You win the Heisman Trophy and...

I googled the name because I wanted to get a link to somewhere other than The Washington Post for Kyler Murray's decision to go into a baseball, not a football, career. And I thought he sounded like a really sweet guy:“This is crazy,” Murray said repeatedly during a brief and soft-spoken acceptance speech. He thanked teammates on either side of the ball for putting him in a position to win so many postseason honors. “You make me look so much better than I am,” he said....Murray called his father...

2018 Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society Winners: ‘The Hate U Give’ Takes Best Picture

It’s only been a few days since the members of the Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society released the nominees for their annual awards, and the winners have already been determined. However, don’t expect this to be an indication of how any of the major awards are going to go down later this season. Our editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta is counted among this group, and the wide array of film critics from various backgrounds makes the results skew much further from the norm than you might expect a...

Report: All-American Davis Riley to skip spring season at Alabama to turn pro

Davis Riley, a two-time All-American and two-time U.S. Junior Amateur runner-up, is skipping his senior spring season at Alabama to turn pro. The Golf Channel was the first to report on Riley's decision. The 21-year-old guided the Crimson Tide to the NCAA national championship last season, where the team came up short to Oklahoma State in Stillwater.

This Week in Photography Books: Christina Riley

Blame Canada. That just popped into my head, just this second. I was shaking off a first draft that I didn’t particularly like, (all the me, me, me,) and it hit me. Blame Canada. Such a funny musical number, in an audacious movie, which presents Saddam Hussein as Satan’s torturous gay lover. I haven’t watched “South Park” in years, truth be told, but I did drive through Trey and Matt’s hometown in Colorado this autumn. It’s a shockingly beautiful and definitely strange place, and is cut off fr...

Armie Hammer on the Art of Snorting (Fake) Cocaine on Camera

Armie Hammer learned a very specific skill while filming “Sorry to Bother You.” He plays a corrupt CEO in Boots Riley’s absurdist dark comedy, a role that required him to snort a long line of cocaine. Of course, the on-screen substance wasn’t real, but a little movie-making magic meant he didn’t actually have to inhale […]

Are these the most influential films of 2018?

The summer blockbusters, superhero franchises and sci-fi sequels might rule the box office this and every year, but cash at the box office does not prestige or history make. That’s the thesis at least of MoMa Contenders 2018, an annual curation of the most influential films, though the film curators at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City aren’t averse to honoring a big-budget box-office smash if its significance can be measured in more than the millions it earned. The Hammer Museum in Los ...

UCLA men’s basketball faces ‘big test’ in unbeaten LMU

Steve Alford didn’t spend much time relishing in UCLA’s 19-point win over Hawaii on Wednesday. The head coach briefly exhaled then shifted his focus forward. “We passed the first test,” Alford said Wednesday. “Now we’ve got a big test on Sunday.” The Bruins (5-2) host LMU at 7 p.m. Sunday, the second piece in a four-game homestand that Alford called a “key stretch” of the season. LMU, on the way to its 8-0 start, handed Georgetown its only loss of the season so far, and knocked off Cal State Nor...

UCLA’s Cody Riley clear for return with No. 11 Michigan State looming

LOS ANGELES — Redshirt freshman Cody Riley was cleared to play in UCLA’s game against Presbyterian on Monday less than three weeks after the forward suffered a jaw injury in practice. The injury, sustained on an inadvertent elbow from freshman center Moses Brown during practice on Oct. 31, was supposed to keep Riley out for at least three weeks. But he was among one of the first players out on the court to warm up Monday evening at Pauley Pavilion as he prepared for his official UCLA debut. Rile...

What UCLA’s Jalen Hill learned since being suspended for shoplifting in China

LOS ANGELES — Exactly one year ago, Jalen Hill was stepping off a plane at LAX and being shepherded through a crowd of paparazzi. Cameras flashed and people shouted questions at him and two teammates. “Where are the sunglasses?” “Did you learn a lesson?” One year to the day after returning from China in the aftermath of a shoplifting scandal that left him suspended for an entire season, Hill faced cameras again. He flashed a hesitant smile. “What’s it like to be back?” the 6-foot-10 forward was ...
