Comment on carrot soup with tahini and crisped chickpeas by Rebecca

Hello Deb. I made this fantastic soup for supper again last night (for the 4th or 5th time?) and my hubby and well as our three kids (6, 4 and 2 yrs old) all just love it (even the picky eater). Not only is the soup delicious, it’s friendly to plant-based eaters, I double the chickpeas for leftover for lunchbox snacks, and I get to draw funny faces in soup with the tahini sauce, what’s not to love? I’ve not commented before but I’m a big fan of your website and just wanted to (finally) say th...

Employment law lessons from “Ted Lasso” – dating the boss

Good? Okay. No grumbling; you've been warned. Comment on baked farro with summer vegetables by Rebecca

In reply to emily. Made this and had to drain some liquid off at the end because even after an hour in the oven it was still soupy! It was about 1/2 cup liquid less if that’s helpful.

Comment on peter reinhart’s bagels by Rebecca

I have made these several times and have finally mastered it for the most beautiful and delicious bagels. My tips include: 1. Do not skimp on the parchment paper or the oil for either the resting or the baking steps. If you use it you can also omit the cornmeal if you don’t have any since they don’t stick to the paper when baked. When I didn’t use it or didn’t oil it, the bagels stuck and it ruined the rise and sometimes water would infiltrate the dough when I boiled them. 2. If you add the bar...

iRobot’s poop problem

I’m all for encouraging more young people to enter STEM, to explore engineering and perhaps ultimately pursue a career in robotics. It’s a field whose importance will only grow with time, as more of the world looks toward automated solutions. And it probably goes without saying that one of the most effective ways to bolster a workforce from automated job loss is ensuring that more people entering the workforce gain the skills for programming such machines. That said, there’s really no point in s...

Scarlett Johansson's Top Movies Ranked Best To Worst

Scarlett Johansson has had a prolific and multi-faceted career. Despite portraying the character of Natasha Romanoff in the MCU for over a decade, Johansson has managed to make films that cross an impressive array of genres. She's worked in indie films and foreign films, has a second career using her voice as a musician, and more. She resists being tied down by genres or archetypes; when she's been doing the same thing for too long, she swerves, usually with great results.Johansson has had the o...

Comment on purple plum torte by Rebecca

Made this for Rosh Hashanah tonight. It’s delicious and definitely worth making it the day before and waiting. I did half cardamom half cinnamon which I would not do again, probably just a pinch of cardamom. But I did toss the plums in 1 tbsp cassis and a pinch of cornstarch.

Vamp or Not? The Village in the Woods

This is a British folk horror directed by Raine McCormack and released in 2019. It captures, really well, that sense of Uncanny with the protagonists kept off kilter by the familiar feeling distinctly unfamiliar, a sense of decay and the feeling that they have stepped into the past. It plays with the idea of faerie – in the mist shrouded village that defies escape. There are elements, like the little “corn” dolls, which might tie into a deeper lore, unexplored, but are window dressing for the ...

Spencer review – Princess Diana’s disastrous marriage makes a magnificent farce

Kristen Stewart’s entirely compelling Di has no escape from the dress-up game of monarchy in Pablo Larraín’s unreverential movieSandringham, Christmas 1991. Bare trees, frosted fields, dead pheasants on the drive. Inside the grand house the dining table has been laid in readiness, but one of the principal guests – arguably the main course – is running late and lost. She grinds her car to a halt, tosses her perfect hair in frustration. “Where the fuck am I?” asks Diana, Princess of Wales. And so b...

Village of the Vampire – review

Director: Roberto D'Antona Release date: 2020 Contains spoilers I fail, and always have, to see the point in dubbing a movie – bar some accessibility reasons. For each movie where the dubbing is well done, there are many more, like this Italian vampire film, where the dub is mistimed and poorly voice acted. It must be cheaper, surely, just to subtitle the original recording? Not that the dubbing on this film, also known as Caleb, is the only issue. Overly long and poorly paced the film drips wi...

Alfred Hitchcock's 15 Best Films Ranked

With a career that spanned over 50 years, Alfred Hitchcock is an undisputed master of cinema. With around 55 feature films on his resume, it is extremely hard to narrow them down to a list of 15 -- and that's before you even get to ranking them. Hitchcock charted the political turmoil of the 20th century as it was unfolding; with his pre-war espionage thrillers "The 39 Steps" (1935) and "Sabotage" (1936), his examinations of the effects of World War II on the human condition in "Lifeboat" (1944)...

20 Movies About Serial Killers That Will Absolutely Creep You Out

Serial killers are scary. Sure, so are ghosts and monsters, but those occupy a distinct, purely fictional part of our minds. Supernatural creatures are ephemeral fears, frightening enough to generate a jolt or a few hours of unease, but nothing really beyond that.Serial killers are different because they're real. They live in our world, and appear on newscasts and the front pages, not just in books, movies, and old stories. They're flesh and blood, but there's something monstrous about them that...

Comment on ultimate zucchini bread by Rebecca

This recipe did not work for me at all! It was not baked after 50 minutes and turned into an unbaked, glutinous jelly-like texture. I even added on almost 35 extra minutes of bake time. Anyone else have this issue?

You’ve Got ‘Ted Lasso’: A Guide to the Rom-Com References in the Latest Episode

The latest episode of Ted Lasso makes the case for Roy Kent, romantic lead. Just kidding — every episode makes that case, and we’ve been sold from the moment Roy (Brett Goldstein) and Keeley (Juno Temple) exchanged their first nod. Since then, our favorite foul-mouthed footballer has been proving his penchant for romance with each passing scene. His “don’t settle for fine” speech in the season premiere was topped just an episode later by his, ahem, sexy expression of gratitude. By now we know b...

Taliban killings fuel fear, drive more chaos outside airport

By AHMAD SEIR, TAMEEM AKHGAR and REBECCA SANTANA KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Reports of targeted killings in areas overrun by the Taliban mounted Friday, fueling fears that they will return Afghanistan to the repressive rule they imposed when they were last in power, even as they urged imams to push a message of unity at weekly prayers. Terrified that the new rulers would commit such abuses and despairing for their country’s future, thousands have raced to Kabul’s airport, where chaotic scenes con...

‘Reminiscence’ Director Lisa Joy on Her Noir Influences and Directing Hugh Jackman [Interview]

Reminiscence is a real deal, large-scale noir. Hugh Jackman plays a bitter and jaded detective of the mind, looking like he could walk the dark and rainy streets next to Kirk Douglas or Burt Lancaster and not appear out of place. Jackman delivers old-school blunt dialogue and narration only his signature sincerity could sell. Filmmaker Lisa Joy‘s film is both new and old-school. It’s not the typical summer movie, in which characters solve conflict with fists, not brains. Joy’s movie is a carefu...

Comment on black pepper tofu and eggplant by Rebecca

I made this and while I thought it was good, I don’t think the effort it took made it worthwhile. Like another reviewer, I also threw in a some bok choy bc I had it in the fridge & I was looking for a little pop of color in this dish. I was concerned about the amount of black pepper called for so I used half. I’m glad I did. For me, it was enough kick/spice without being overwhelming. Generally, I love all of Deb’s recipes but this one wasn’t one of my favorites.
