Video of Coney Island rides from the 1930s and 1940s that would never fly today

Michael Hearst, composer of the classic "Songs for Ice Cream Trucks" and author of the excellent Unusual Creatures, shares this delightful video of seemingly quite dangerous rides at Coney Island in the 1930s and 1940s. These sanctioned affronts to safety remind me of the fun I had rolling around with my brothers in our station wagon's cargo area on long road trips.

Coming Home - Thursday

Thursday was the day that had seemed so far away a week ago and the day that we dreaded.  Yep, it was the day we had to say goodbye to the South island and head home to mentally prepare for the return to work. I met Colin in Richmond and after a nice ride over the Whangamoa and Rai Saddles we had a quick stop in Havelock. Preparing for work... Next up was a trip through Queen Charlotte [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Coming Home - Wednesday

On Wednesday we stayed based in the Nelson/Tasman area with plans to do some exploring over the hill in Golden Bay. Around nineish I road across to Motueka to meet up with Colin and another mate of his, Mitch.  Mitch is (actually was now) a DR (Wee-strom now) rider who has been around a few more summers than both Colin and I and knows how to punt a knobbly shod DR... Our first little squirt was [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Coming Home - Tuesday

After our rest day (only around 385km) we had slightly bigger plans for Tuesday.  We had to be in Richmond/Motueka by the end of the day but we couldn't just ride straight there now, could we? Colin was dead keen to ride out to Karamea and then walk the Heaphy Track so that's how we kicked off the morning... The lady at the motel was good enough to allow us to leave our panniers at the motel so [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Coming home - Monday

After our big weekend of riding a decent sleep (in a cold motel) followed by a later start was in order.  We got away from the motel at around 10am and took a short ride up to Kaipoi to checkout Motomox and get Colin some flash new trou. We spent a fair bit of time there chatting to the owner, looking at all sorts of farkles and riding gear and checking out some of his photos.  The mapping [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Tar surfing

Last weekend Colin and I had a little TT planning session and he mentioned that we had better go riding this weekend.  So, on Friday night he contacted me and said that he and his mate Carl were coming up for a scoot. The eagles beemwaas landed at around 9 and after a bit of messing around in town we headed off to hit the track.   From Pahiatua we crossed over onto Pahiatua-Pongaroa Road [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Happy New Year!

Yep, a new year eh?  Better get started on some riding then... Today it was the Connie's turn and I was dead keen for a decent little pootle.  So much so that I never even took any photos...you'll have to make do with videos... I left home just before 10am and it was already fairly warm so before I left I opened up all the vents in my gear and man, they are good! My ride started with a quick [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Entire amusement park for auction

In the market for a Ferris Wheel? Carousel? Scrambler? Go-kart Fleet? How about just a Chili Cheese Dispenser? The entire contents of the Heritage Square Amusement Park in Golden Colorado will be up for auction on October 25. It's cash-and-carry (certified or cashier’s check accepted) but "buyers of large pieces will have additional time for removal." Whew. I've got my eye on that Space Shuttle Ride from 1980 and maybe the 1963 Tilt A Whirl. Heritage Square Amusument Park Auction Brochure PDF...

Anti-clockwise

A wee while ago Colin F and I went on a little trip taking in the Napier-Taihape road and on Saturday another Colin got in touch suggesting another ride over to Taihape but this time going in the opposite direction and taking in Middle Road as well.  How could I refuse? Sunday morning dawned fine but it was bit crisp with a light frost and while Colin made his way (battling all sorts of ice [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Wandering around Whanganui

This weekend was another Adv ride planned by Phreaky Phil and it was nice to see that after a week of rain (nice for a change) he had included a fine day in his plans.  The ride was planned out of Whanganui and guys and girls rocked in from all over the North Island to take in some mint back roads. After an early rise and walk of the dog I hit the road at about 7:15 to ride over to Whanganui for [Author: Andrew Thomson]

The Ride: From Portland to Eugene on two wheels

(Photos: Jonathan Maus – Click for captions. So often while driving down Interstate 5 south of Portland my mind wanders: Could I ride to Eugene? What would the roads be like? See the route on RideWithGPS.com. I began to ask myself those questions again this past weekend as the date for the Cycle Oregon Weekender event approached. This year it was held on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene. I’ve ridden to Salem a few times via backroads on both sides of Interstate 5 — for the Fresh...

