Michigan continues campaign against EV-selling startups, but leaves Tesla alone

Using what can only be described as outdated and regressive legislation, auto dealers in Michigan, US, are attempting to block electric vehicle (EV) startups like Rivian and Lucid from selling directly to consumers in the state. Except, it’s fine with Tesla doing just that. Last week, a bill was introduced in the state, that would prevent direct-to-consumer car brands selling in Michigan without a dealer as an intermediary, Bloomberg reports. It would also prevent the startup carmakers from owni...

New Tesla challengers are scoring huge investments, but Nikola, Rivian, and Lucid may arrive too late to gain ground in the electric car market

Tesla got to where it is the hard way, with a modest 2010 IPO that raised around $260 million, followed by a decade of slogging through what CEO Elon Musk has often called "production hell." Maurizio Pesce A batch of electric-vehicle startups — such as Lucid, Rivian, and Fisker — has launched exciting new vehicles and attracted billions in investment. The traditional auto industry is also shifting to EVs and taking stakes in startups: GM acquired an 11% share in Nikola last week. Everyone ...

Insider Transportation: EV startups take a new road to public markets, airlines ditch change fees, and more

Canoo is just one of a flock of EV startups skipping the traditional IPO in favor of a reverse merger. Canoo Even amid plagues, summer is the time for road trips. (Maybe especially amid plagues, when travel restrictions make a terrestrial trip more workable than flying.) But as we head into Labor Day and take a look back at the season, we've noticed a distinct lack of road shows. You know, those continent-hopping bonanzas that serve as the prelude to a company's bell-ringing IPO. Small EV showdown: It's the Chevy Bolt against the Nissan Leaf Plus and the MINI Cooper Electric (GM)

I've checked out the Nissan Leaf Plus, the Chevy Bolt EV, and the MINI Cooper SE Electric — a trio of compact/sub-compact, all-electric hatchbacks. The Bolt and the Leaf Plus have comparable range, while the MINI manages just over 100 miles on a charge. The Nissan Leaf has been an EV sales leader since 2010, while the Chevy Bolt was the first long-range, mass-market electric car, launched in 2016. The MINI is the newest of this group — and it wins the comparison because it's far and away the m...

Rivian fires back at Tesla in lawsuit, accuses automaker of attempting to ‘malign its reputation’

Rivian has asked a judge to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Tesla, arguing that two of the three claims in the case fails to state sufficient allegations of trade secret theft and poaching talent and instead was an attempt to malign its reputation and hurt its own recruiting efforts. Winning the electric car race is just the beginning of Elon Musk's plan for Tesla (TSLA)

The electric car race has been on since 2010, but it's now essentially over, and Tesla has won: CEO Elon Musk's automaker dominates the EV market But that market remains tiny, at just about 2% of global sales. Musk knows that for Tesla's grand vision to succeed, that share has to grow exponentially. Winning the EV race means that for Tesla, the real work of eliminating the internal-combustion engine has just begun. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. The idea that automakers a...
