Birth of 3 Wolf Pups Means Colorado Has Its First Native Wolves Since the 1940s

Colorado wildlife officials on Wednesday confirmed the existence of a litter of gray wolf pups—the first thought to be seen in the state in decades. The discovery is also noteworthy in light of a voter-passed initiative last year to reintroduce wolves to Colorado by 2023.Read more...

Endangered Red Wolf: a Distinct Species

Report confirms the endangered red wolf is its own distinct species The wolf taxonomy committee of the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) has concluded that the endangered red wolf, found only in five counties in eastern North Carolina, is a valid and distinct species. The distinction gives the red wolf a much-needed scientific and political boost; there are fewer than 30 remaining red wolves in the wild. Recently, some North Carolina officials argued that the...

Red Wolf Headline Hunters

The latest news out of Texas is that the DNA of a wolf declared extinct in the wild lives on in a Texas pack.I am not surprised. While extinctions are a very serious thing, they are a lot less common than folks would have you believe. In fact, only a few hundred animals have gone extinct in the last 400 years, and most of these are birds endemic to small Pacific islands decimated by rats and feral cats.Today, about as many animals are "rediscovered" as BEING NOT EXTINCT as are declared extinct.P...

Quick Hits: Race Pays Female Winners More Than Men to Combat Wage Gap

Utah Trail Race Pays Female Winners More Than Men to Combat Wage Gap In hopes of bringing attention to the gender wage gap, Jim Skaggs, race director of Utah’s Antelope Island 50K, awarded the top female finishers of his race 20 percent more than the top male finishers. Nationally, women make about 80 cents to every dollar earned by a man and in Utah the wage gap is even higher—women make 68 cents to every dollar a man brings in. In competitive racing, male purses are often larger than their fem...

BREAKING: Red Wolf Rule Delayed, Giving Wolves a Fighting Chance

Last night, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced a delay of the proposed rule for red wolves because of the federal court ruling issued earlier this month in the Eastern District of North Carolina that found that the Fish and Wildlife Service had violated the Endangered Species Act in its management of the wolf. The proposed rule would have dramatically reduced red wolf habitat by 80% and all but ended the hopes for red wolves in the wild. The federal court ruling found that the rule vio...

Critically endangered red wolf may be forced into extinction by GOP

There are only 45 to 60 red wolves left in the wild, concentrated in a small area of North Carolina — but for Republicans, that is simply too many. The Canis rufus, which was declared endangered in 1982 and critically endangered in 1996, has seen only slight growth in its population over the last 30-plus years. As such, the wolves have been protected through a captive breeding and reintroduction program funded by the federal government. But now with Republicans controlling the Senate, a covert p...

Red Wolf parent Broadwind Energy sees shares drop after earnings

Three months after Cicero, Illinois-based Broadwind Energy (Nasdaq: BWEN) bought growing Sanford manufacturer Red Wolf, the transaction is making an impact. On Tuesday, Broadwind reported sales of $56.1 million, up 20 percent over the first quarter of 2016. The quarter included $3.3 million in sales from the Process Systems segment, which includes both the Abilene compressed natural gas and fabrication business and Red Wolf. But it’s not translating on Wall Street. A day after Broadwind report...
