Extra Crunch roundup: Security data lakes, China vs. Starlink, ExtraHop’s $900M exit

News broke this morning that Bain Capital Private Equity and Crosspoint Capital Partners are purchasing Seattle-based network security startup ExtraHop. Part of the Network Detection and Response (NDR) market, ExtraHop’s security solutions are for companies that manage assets in the cloud and on-site, “something that could be useful as more companies find themselves in that in-between state,” report Ron Miller and Alex Wilhelm. Just one year ago, ExtraHop was closing in on $100 million in ARR an...

China’s drive to compete against Starlink for the future of orbital internet

There has been a wave of businesses over the past several years hoping to offer broadband internet delivered from thousands of satellites in low-earth orbit (LEO), providing coverage of most of the earth’s surface. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen excitement in the category. Companies and people that you have heard of — Bill Gates and Motorola, to name a few — invested billions of dollars into this business model two decades ago in an adventure that ended in many bankruptcies and very few pe...

Week 16: Red Star win the Coupe de France in an American stadium

100 years ago this week: Week 16A century ago, Red Star, the football club I follow in France, won its first French Cup. I couldn't ignore that fact in this series! Beyond this simple statistic though, what struck me about the event was the stadium in which the game was played - a facility in Paris built by American soldiers after WW1.Kick off the centenary celebrations here.Excelsior, April 25, [Author: Adam]

Amazed by SAF yeast

Amazed by SAF yeast Submitted by alpaca on May 13, 2020 - 6:40pm. I was lucky enough to get hold of some yeast a week ago, having run out early in the lockdown. I normally use Fleischmann's or Red Star active dry yeast, but I was happy to get whatever I could, which turned out to be SAF red instant yeast.I have to say, I'm amazed by the rise and stamina of the SAF yeast. I've gotten the best rise I've ever seen out of my white sandwich bread, and the yeast is way more active i...

This recipe keeps resulting in collapsed loaf

This recipe keeps resulting in collapsed loaf Submitted by Shadokat on January 5, 2020 - 12:41am. Hi Everyone! I'm at my wits' end! I love the flavor of this recipe but can't get it to succeed in my Sunbeam 5891 bread maker. Perhaps some of you can tell me how to adjust this recipe. It rises and looks normal, but then it "pops" like a bubble during baking. I end up with a thin layer of crust on the top and a crater underneath that sinks down about 1/3 of the way.1 1⁄3 cups milk1⁄4 c...

10 ways North Korea uses technology to keep its citizens in the dark about the outside world

North Korea is nicknamed the hermit kingdom — a hermetically sealed dictatorship where it's hard for both people and information to get in or out. But the advent of the internet and accompanying technologies means it is easier than ever for North Koreans to access foreign media, films, radio, and even pornography. A new report from the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea details the way in which North Korea's supreme leader Kim Jong-un also uses technology to counter this influx of infor...

United eke out rare away win on emotional day in Belgrade

Paris (AFP) – Manchester United made an emotional return to Belgrade on Thursday and, after a ceremony to remember the ‘Busby Babes’, eked out a first away win since March, 1-0, over Partizan.  Anthony Martial scored the only goal of the Europa League Group L game with a penalty kick after 43 minutes, but the hosts had eight strikes on target to just three by United. The game marked the return to the ground where Matt Busby’s famous team of talented youngsters played their last game, a European...

Red Star Sourdough Yeast

Red Star Sourdough Yeast Submitted by old baker on October 7, 2019 - 12:09pm. Several weeks ago I asked if there were any dry commercial SD yeasts available.  Red Star popped up and after unsuccessful attempts to locate it in my area, I ordered a free sample from RS.  I made a batch following the instructions, which are fairly simple.  The results were less than desirable, at least for me. Mixing the yeast with water (step 1) produced the most vile odor I can remember.  The dough di...

Airport Survey: AirVenture Edition

When the buzz of airplanes heading east to Oshkosh overpowered the humming air conditioner, it seemed a good time to wade into the humid heat for an airport survey. For decades, I’ve wondered how the small town airports fared just before and during EAA AirVenture, and this year I promised myself to find out. Piper Cherokees of all vintages covered the ramp and upper reaches at Waupaca Municipal Airport (PCZ), a 42-mile drive northwest of OSH. A decade ago, Terry Hawking and his wife, Karen, dec...

Formation Flying In A Motorglider: We’re Going To Do What!?!

To anyone who doubts that the aviation community is, by and large, a close knit family of like-minded geeks, one must look no further than some of the grassroots events at their local airports.   Through a happy coincidence, I found myself at Livingston County’s Spencer J. Hardy Airport on a warm summer weekend to observe and photograph a Red Star Pilots Association formation flight training event hosted by Hangar 639.  The collection of aircraft at the event was vast ranging from motorglider...
