Guest Post: Judy Wilcox aka HeyJude

I am Judy Wilcox I am a procrastinator.     When this pandemic hit, I decided as long as I was going to be isolating at home, I might as well dig into the numerous projects I’d been putting off for years.   I made a list—clean closets, drawers, cabinets, and the storage area which hasn’t been tackled for, well, let’s just say a very long time.   I cleaned the hall closet and a few drawers and lost interest.     I have other confessions to make as well.   I make Santas using old quilts, v...

Buzzfeed, Amazon & DoorDash: The One Where the Businesses Around the Globe Started to Pivot, Pivot, and Pivot some more | By Alan Young

In a Friends episode titled, "The One with the Cop", Ross, Chandler and Rachel struggle to maneuver a couch up the narrow staircase of their apartment building. As the group attempts to turn a corner, Ross repeatedly yells "Pivot!" in an increasingly hysterical tone, setting the stage for a hilarious, now-iconic scene that is frequently referenced across social media. Who knew that, nine months into 2020, we would all feel as though Ross was screaming that very sentiment at the collective...

Another Court Rules Against Trump’s Anti-Immigrant Census Apportionment Policy

A second panel of federal judges has ruled against the President Trump census policy that would seek to exclude undocumented immigrants from the count that determines congressional apportionment. The latest decision, handed down Thursday in a case brought in California, goes further than the previous ruling — which stemmed from a New York-based lawsuit — in that the new decision declares the policy both illegal and a violation of the Constitution. The Supreme Court will have the final word on...

Supreme Court Upholds Ban On Curbside Voting In Alabama

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Wednesday put on hold a lower court order that would have permitted curbside voting in Alabama in November. The justices’ vote was 5-3, with the court’s three liberals dissenting. As is typical when the Supreme Court acts on an emergency basis, the justices in the majority did not explain their decision. It was not clear how many counties might have offered curbside voting, allowing people to vote from their car by handing their ballot to a poll worker. ...

Here’s a shortlist of potential winners. Some of the items have worked on my clients, and some I’ve seen in person. A shout-out to the Sanctuary brand, which has become more size inclusive. My hope is that more brands will follow suit. Browse the colour options, and read the reviews to get another perspective. Wagner – Too Big To Cancel?

It is his instability—which enlists the audience in active and ongoing negotiation and interpretation, changing as we grapple with him at different historical moments—that makes him relevant. The music may be astonishing, the ideas volatile. Which will have the longer and more consequential afterlife? Perhaps more compelling than either, Ross suggests, is the irreconcilability of the problem. – Slate

Weddings on the Run: Is It Possible to Elope in a COVID-19 World?

Image: By the Wilde via Bitsy & Toby’s Romantic Hobart Mountaintop Elopement When I think of eloping, I picture couples zipping off overseas to get married in exotic locations to take the pressure out of planning their wedding. If I’m being really honest, I also picture Chandler and Monica in Friends when they nearly elope in Las Vegas only to be pipped at the post by an intoxicated Ross and Rachel. EXCLUSIVE: Ross Commits To Protocols That Make It Harder For Trump To Mess With Census

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said in a statement to TPM that when the Census Bureau gives the President the 2020 census data for congressional apportionment, it will make that data public at the same time. The statement commits the Trump administration to following a decades-long tradition of simultaneously releasing and transmitting the numbers, encouraging public confidence that the data will not be secretly manipulated by the White House. For months, former Census officials and other cen...

Ross Vaguely Promises To Make Census Data Public When He Sends It To White House

The Census Bureau says it is “working hard” to deliver the “complete and accurate state population counts” that will be used for congressional apportionment by Dec. 31, the statutory deadline for the bureau to deliver those numbers to the President. The statement, which suggested that the bureau is not yet 100 percent sure it can meet that statutory deadline, came after TPM asked the bureau and the Commerce Department several detailed questions about its release plans for the 2020 data. TPM s...

Appeals Court Won’t Let AL Election Chief Impose De Facto Curbside Voting Ban

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit refused to reinstate a de facto ban on curbside voting that Alabama’s Secretary of State John Merrill (R) has tried to impose in the state. The appeals court did, however, revive restrictions on absentee voting that had been loosened for the pandemic by a federal judge. Through Alabama is letting voters cite COVID-19 as an excuse to vote absentee, state officials have aggressively fought other efforts to make voting safe and accessible during the...

Judge Extends Census Counting, Rails Against Admin For Violating Her Previous Order

In a scathing order overnight, U.S. Federal Judge Lucy Koh ordered that the counting operations for the decennial census continue through Oct. 31. She said that the administration, by trying to end those operations sooner than that, had violated her previous orders extending the count. “Defendants’ dissemination of erroneous information; lurching from one hasty, unexplained plan to the next; and unlawful sacrifices of completeness and accuracy of the 2020 Census are upending the status quo, v...

It’s Crunch Time For Trump’s Anti-Immigrant Gambit On The Census

The good news for President Trump is that as long as the Census Bureau cuts off counting by next week, it will have enough time to deliver to him the data he’ll need for his anti-immigrant census power grab, regardless of whether he wins in November. The bad news for the President is the administration’s plans to cut off census counting next week is wrapped up in a very ugly and complicated legal battle. Developments in the court cases challenging the Trump administration’s census maneuvering...

Ross asked if ending census earlier would produce numbers in Trump's current term

Before ordering on Monday that the 2020 census conclude more than three weeks ahead of schedule, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross asked Census Bureau officials if the earlier date would effectively allow them to produce a final set of numbers during President Donald Trump's current term in office.

Judge Suggests Ross Violated Her Order Extending Time To Finish Census Counting

A federal judge on Tuesday suggested that Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross may have violated her order blocking the administration from rushing the 2020 census count. The judge has ordered briefing on the matter. Among U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh’s concerns was Ross’ announcement on Monday of a new “target date” for the census to complete its field counting operations by next week – an announcement which was apparently based on the very schedule she had previously blocked. At one point at a he...

Ross Sets ‘Target Date’ For Ending Census That Seems To Flout Judge’s Order

The Census Bureau said Monday that Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross had set Oct. 5 as a “target date” for finishing data collection for 2020’s count — an announcement that seems to fly in the face of a federal judge’s order that those operations continue through the end of October. The Census Bureau’s press shop could not provide TPM with any more information beyond a link to a statement matching the initial tweet with the announcement. House Oversight Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney meanwhile bashe...
