Mexico’s prized beaches threatened by smelly algae invasion

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Tourists looking for sun and sand in Mexican resorts like Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum have been disgusted by foul-smelling mounds of sargassum — a seaweed-like algae — piling up on beaches and turning turquoise waters brown, and experts are warning that it may be the new normal. Mexico’s Riviera […]

John Woo Sells Pacific Palisades Split Level Home

Legendary Hong Kong-based filmmaker John Woo has sold his pied-a-terre in the ritzy Riviera neighborhood of Los Angeles’ Pacific Palisades for a wee bit more than $5.4 million — though it took about a year and he accepted more than 25% below the overly optimistic original asking price. The action-genre auteur, who helmed the 2000 […]

Masters Notes: Mike Weir pops up, Bernhard Langer rolls on, UCLA’s Devon Bling hangs in

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The most unexpected score on Masters Thursday came from Mike Weir, the 48-year-old champion from 2003. Weir hit 13 of 18 greens in regulation and put together a solid, even-par 72. You might have wondered what happened to Weir, the left-hander who was a back-to-back winner at the PGA Tour event at Riviera and had eight Tour wins overall. He played on the Tour only once last year and six times the previous year. Today he’s on the Web.com Tour, with the college kids and the hope mer...

WESTLAKE VILLAGE — George Gankas is wearing a “Born To Bogey” cap. He is standing beside his lunchtime booth at Brett’s Deli, just down the street from his teaching station at Westlake Golf Course. He is showing how to swing faster if you can rotate your body correctly and fully. Yoga is not required. Sitting there is Ken Katz, who represents, among others, Saquon Barkley of the New York Giants. “I used to hit it 310 (yards) at Riviera,” Katz said. “Then I was down to 250. I went back to George ...

Whicker: Paul Goydos, the sequel, is finding golfing gold after 50

NEWPORT BEACH — The PGA Tour Champions was born because Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino got old. It is known today as the place where Bernhard Langer never does. In truth, it has become one of the few made-for-TV ideas that hit the wall and stuck. By whatever name, the 50-and-over seniors have been rolling for dollars since 1980, a profitable second act for Langer, Fred Couples, Tom Lehman, Miguel Angel Jimenez and their peers, a timely mulligan for others. Paul Goydos, 54, is playi...

Transportation in India: What the Tuk-tuk?!

Transportation in India – What the Tuk Tuk?! We originally published this post back in 2010, after our first trip to India. We spent 5 weeks backpacking across Northern India. I actually wrote most of this post on a moleskine notepad while traveling on an overnight train from Udaipur to Mumbai. Yes, an actual pen and paper! I was cleaning up some old posts and I stumbled on this one. I thought it would be fun to re-publish, as most of you likely have not read this one. If you’ve visited Ind...

WGC-Mexico Championship 2019 picks: Here's why Justin Thomas will bounce back to win, according to a PGA Tour caddie

Last week at Riviera offered a lesson in how difficult it is to predict winners on the PGA Tour. For 54 holes, Justin Thomas dominated the Genesis Open—to the point where sportsbooks made him a live -400 favorite (-400 meaning, you have to bet $400 to win $100) entering the final round. JT looked unstoppable: Even after a shank during his third round, Thomas got up and down for par.

Famous filming locations in Chicago

Chicago is a beautiful city with towering buildings, world-class architecture, and iconic bridges and elevated train lines. But it also has a gritty, industrial past that gives it a darker sort of beauty. Due to this landscape, it’s no surprise that the city has long been a favorite backdrop for filmmakers. Whether you’re a local or planning a trip, a great way to get a new perspective on the Second City is to view it through someone else’s lens. Here’s our list of the top 11 best films set i...

PGA Tour contemplating cut to top 65 and ties

The PGA Tour again is taking a close look at changing the size of its cuts, and this time the idea appears to have some legs. One topic at the first Player Advisory Council meeting last Tuesday at Riviera was to change the 36-hole cut from top 70 and ties to top 65 and ties, which is what the European Tour and the Web.com Tour do. ''There's some traction for it,'' said Jordan Spieth, in his first year on the policy board.

VIDEO: J.B. Holmes Wins Genesis Open in a Kentucky Waltz

J.B. HOLMES OUTLASTED FELLOW KENTUCKIAN Justin Thomas to win the Genesis Open at storied Riviera Country Club. But the final round took forever, thanks to an unapologetic Holmes.Brian Wacker reported at GolfDigest.com: The final threesome of Holmes, Thomas and Adam Scott played in 5 hours, 29 minutes. Most of the slow-rolling came at the hand of Holmes, long considered one of the biggest culprits in the game of playing at a glacial pace, as he plumb-bobbed and dawdled his way around Riviera. No...

Whicker: Riviera’s ill winds blow the winner’s check out of Thomas’ hands

PACIFIC PALISADES — A golf ball weighs 1.62 ounces. It can still buckle a golfer’s knees. They were writing Justin Thomas’ name on the big check Sunday morning at the Genesis Open. He was at 18-under-par and leading by five shots. Riviera’s soggy grounds and the endless days and the bone-piercing chill of the evening had not touched him all week. Then Thomas watched a birdie putt on 17 give a head-fake toward the cup at Riviera and then turn away. Thomas pointed agonizingly to his right, and the...

LOS ANGELES (AP) — J.B. Holmes rallied from a four-shot deficit in the final round and won a marathon finish Sunday in the Genesis Open for his first victory in three years and a trip back to the Masters. Holmes closed with a 1-under 70, and that was enough to overcome Justin Thomas, who took […]

Everything you missed from Tiger Woods' electrifying third-round 65 at Riviera

After a 30-hole marathon Friday at Riviera, it looked like Tiger Woods might play just six holes on Saturday morning after carding a third straight bogey at the par-3 fourth—putting him in danger of his first missed cut of 2019. The cut at the Genesis Open winded up being even par, but Woods felt a lot safer when he holed a 23-footer for birdie at the par-4 ninth to post a second-round 71, putting him at one under for the tournament. With fans at Riviera still out in full force late Saturday eve...

Justin Thomas leads wide-open Genesis Open at halfway point

PACIFIC PALISADES — Justin Thomas saw the sun rise and set at Riviera Country Club on Saturday during a long day of golf at the Genesis Open. But as he walked back toward the clubhouse in darkness just before 6 p.m., Thomas found himself in sole possession of the lead heading into what will be another full day of play Sunday. Thomas finished his second round just before 9 a.m. Saturday after posting a two-round total of 11-under 131, leaving him tied for the lead with Adam Scott. It wasn’t until...

Thomas seizes Riviera lead as Woods surges

Justin Thomas eagled the first hole of the third round Saturday to open a one-shot lead over Adam Scott at the rain-hit Genesis Open, where Tiger Woods was surging as darkness halted play. Thomas and Australia's Scott shared the 36-hole lead on 11-under par after both completed six-under par 65s in the rain-delayed second round. Thomas, who had 14 birdies in the 30 holes he played on Friday, kept the momentum going over six second-round holes on Saturday morning with a birdie at the fifth a...
