All IPOs should be paid for in Robux

Hello and welcome back to Equity, TechCrunch’s venture capital-focused podcast (now on Twitter!), where we unpack the numbers behind the headlines. This is an all-time first for the show, it’s an Equity Leftovers. Which means that we’re not focusing on a single topic like we would in an Equity Shot. This is just, well, more Equity. What is Roblox worth?

With Roblox joining the end-of-year unicorn stampede towards the public markets, we’re set for a contentedly busy second half of November and early December. I hope you didn’t have vacation planned in the next few weeks. This morning we need to get deeper into the Roblox S-1 so that we can better understand the nature of its revenue generation. Why? Roblox files to go public

Roblox, the child-friendly gaming company, filed to go public today. Its listing comes one day after the lending company Affirm initiated its own public offering and a mere two days after Airbnb’s filing. Roblox filed confidentially to go public in mid-October, but its numbers were unreleased until today when it published its S-1 document. The company is not the first gaming platform company to go public this year, with gaming engine Unity debuting earlier this year. After its IPO, Unity ...

This video game is turning teenagers into millionaires — and it's on track to pay out $70 million more this year

Roblox, the video game app that's mega-popular with younger players, is on track to pay out $70 million to its developers this year. That's up from $30 million last year. There are 4 million developers building 400 million Roblox games. They're all free to play, with the premium Robux currency as a way for developers to monetize — which has made for some young millionaires.  Now, the company is looking for ways to increase opportunity for developers, says CEO David Baszucki. To that end,  Robl...

A video game you've never heard of will pay out $30 million to players this year — and it's part of a much bigger master plan

"This is real work for us," said David  Baszucki, the CEO of video game platform Roblox, on stage at the Roblox Developers Conference this past Saturday.  Baszucki had just finished telling a crowd of 185-plus developers that Roblox was on track to pay out $30 million to the developers making games on the platform — a crowd that generally ranged from 17 up to 22 years old, plus a few parental chaperones. If you're older than, say, 15, there's a healthy chance you've never heard of Roblox, de...

A video game you've never heard of has turned three teens into multimillionaires — and it's just getting started

This past February, Alex Jafanz spent much of his 18th birthday on an important phone call discussing the future of his video game business.  About three weeks earlier, Jafanz and his business partner had published a cops-and-robbers video game called "Jailbreak" on Roblox. Although Jafanz and his partner had created Roblox games before, "Jailbreak" was their first overnight success, hitting about 65,000 simultaneous players on the day it launched and maintaining that level afterward. "Jailbreak...

A video game that has turned players into $50,000-a-month entrepreneurs just raised $92 million to turn them into media moguls

Though it has been around for over a decade, the video game Roblox — for smartphones, PCs, and game consoles — might still be flying under your radar. This is especially true if you're, say, older than 13. On Tuesday, Roblox, already profitable, announced a $92 million round of venture-capital funding led by Snapchat investor Meritech Capital Partners and Index Ventures. And the company has big plans to extend that "free market" into wild areas beyond games. Roblox is already a massive hit, wit...
