Peaking from the Peak

Saturday was ride day this past weekend and Colin's general plan was "somewhere out East with grub at Porangahau".  This appeared to be enough to entice Brett and John along too - although I think that John wanted to put some miles on his 120km old 1290...Anyway the plan was to meet in Pahiatua before heading out towards Pongaroa.  I got underway a bit early at just after 8 so got in my only [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Anzac Antics

Three years ago I first met Chris as he was completing a special Anzac SS1600k on his R1 and this year he was at it again on Connie #2 while his wife Stella was tackling it on the R1.  And with their route once again coming through Ashhurst, I really couldn't come up with a decent enough excuse not to go out and say hi.Colin and I both kept an eye on their Spotwalla tracks throughout the day and [Author: Andrew Thomson]

2021 TT2000 - Coming home Part 1

Whenever the TT is in the South Island (my preferred option), it is always a spectacular excuse to do a bit more poking around the mainland.  This year, one of our missions was to pop over to Cardrona and stay with Colin's step daughter and have some fun while there.  But first we had to get there. There are a few different routes to Cardrona from Oamaru but checking GoogleMaps shows that the [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Uber shares could rise as much as 65% with profitability 'around the corner,' Jefferies says

Uber has posted strong growth in its delivery service. halbergman/Getty Images Uber landed a buy rating and an upside-scenario price target of $90 at Jefferies on Thursday. Uber could reach EBITDA profitability in the fourth quarter from its "much leaner structure." The ride-sharing company is among the "top reopening plays" at Jefferies. Grading Gravel

No, I'm not talking earth moving - settle down Colin - but on Saturday we had our first gravel ride since the TT2000 and the chance to compare our local gravel to the autobahns of the South Island.I met up with Colin at Sanson and from there the plan was to ride Turakina Valley Road and that was pretty much all the planning we did.  But leaving Sanson I had an idea...Rather than ride all the way [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Not a TT report...

Yeah, still haven't got around to my TT write-up.  Excuses are work and more riding...Last weekend I went for a pretty short 170km squirt with Colin.  We had a bit of fun on our way to Hunterville but apart from that and a good dousing, the ride was really blog-worthy.  But this past weekend both the Connie and the RMX got some exercise.Let's start with Saturday's ride...I'd been informed that [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Lyft jumps as company marks best week for rides since the start of the pandemic

Mario Tama/Getty Images Lyft shares picked up more than 6% Wednesday following an upbeat February-trends update.  Rideshare volume toward the end of February had its best week since pandemic lockdowns began in March 2020.  Lyft forecast an adjusted EBITDA loss of $135 million, which is narrower than its previous loss projection of up to $150 million.  Visit the Business section of Insider for more stories. Hot Lap

After the mammoth tyre wrangling of Saturday, Sunday was always going to be play day.  But, rather than scrub in those new tyres on the Ten, the neglected Connie needed a decent little run.Colin and John rocked up to my place some time after 9am and after a bit of a natter we decided that we should go for a ride.  Our adventure started with the short squirt over to Pahiatua where the lads [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Quick Xmas trip

This year for Christmas my family was basing themselves in and around Nelson where one of my sisters is based.  For me this meant a quick trip down on the Tenere.I left Palmy on the 23rd with my wets on as there was weather coming.  In the end I got to the ferry with only a few spits so promptly removed the wets and put them away.  Of course this was a big mistake...Within about ten minutes the [Author: Andrew Thomson]

FRDC MC Xmas ride

A few weeks ago I thought that the FRDC MC should really try and squeeze one last ride into 2020.  On Saturday we had all pretty much finished up with work so it was time for that ride.Just before 9:30 the Connie and I made our way down to a local petrol station to meet the others.  We had a few hangers-on join us so in the end there was eight bikes in all ready to hit some back roads.First up, [Author: Andrew Thomson]

2020 Coast to Coast

Last Saturday was the 28th Coast to Coast charity ride and I believe my 21st.  This time around I had enticed Colin up with the suggestion that we just ride the first half of the ride to Woodville and then disappear in search of gravel after the lunch break. On the way out to the beach the S10 was blown all over the place in some pretty windy conditions and at the Himitangi intersection I managed [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Mousescapades

The plan for Sunday had been to take two WR's up to National Park and try and hook up with a bunch of other ADVRiders but Chevvy's bike appears to have caught Covid (the only logical explanation as WR's are supposed to be bulletproof) so that plan was toast - there was a chance we wouldn't hook up with the other guys and I didn't want to tackle those routes solo. So, I had to come up with another [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Tyre scrubbing

