Plugging Into the Third Mind

The Third Mind closes with a tribute to Roky Erickson and the 13th Story Elevators' dark classic "Reverberation". This cover feels like the most straightforward track on the album, coming across like a particularly sprightly (and Edgy) U2 tune with a dash of hair metal thrown in the mix. On paper that might sound horrific but scraping away a bit of the original's psychedelia reveals "Reverberation" to be a terrific rock tune, and there's nothing wrong with that. That's the cool thing about The...

4 things to know about Ghost, the Swedish hard rockers who raised an unholy ruckus at the Forum

A church owned the Forum in Inglewood for a dozen years before its resurrection as a music venue in 2014, and on Friday it seemed like one again as the Swedish rock band Ghost took it over to deliver an entirely different kind of service. Ghost is a heavy rock band from Scandinavia and you don’t have to be the Church Lady to know it definitely could be Satan that singer Tobias Forge, or Cardinal Copia, as his current stage persona is known, is talking about in songs with titles such as “Rituals,...

Watch David Gilmour Play the Songs of Syd Barrett, with the Help of David Bowie & Richard Wright

Though he eventually disappeared from the public eye, Syd Barrett did not fade into obscurity all at once after his "erratic behavior," as Andy Kahn writes at JamBase, "led to his leaving" Pink Floyd in 1968. The founding singer/songwriter/guitarist went on in the following few years to write, record, and even sporadically perform new solo material, appearing on John Peel’s BBC show in 1970 and giving a long Rolling Stone interview the following year. He even started, briefly, a new band...

Roky Erickson :: All That May Do My Rhyme/Where The Pyramid Meets The Eye

In the 1990s, Roky Erickson was rediscovered. Psychedelia’s forgotten man, a cult hero for decades, got a new lease on his creative life. In the mid-1960s, his legendary 13th Floor Elevators roared out of Austin, establishing the template for rock psychedelia. Their garage punk squall was so propulsive, so “out there,” it spooked even the […]
