful restraint by Amir El-Masry (“Rosewater,” “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”), opens with an absurdly funny sce...

Better Every Year Tree Ring Art

Look how you and your sweetheart have grown. No, really—it’s all right here in Rachel and Jared Ergo’s beautiful artwork. Shaped like a heart and inspired by a cross section of a tree, this wooden wall hanging celebrates all the milestones you two have reached together. Each of your initials is carved into the core, while the rings display up to eight notable moments you’ve had together (and their dates), like your engagement, new home, or children’s birthdays. Then a coat of paint on top makes ...

Comment on spring asparagus galette by Rachel

I made this for dinner tonight and followed the recipe exactly, except I realized after I put it in the oven that I forgot to include the garlic. We didn’t miss it. This is an amazing recipe. The whole family loved it so much, that it was hard not to eat the entire thing. The flavors come together beautifully. I will be making this often while asparagus is in season. Thanks for another keeper!

Comment on marbled banana bread by Rachel

This is my all-time favorite banana bread recipe and my go-to when I have overripe bananas. I was happy with the chocolate:not chocolate ratio! It was hard to resist overswirling, but I think limiting the swirling helped each component to stand out.

Comment on cannoli pound cake by Rachel

I have been eyeing this recipe for years and finally got around to making it. This was so moist straight out of the oven and, as mentioned, even more so the next day. I am not usually big on oranges, but it really elevated this for me, so don’t be tempted to skip it! Super creative and a real crowd-pleaser.

Comment on quick, essential stovetop mac-and-cheese by Rachel

Have made many versions of this easy, tasty recipe for my newly-one year old! They have all been a big hit. If anyone else is trying to sneak in a few extra vegetables, I once made this with cheddar cheese and, when the sauce was done, used an immersion blender to blend in some steamed carrots. It added some sweetness and I’m sure could be done with any other steamed or soft vegetable. As a side note, Deb – would you ever consider making a category in your recipe index of foods that you found to...

Comment on ratatouille tart by Mark & Rachel

Comment on hummingbird cake by Rachel

In reply to Jeannie. Also can’t speak for Deb, but adding the spices and BS first lets them be thoroughly whisked in, and then the flour can be more gently folded so you don’t get too much gluten formation and tougher cake.