Chilly Mountain ride

Saturday was a fantastic day in Palmy and with Sunday supposed to be bringing a change in the weather then I needed to use Saturday for my important battery charging - the poor old Connie hadn't even been fired up in ages... But, naturally, she fired up straight away and we were off.  This time around I had a bit of a plan - I wanted to ride the Paraparas but decided that I wanted to ride them [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Just Watching Video of Six Flags' Dizzying New Spinning Ride Is Making Me Want to Puke

Every summer, amusement parks across the country compete to lure visitors with bigger, faster, and more terrifying thrill rides. This year, Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey is hoping that people will actually line up to ride its new Cyborg Cyber Spin that churns stomachs along three different axes.Read more...

No, I hadn't forgotten...

...that this was in my shed... It's a long weekend here and yesterday was supposed to be the best day of the weekend weather-wise (forecast is holding true so far) so I took the opportunity to give the poor old Connie a quick run. I decided that perhaps lunch in Hunterville sounded ok but that I should probably make sure that I got in a decent ride.  So rather than a direct route over [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Riders Spent Two Hours Trapped On This Hanging Roller Coaster's Tallest Hill

The only thing more terrifying than being stuck on a roller coaster, is being stuck at the highest part of the ride. And the only thing more terrifying than that is if it happens to be one of those coasters where you’re hanging upside down from a harness, leaving nothing but 98-feet of free-fall space between you and…Read more...

Scrubbing in

Sunday was a cracker of a day and there were these new tyres that needed some scrubbing.  After the usual dog walking and such I decided to check out the Tagorama thread and go in search of the tag.As it turned out, the tag was an easy find but a wee bit of a peddle to get to.  I decided to make a bit of a loop out of it and you'll see that on the map further down the page. The trip over the Pahiatua track was good but I did show a little respect to the new tyres and didn't push them too hard.  T...

Playing in the mud

Long weekends rock!  Especially when you get some nice weather to go out and play in.On Sunday it was the Connies turn to get some loving and after getting everything done really early (due to daylights saving ending but still waking up at the same time) I was geared up and off down the road by just after nine. With still just a T-shirt and shorts on under my gear I cruised on over to Bulls to fuel the bike up and to scrape the bugs off my visor that I should have cleaned before I left...I had a ...

Staying off the main drag

On Sunday, fresh from finishing his first TT, Colin invited me along on a road ride and with my sore butt pretty well recovered, how could I say no?On the slightly chillier autumn morning I met up with him and another of his mates (Rob, CB500X) for a trip over the Napier-Taihape road.We got away a little after 9 and made our way across to Colyton where Colin surprised me by going straight ahead instead of turning left.  I thought that he perhaps was then going to take us off onto Valley Road and...

Charging up

It had been a while since the Connie had a decent run and with her going to be ignored for a few more days I decided to take her for a quick run on Saturday. It was quite nice when I got underway, still a little overcast and quite a bit cooler than it has been lately.  I even zipped up a few vents in my jacket - for a while.I was a little unsure exactly where I was going to go and for how long but I had all day to mess around if I wanted and wandered my way over to Colyton and then onto Vinegar H...

2018 Ride for Kids

Today I'd decided to support a local charity ride benefiting kids with Down Syndrome - a nice idea and I was happy to give them my $20.  But things could have gone better...I arrived fairly early and signed on and spoke to a few riders while I waited in the hot sun.  With a lot of agricultural equipment surrounding me I felt a little like the odd one out but hey, it was great that the ride was getting a good turn out.  The photos below are pretty much before "everyone" arrived, I'd say that befo...

Popping out for some greasies

On Saturday morning I got a phone call from Colin F who asked me if I was keen for a little ride over in Hawkes Bay on Sunday.  I'm not good at coming up with excuses on the spot so ended up saying the first thing that came to mind...yes...Come Sunday, me, the Tenere and her bald rear tyre fuelled up in town and rode around to meet Colin where he was busy adjusting his chain (what's that?) on his shiny new Africa Twin.  After a bit of ogling at bikes we got organised and Colin led the way out of...

Make the Haunted Mansion's Hitching Ghosts Who Follow You Home

The Haunted Mansion, no matter what Disney park it’s in (California, Orlando, Paris, or Tokyo), has been a fan favorite since it opened at Disneyland in 1969. For years even The Walt Disney Company would refer to the Pirates of the Caribbean ride as the last attraction which Walt personally supervised, but that’s baloney. Walt was shown concept art and models of many of the effects that would appear in The Haunted Mansion which eventually opened years after his death. Which brings me to today’...

A Water Slide Ferris Wheel Might Be the Most Stomach-Turning Ride Ever Invented

Water slides are best when they take you on a long meandering ride through curves and hills, but not every amusement park has room for a big installation. That’s why a German company has combined water slides with Ferris wheels to create this dizzying attraction that will have riders wondering which way is up.Read more...
