The Band Everyone Thought Was The Beatles: Revisit the Klaatu Conspiracy of 1976

In 1976, hundreds of diehard Beatles fans became convinced that the mysterious album 3:47 EST by the band Klaatu was actually a new release from The Beatles in disguise, after a DJ in Providence, Rhode Island played one of its songs on the radio. Shortly afterward, Steve Smith discovered the album at the newspaper he worked for, Rhode Island’s The Providence Journal, listened to it, and became immediately intrigued. The album contained no photographs, no identifying information at all, a...

The Case for Why Ringo Starr Is One of Rock’s Greatest Drummers

As far as I’m concerned, debate over whether or not Ringo Starr is a good drummer is over, done with, settled. How is it possible that some of the greatest recorded music of the 20th century, with some of the most distinctive rhythms, fills, and drum breaks in pop music, could have come from a mediocre musician? The standard response has been to allege that Starr’s best parts were played by someone else. In a handful of recordings—though I won’t argue over which ones—it seems he might ha...

What makes Ringo a great drummer?

A German drummer named Sina has a popular YouTube channel about drumming. In this video she demonstrates why Ringo Starr was a great drummer. Interestingly, because Sina couldn't use The Beatles original recordings for copyright reasons (YouTube's Content ID algorithm doesn't care about fair use) she used recordings from a Beatles' tribute band her father was in, "The Silver Beatles." (Fun fact: The Beatles were once called "The Silver Beatles.") Image: sina-drums/YouTube

Peter Jackson to Direct The Beatles Documentary Focusing on the Recording of ‘Let It Be’

Today marks the 50th anniversary of The Beatles‘ final live performance together on the roof of the band’s headquarters at Apple Corps at 3 Savile Row in London. So it’s only appropriate that today also brings news that The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson is working on a new documentary about The Beatles. There have been plenty of documentaries about the British rock sensation known as The Fab Four, with Ron Howard most recently tackling the historic band in a documentary called Eight ...

NAMM 2019: Peter Frampton honored at the 34th annual TEC Awards on Saturday

The trophy had barely been handed to Peter Frampton when the guitarist and singer announced at National Association of Music Merchants Show in Anaheim on Saturday night that instead of talking about his acclaimed career he wanted to talk about Les Paul, the man for whom this lifetime achievement award is named. “For a guitarist, for any serious musician, really, any association with Les Paul is a privilege and an honor,” Frampton told the audience of music industry professionals gathered for the...

A Virtual Tour of Every Place Referenced in The Beatles’ Lyrics: In 12 Minutes, Travel 25,000 Miles Across England, France, Russia, India & the US

Ach, the wonders and the blunders of the Internet. The wonder: Vanity Fair--lovely magazine, a bit too many stories about the royals and billionaires though--has the budget and the wherewithal to commission this video. It’s a 12 minute ride around the world using Google Maps, touching down to show locations mentioned in the Beatles lyrics, from Liverpool to the Black Mountain Hills of Dakota to Moscow, where the balalaikas are always ringing out. The blunder: it’s laced with inaccuracies...

50 moments from 1969 that shaped entertainment and pop culture

It was the last year of the ’60s, and the last year for Boris Karloff, Judy Garland and the Beatles, too. But it was also the first year for Led Zeppelin, Jennifer Aniston, “Easy Rider” and Jay-Z, too. John Lennon and Yoko Ono spent part of it in bed in public. The Doors’ Jim Morrison spent part of it in jail. Moviegoers spent time watching “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” while at home they watched a brand-new show called “The Brady Bunch” about a brand-new kind of blended family, the youn...

Holiday Mirth at 2018's Penultimate 'Live From Here'

The host of American Public Media's Live From Here show, Chris Thile, possesses an earnestness that is genuinely enough to draw in listeners. But at the third of four recent broadcasts from the Town Hall in New York, the inclusion of performers Jon Batiste and St. Vincent drew me to attend the broadcast in person. Thile had joined Batiste for a song or two during the finale of this year's Newport Folk Festival, and the two are genuinely happy sharing a stage...

How AXS TV Is Making Music Television for the ‘Salt And Pepper Demo’

Stars aren’t the only Hollywood workers campaigning this midterm

With Tuesday’s midterm elections considered by many to be the most important in a long while, politically minded Hollywood celebrities have inevitably brought their high profiles into various races. However, rank-and-file workers in the movie, TV, music and other entertainment fields – or, at least, the unions that represent them – are exceptionally politically active in this off-year election, too. “We’re focused on areas that we can turn from red to blue, and be labor-friendly,” Ed Brown, busi...

Why Ringo Starr Won’t Stop Touring

Nana na naaa! How Hey Jude became our favourite Beatles song

It’s 50 years since Paul McCartney came up with Hey Jude while driving from London to Surrey – and made a song that’s sung everywhere from football terraces to Oxford colleges. Here’s the story of how it came to beYou could argue forever about which of the Beatles’ songs is the greatest. According to the Daily Telegraph, it’s something nostalgic: In My Life. According to the NME, it’s something psychedelic: Strawberry Fields Forever, which wasn’t even the best song on the single it appeared on, ...

Consistency key for Sadio Mane to round out Liverpool's dynamite front three

After Liverpool made easy work of West Ham, the FC crew examine what makes the Reds capable of challenging Man City for the Premier League title. When Liverpool's much vaunted "Fab Four" were lighting it up in the opening months of last season, Sadio Mane was very much the George Harrison of the group. Philippe Coutinho and Mohamed Salah were John Lennon and Paul McCartney, the headliners, while Roberto Firmino was Ringo Starr -- not always fully appreciated by the mainstream audience but...

After 50 years, The Beatles’ ‘Yellow Submarine’ makes its graphic novel debut at Comic-Con 2018

Bill Morrison says he’s always been willing to accept work without really thinking too much about the gravity of what’s been offered, so when the illustrator and writer was offered a chance to do the first-ever graphic novel adaptation of “Yellow Submarine” he said yes without hesitation. “I don’t get intimidated,” said Morrison, the co-founder of Bongo Comics with “The Simpsons” creator Matt Groening, talking about the Beatles’ classic 1968 animated film at Comic-Con 2018 on Friday. “So at firs...
