Pregnancy Over 40, Not just luck Was getting pregnant over 40 just the luck of the Irish? Actually I agree to a point. If you think about all the things that have to come together to get pregnant and carry a baby to term, there's a bit of luck no matter what your age. Was it a sur...

Your Guide to Setting SMART Goals For Your Finances and Life

It’s that time of the year where people start fresh and make new goals, and many of those are financial. But are they smart goals? Did you know that according to a 2007 survey by British psychologist Richard Wiseman, 88% of resolutions end in failure? We tend to try to do too much with little willpower to achieve our resolutions.  We need systems to help us along. SMART Goals is one such system. One way we can help ourselves to success in our resolutions and goals is to make them S.M.A.R.T. – Sp...

'Dowsing works' says Humphrys after using it to find water on his Welsh farm

Dowsing works, John Humphrys has said, after he used it on his farm to find a broken pipe.  Speaking to Professor Richard Wiseman from the University of Hertfordshire, the Today Programme presenter said he "felt a force" when using the method, also known as water divining, to find a pipe which had been cut through by a plough.  The exchange followed the discovery earlier this week that engineers from most of the UK's major water companies use the method to find leaks or broken pipes.  10 of...

Barking Up The Wrong Tree: The Benefits of Being Mostly Optimistic

Eric Barker writes at Bakadesuyo.com and his talent/skill is synthesizing hundreds of different sources of academic research and historical anecdotes into actionable ways to improve your life. That’s kind of a crowded field these days, but I enjoyed reading his book which combines a lot of his past work: Barking Up the Wrong Tree: The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Success Is (Mostly) Wrong. If I had to sum up this book in one word, it would be “nuanced”. Be nice but...

You can find classes to master every day. For that Caribbean Surprise and Hobby Exhibit used in late November, my relative and that I travelled in 2003. Why Are Some People Luckier Than Others?

Timothy Dexter was an incredibly eccentric person and businessman. He was also incredibly lucky. Born in Massachusetts on January 22, 1747, Dexter had neither schooling nor money. He began life as a farm laborer alongside his father before becoming an apprentice to a Boston leather dresser at 16. Five years later, Dexter completed his apprenticeship and moved to Newburyport, where he had his first stroke of luck. There, he met and married a wealthy young widow and purchased a large mansion using...

Strategies for Healthier Dev

Not too long ago, I was part of a panel at the launch event for TechLadies, an initiative that encourages women to learn to code. Along the way, I mentioned a bit about my background as an athlete. As we were leaving to go home, the woman next to me jokingly asked if I was a better basketball player or a better developer. Without missing a beat, I said I was a better basketball player. After all, I’ve been playing basketball for over half my life; I’ve only been coding for two and a half years. ...

5 Science-Backed Reasons Youngest Children Win At Life

The baby of a family gets no respect.  Of all the siblings, they're usually the ones singled out as troublemakers, irresponsible, attention-hungry, get-away-with-anything brats. On top of all that, for most of their childhoods, the baby is the easy, gullible targets for older siblings' pranks. But research on birth order has found that youngest children really aren't all that bad. In fact, to the disbelief of eldest siblings everywhere, the characteristics that made last-borns the butt of family...
