Roofing company in Orange pays $758,166 in back wages, penalties

An Orange-based roofing company has agreed to pay $758,166 in back wages and penalties after investigators found 341 workers weren’t paid overtime. A recent investigation of Saddleback Roofing Inc. by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division found the privately-held company’s owner paid some employees flat salaries, regardless of the number of hours they worked. Additional violations resulted from the employer’s practice of paying for overtime hours at straight-time rates, in separa...

Humane Society International: Save Ralph

Hollywood filmmakers and movie stars have joined forces with Humane Society International (HSI) to produce a powerful stop-motion animated short film, Save Ralph, calling for an end to cosmetic testing on animals around the world. Although banned in 40 countries, the practice is still perfectly legal in most of the world, and even making a comeback in some regions, subjecting untold thousands of animals to needless suffering and death.

10ft snake pulled from toilet after biting man’s bum (Thanks to Ralph) We may have already posted an item about this. There have been so many toilet-snake attacks in this ongoing epidemic that we can no longer tell them apart. The one thing we cannot afford to do, during this stressful time, is research.

What will you do once you’re fully vaccinated? Here’s what some older adults did

I am on day 17 post-second vaccine and feeling cautiously liberated at the age of 81. I am just curious what my contemporaries are doing as we slowly are getting the Monopoly card “getting out of jail free.” H.N. Dear H .N., Great you got the vaccine. We may be cautiously liberated but not totally free since we still need to comply with CDC guidelines even those of us who are fully vaccinated. Yet, there is a sense of new freedom. Unfortunately, those living in a senior residence may not ex...

beverly cleary, rest in peace, and thank you

Beverly Cleary, who died last week at the astounding age of 104, was a pivotal figure in the world of children's literature. Her books are treasures; her influence can scarcely be measured.Cleary was one of the first authors to feature young characters who were realistically imperfect. If she was not the first, then certainly she was the first popular, widely read writer who, as The Atlantic put it, "saw children as they are". Before Henry Huggins and Ramona, before Otis and Ellen and Ralph S. ...

If there’s one sport that has been under-served in pop culture, it’s roller derby. There’s Rollerball, Whip It, Kansas City Bomber, Unholy Rollers, and that’s about it. Kathryn Hahn has been acting for nearly 20 years. She’s been in movies like Step Brothers and We’re the Millers, and TV shows like Crossing Jordan and Parks and Recreation. Neanderthals could produce and hear human speech, new study finds

Neanderthals are emerging as having been much more advanced than previously suspected.Analysis of ear structures indicated by fossilized remains suggests they had everything they needed for understanding the subtleties of speech. The study also concludes that Neanderthals could produce the consonants required for a rich spoken language. Neanderthals' image has undergone quite an upgrade in recent years. Where we once we thought of them as knuckle-dragging just-slightly-more-evolved apes, we now ...

Thanks for everything, Rush: Michael Reagan

His fans knew it was coming, but they were still crushed to hear the news that Rush Limbaugh had died. His political enemies and the liberal mainstream media, on the other hand, fell all over themselves trying to see who could spit the most venom and hatred on his grave before he was even in it. They called him names, misrepresented his personality and, in the end, succeeded only in betraying how little they had listened to his show during the last 30 years. The bums who run the New York Times w...

‘Us Again’ First Look: Disney’s First Theatrical Animated Short in Five Years is an Ode to Dance

It’s been five years since Walt Disney Animation last released an animated short to be paired with one of its feature films (that excruciatingly long Frozen short that wouldn’t end was from Pixar, not WDA). And it’s been even longer since Disney earned acclaim for one of its original shorts, like the exquisite Oscar-winning 2012 short Paperman, which screened in front of Wreck-It-Ralph. And while not many people will likely be heading to theaters to catch Raya and the Last Dragon on the big scr...

Kroger isn’t backing down. The supermarket giant on Wednesday, Feb. 3, stood by its decision to shutter two grocery stores in Long Beach in response to the city’s temporary wage bump for grocery workers, even as city officials and employees called on the company to reverse course. Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia, Vice Mayor Rex Richardson, local labor leaders and Kroger employees spoke against the closures during a Wednesday rally at a Food 4 Less in North Long Beach — one of the sites that Kroge...