On Saturday Colin took delivery of his new GSA and naturally it had to get to it's first service as soon as possible.  He had got to know it a little on Saturday but that only whet his appetite so we had to see if it would still start on Sunday, get that new rubber scrubbed in and the bike ready to be dropped in for the service on Monday...it's a tough job but someone has to keep him company and [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Warming up

Yep, I was glad I removed my "waterproof" liner from my jacket yesterday - and I should have done the same with my trou too...Yesterday was a public holiday and I'm sure the idea there is to give you more time for getting a ride in, so that's what we did.Colin and Adi (on his new-to-him Wee) turned up just before 9am and we set our sights on the Napier-Taihape Road.  Two things you can be sure [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Coffee in Eketahuna

Some time ago Oldbeer from Advrider suggested that some of the Kiwi Advriders needed to meetup at some stage to put some faces to names.  Apparently he likes coffee and decided that a coffee would be the perfect excuse for us to meetup and then perhaps even go for a pootle.Well, Saturday was the day and after twisting Colin's arm I managed to rope him in as well - it is tough sometimes...We left [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Weekend Wander

Ok, so I'm behind on my write-ups, so I'll start with yesterday's one and then go back in time for a couple more when I get a chance.Yesterday was a pretty decent sort of a day and Colin just happened to have a demo 1250GS sitting in his shed that really needed some exercise.  Why he had the bike is a story for another day but it did definitely need a ride - or perhaps Colin needed one slightly [Author: Andrew Thomson]

FRDC MC Ride #3

After being locked up working from home and finally almost getting through winter (the weather here has been rubbish since Sunday), I thought it was time for another FRDC ride.Extensive planning (yeah right) started about 3 weeks ago and it appeared that quite a few were hanging out for a pootle but the weather really was our major concern.  Early on we decided that we would make the final [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Prototype Roller Coaster That Makes Riders Do Barrel Rolls Is a Next-Generation Puke Factory

As with almost everything, the roller coaster wars, where theme parks across the country try to top each other with wilder attractions every Summer, were put on hold for 2020. But that hasn’t stopped coaster designers from continuing to toy with the laws of physics. If you love to spend your weekends vomiting, the AxisRead more...

2020 Snow ride

I'd been waiting for this one all winter - a good snow dump to go and explore on Mighty Mouse.  My first two snow rides on the V-Strom and then the Tenere were fun but I had to end the Tenere ride earlier than planned due to a bit much snow and ice and not wanting to drop the Tenere while out on my lonesome.  With the WR that sort of shenanigans are no problem! Finally, on Wednesday night last [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Its been a while...

Maybe not since I've been for a ride but definitely its been a while since the poor old Connie got out for a pootle.  What with our Covid lockdown and then a long wait for a new battery (thanks lockdown), I hadn't put fuel in the bike since January!  That's just plain excusable and now that I've looked that up I will have to go out and apologise to the poor wee girl.Anyway, that battery was [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Ice Ride?

Another pretty nice day today (although there's some weather on its way) so I was co-opted into a wee ride with Colin...Last night we made plans for looking for some gravel but this morning he rang to say that we had a relatively new rider tagging along so it was going to be a tarmac ride.  I was really keen to take the Connie but on getting home with the new battery discovered that it was the [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Release the Mouse!

So after Saturday's reintroduction to the worlds favourite pastime I was back to being a happy chappy.  But then, things got even better - I managed to wangle my way onto another ride on Sunday!Mike and Nev were assaulting Takapari Road on their KTM's and decided that they could make room for Chevvy and I.  Not mad enough to take the Tenere on the ride, this was going to be an outing for the WR [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Freedom ride

Man this was a long time coming...Being denied access to simply the best stress release engineered by man for nigh on two months is simply cruelty to dumb animals.  But, when it started to become apparent that we'd finally have the shackles removed soon, we started planning...Initial plans had us tearing up Eastern gravel, then perhaps one of our favourite trips up the middle and then back to the [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Shake down

After all the fettling (and spending) it was time to give the WR a run and checkout the new gearing and tyres.  A message from Oldbeer on Adventure Rider inviting me to coffee on Sunday seemed like a good omen, so Sunday was the day. I met up with Oldbeer in town, skipped the coffee but did have a bit of yarn about bikes, routes etc - as you do.  I also forgot to take a piccy of his Vee... [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Just another KTM rider?

On Friday night Colin rang to tell me that he had a visitor.  And he wasn't just some mate or random off the street but a bloke from Austria spending 7 weeks touring NZ on a hired KTM.  The KTM was supplied by some geezer who apparently can pedal pretty handily... Yeah, that brake lever is a little bent now... We hatched a bit of plan on Friday night and I met up with Colin and Roland in [Author: Andrew Thomson]
