What’s a ‘Valley Girl’? Local artists want to break the mold and reclaim it

Erin Stone was traveling in Kathmandu, Nepal, when a local asked what locals often do: Where are you from? The San Fernando Valley, Stone answered, and he surprised her with an immediate look of recognition. “Like, oh my god!” he teased in a high-pitched, nasal trill. For Stone, it was just one of the many moments in her life that reminded her of the “valley girl” persona and its global reach, codified by 80’s pop culture. In part, it was this ditsy, mall-frequenting suburban socialite caricatur...

This Washington Post article — "How a dubious Russian document influenced the FBI’s handling of the Clinton probe" — is extremely hard to read.

I needed to read it out loud with Meade and discuss it sentence-by-sentence and almost word-by-word. It took me at least 10 minutes to get past the first 2 sentences. So I don't have the time or patience to parse through this entire thing, and I encourage you to read it carefully and try to figure out what the Washington Post is trying to pump up or minimize, who's lying or stretching the truth, and whether the underlying story in the document has any element of truth to it. Why did 3 of the 4 k...

Why This Mom Is Certain Her C-Section Scar Makes Her A 'Badass Mama'

Raquel Renteria was hesitant about having a C-section to welcome her second child. Now, she’s certain the experience has made her a “badass mama.” Renteria welcomed her daughter on Nov. 23. She hoped to have a “natural, peaceful birth” with a midwife, but at 32 weeks she learned her baby was in a breech position. At 37 weeks, the baby still hadn’t managed to flip over so Renteria agreed to have a C-section, a decision she said was not easy for her. “I was terrified of this surgery,” she wrote i...

Donald Trump Is Provoking The Latino Community. Will It Answer In November?

PHILADELPHIA ― In 2006, there were the May Day marches. In 2010, the Dream Act failed. In 2012, the president implemented deferred action for undocumented childhood arrivals. In 2013, the Senate passed immigration reform legislation. That legislation went nowhere ― so in 2014, the president announced deferred action for undocumented parents of Americans. In 2016, the Supreme Court stalled the president’s executive actions on immigration. Latinos had high hopes for the last 10 years, but have be...

Austin passes Fair Chance Hiring ordinance

Last night, the Austin City Council passed a Fair Chance Hiring ordinance, becoming the first city in the South to require employers to wait until a conditional offer of employment has been made to inquire about an applicant’s criminal history. While similar "Ban the Box" initiatives have gained traction across the country, the Austin ordinance goes further than most fair chance laws in that it applies to private employers, delays the criminal history question until the point of conditional off...
