Couldn’t He Just Tell-All? Todd Rundgren Reveals Enough in Candid, Funny New Memoir

Todd Rundgren has spoken up about his feelings on not having made the transition this year from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominee to actual inductee. “I’m heartbroken,” he says. “For LL Cool J. Radiohead, Janet Jackson, Stevie Nicks, Def Leppard, The Cure, Roxy Music and the Zombies...

... are the new inductees to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It's just annual nonsense, but I've got to say I love The Zombies. I've loved them since their first single played on the radio long ago, and we saw them here in Madison in 2017. Here are my "Notes from the Zombies concert at the Barrymore."Why weren't they already in?! From the first link above (Rolling Stone):For Colin Blunstone of the Zombies – who have been eligible since 1989 and have appeared on three previous ballots – this was the...

In Two Small Steps For Womankind, The Rock Hall Inducts Janet Jackson & Stevie Nicks

Thursday morning, I woke up to a miracle: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which has had an embarrassing dearth of female honorees in recent years, has managed to induct not one but two highly deserving women in its 2019 class. That’s right, y’all, Stevie Nicks and Janet Jackson are in!This was Jackson’s third nomination (she became eligible in 2007), and the first nomination for Nicks as a solo artist (she became eligible in 2006). Jackson has faced an unfair uphill climb in music since her...

My Favorite New Travel Destinations of 2018

Every year, I name my favorite new travel destinations. Lots of traditions have come and gone on the site, but I’ve been doing this for six years in a row! 2018 was much more low-key than past years: most of my trips were around 3-5 days or so. That said, I managed to visit seven countries (Japan, Argentina, Netherlands, Lebanon, Cyprus, Austria, and Kenya) in addition to exploring the US. I enjoyed only doing four “big trips” this year: Japan in February (12 days), Antarctica in March (16 days...

How to vote for Rock Hall of Fame

Midterms, schmidterms. Election season is over, for about five minutes. Thanksgiving weekend has been grand. The fires are out, for now. Christmas and New Year’s festivities can, and should, wait. The only polling I’m concerned about in this fabulous lull between holidays, between that toasty Indian Summer that is November around here and any real rains that may be coming our droughty way, is the annual balloting for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Don’t try to tell me that culture is not politi...

25 ho ho holiday concerts coming to Southern California this season

There are a lot of places to go and get your musical jollies this holiday season as numerous themed performances are happening  throughout Southern California in December. It’s that time of year when our favorite venues transform into winter wonderlands and big-name and legendary artists come to town to spread holiday cheer by cranking out renditions of songs we all know and to share the occasional original holiday contribution as well. Sometimes Santa Claus visits during these sets, there is fa...

Soul Serenade: Gene Chandler, “Groovy Situation”

How many artists can you think of whose careers spanned the years from doo-wop to classic soul and into the disco era and had hits in all of them? The one that leaps to mind for me is Gene Chandler. There were landmarks along the way for Chandler, from his 1962 doo-wop smash “Duke of Earl,” to his 1964 soul classic “Just Be True,” to his 1978 disco hit “Get Down.” Chandler is a Chicago guy, born and raised. He was a teenager when he joined his first band, the Gaytones. In 1957 he became a member...

Winter activities in cold US cities

There’s an old expression people who live in freezing cold cities like to use. “There’s no such thing as bad weather,” they say. “Only bad clothes.” Perhaps this is just something they tell themselves to stay warm while waiting for a bus in an Arctic wind. But if it holds true and cold places can still be fun with the right amount of layering, then lower hotel prices and smaller crowds make winter the perfect time to visit. Provided you invest in a good jacket first. From train rides through ...

Shuffle: Bringing Home Movies to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s first “Home Movie Day” is coming this weekend. It's an opportunity for the Rock Hall to show off the materials they’ve gotten in an ambitious project to document Northeast Ohio’s music scene. Ron Bierut grew up loving concerts and photography. He owned a Super 8 film camera which could capture vivid images, but no sound. Still, the Strongsville native would bring the camera with him to shows to film what he was seeing and enjoying at the time. But it wasn’t alway...
