Rafting Utah’s winding, crimson Cataract Canyon is the trip of a lifetime

“You ready? I’m going to try to get us to hit that hole head on so we get the biggest ride,” Zia says with a laugh from the back of our two-person, inflatable kayak as she steers us towards roller coaster waves on Cataract Canyon in Utah. We are on the last stretch of rapids here, on day five of a six-day, nearly 100-mile wilderness river trip through Canyonlands National Park. “I’ll try to remember to keep paddling, you try not to flip us,” I respond from the front. I’m the motor, she’s in c...

The glaring difference between British and American cop shows

My dad's been pestering me since the summer to watch the Irish police soap opera Red Rock now that it's on AmazonPrime. While I'm always down for a good crime story, I'm not always keen on cop dramas. But I finally got a chance to watch the pilot episode over the holidays — and lo and behold, I enjoyed it, too. — Read the rest

The best sober bars in Denver

Denver is a city that knows what it likes. Craft beer, for instance, of which there are more than 148 producers in a city whose population could fit into Brooklyn four times over. Rapidly fading Peyton Manning and John Elway jerseys still line man-cave walls and thrift store shelves, relics of bygone eras that locals can’t quite seem to move on from. There’s also the whole legal cannabis thing, and potentially even other illicit substances in the pockets of party-goers. But amid the trendy co...

Valley of Fire State Park It’s so easy to say you’re too tired, or broke, or unhealthy, or time strapped, or whatever. It’s hard to show up each day and remain true to your word. Lyle Lovett looks back at breaking into Nashville, the 30th anniversary of ‘Pontiac,’ and the tour that brings him to Cerritos on Sunday

Lyle Lovett remembers going to Nashville for the first time in 1984 to make the rounds of music publishers and record companies in search of someone willing to take a chance on a young, unknown singer-songwriter from Texas, someone willing to give him a listen and a deal. Those were strange days in Nashville, he says. A few years earlier the country music-themed movie “Urban Cowboy” kicked open the the honky-tonk doors and welcomed a whole new crowd to the dance. “It was a real boon to country m...

Arizona

I spent the most time in Arizona visiting with my Mom who, at age 92, is still plugging along. I went out walking early mornings to escape the heat. Two days it got up to 100! A cousin came to visit and I took him and his wife to see Sedona, a beautiful red rock region with this famous chapel designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. We stopped at a popular shopping mall called Tlaquepaque. It’s like a Mexican village full of high end shops. I also took them up to The Boulders, an area full of, as you...
