The origins of dance styles

There is an amazing variety of types, styles, and genres of dancing – from street to disco, to folk dancing and ballroom. Some are recent inventions, stemming from social and political changes, whilst others have origins as old as civilisation itself. Archaeological evidence for early dancing has been found in 9000 year old Indian cave paintings, as well as Egyptian tombs with dancing figures decorating the walls, dated to around 3300 BC. Society’s love of dance has never waned, and it is just a...

Why Zumba Is Insanely Good Exercise

Zumba was born in Colombia in the 1990s, quite by accident. A fitness instructor forgot to bring his usual workout music to class, so he grabbed some Latin albums from his car, ditched the constraints of a traditional workout and danced just like he would at a club. His class followed along, sweating to the…

Papa Wemba: strong, but ambiguous bonds, with his motherland

Eugenio Giorgianni, Royal Holloway "The Kasaï Nightingale" was on stage, a flamboyantly dressed stage animal as always, when he collapsed from a sudden illness. The drummer completed his Rumba riff on the cymbal before stopping the music. The dancers rushed to the leader's aid. The images of the last moments of Papa Wemba, who died on Saturday 24 April 2016 at the Urban Musical Festival Anoumabo in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, consecrate the end of a superstar. He was one of the outstanding artists ...

Little love for Lumber River; to to hold Duke accountable

It is a shame the Love for the River meeting on Thursday at RCC was so poorly attended compared with the Rumba on the Lumba just a week ago. A few ten's vs one to two thousand people in attendance is a poor indication of the true love for the Lumber River.
