6 Ways To Use Nostalgia In Marketing

While nostalgia marketing isn’t new, it is particularly relevant today at a time when people feel increasingly lonely on one hand and distrust brands and corporations on the other. Although nostalgia is not for every brand. In some cases, nostalgia can marginalize your brand by emphasizing that it is out of touch and is no longer relevant to consumers. Radio Shack initially scored big with its 2014 Super Bowl ad, featuring icons from the 1980s such as wrestler Hulk Hogan, the iconic DeLorean ...

The Value Of Love Expressed As Compassion

The woman who lived in the apartment behind ours was raising three kids by herself, two boys who were about my age, around thirteen, and their younger sister. She had married an American soldier who brought her to America, and not too many years later, he left her with their three children. I don’t remember ever seeing him come around the apartment complex. This woman didn’t speak English well, and she was a single mother, working in a kitchen, and doing her best to take care of her kids. The yo...

A look back at the sales training for Radio Shack's Model 100, a groundbreaking early laptop

When Radio Shack released the Model 100 in 1983, it was a breakthrough for portable computing: an AA-battery-powered laptop that you could fit in a briefcase, with a built-in modem and an instant-on Microsoft OS that contained the last production code Bill Gates ever wrote himself. The Model 100 was so seminal that it had its own sales-training literature, including Selling the TRS-80 Model 100, an industrial training film designed to help Radio Shack clerks explain why a customer should sh...

It’s long been conventional wisdom that the retail industry is dying. It seems that in a digital world, physical stores have become a thing of the past. Yet if ...

Losing your voice in curling is a skip's worst nightmare

SYDNEY, N.S. — It's one of the quirky parts of the roaring game that casual observers find most amusing — skips yelling at their sweepers to "hurry hard."But for as many jokes made about all the yelling and screaming in curling, it's a pivotal part of the game and strategy. It quickly becomes a skip's worst nightmare when their vocal chords start giving out on them and screams turn into squeals. That exact scenario happened to Nova Scotia skip Jill Brothers this week at the Scotties...

Want a Radio Shack t-shirt? Only 12 bucks.

As most of you probably know, Radio Shack is alive and well and living on the internet (plus a few franchise retail locations). I get an email from them once or twice a week. This deal (?) arrived just now. I’m actually tempted to get a TRS-80 t-shirt. The TRASH-80 was my first personal computer way back when. I wish they had it in a color besides white, though. DISCLAIMER: I am not affiliated with Radio Shack in any way, nor do I get any commission from the sales of these shirts. ...

Repairing Soldering Gun

I have two 100/140 watt soldering guns I use when wiring 120V Romex etc. The Problem: Most folks think when wire nuts are used you stick the ends into the nut and twist the nut and think it will hold. I am a vol firefighter and have been in attics of houses in the middle of the night and found arcing junction boxes where the wire nuts did not hold tight enough. Thus when I wired my house and had to use wire nuts for a splice I strip the insulation off about an inch from the end, clamp a smal...

In a string of Radio Shack robberies, courts convicted Timothy Carpenter of the crime based on evidence obtained from is cellular provider. A “view” from the courtroom: “Some good and hard thinking on all sides”

It’s a rainy day in Washington, and some people entering the courtroom have wet shoulders. This opinion day was added only yesterday, and the public gallery is not completely full. The bar section is even emptier than it was yesterday, with a few regulars in attendance again because they are awaiting one decision or another. Solicitor General Noel Francisco leads the contingent from his office, joined by his deputies Edwin Kneedler and Malcolm Stewart, as well as a handful of others. In the VIP ...

The paleocomputing miracle of the 76477 Space Invaders sound effects chip

In 1978, the 76477 Complex Sound Generation chip was foundational to creating the sound effects in many popular games, notably Space Invaders; it was also popular with hobbyists who could buy the chip at Radio Shack -- it could do minor miracles, tweaking a white noise generator to produce everything from drums to explosions, using an integrated digital mixer to layer and sequence these sounds. All the details on Moog’s new Grandmother semi-modular synth

Moog’s Mother line have all had patch cables. Now, the Grandmother adds something else – keys. Oh, and a heck of a lot of colors. We talked to Moog to get the inside scoop on the new Grandmother. Patch-ability is all the rage these days. There’s the rack modular scene, of course. But then we’re increasingly seeing patch points on desktop synths and keyboards, too. The idea is, you can create different modulation effects and a wider range of sounds by changing the routing of signal through the ...

The Chipotle E. coli outbreak inspired these 2 engineers to build a device that could quash the spread of foodborne illness

Two engineers have created a device called PathSpot that uses spectroscopy — that is to say, light — to help determine whether or not there's bacteria on hands. They were inspired to follow this path by the E. coli outbreak at Chipotle from a few years ago. PathSpot's co-founders say that the device could be used as the de facto form of sanitary regulation in hospitals, restaurants, airports, and schools in the future. Christine Schindler and Dutch  Waanders have long been intrigued by dirt...

I’m “I Had a Xanga Blog” Social Media Years Old

Sometimes it’s fun to reminisce about the good ol’ days of social media and being online. You know? Before we realized the people who created it are basically Voldemort, planning world domination with our data. Young folks today don’t even know how much things have changed in such a short amount of time. I joined Facebook in July 2004, 5 months after the evil genius Mark Zuckerberg created the platform as a sophomore at Harvard University. I, too, was a sophomore, but at the University of Illino...

In a sad day for UK geeks, Maplin enters administration

There’s some sad news for the gadget-buying populace of Britain. Troubled (but iconic) geek retailer Maplin has entered administration after it failed to find a buyer. While its 211 shops remain open, the chain’s prospects look unfathomably bleak. Maplin wasn’t just any old store. It’s was special. I guess the best way you could describe it is as almost analogous to Fry’s and Radio Shack in the United States. At one point, it stocked virtually every computer component you’d care to mention, alon...
